Or maybe they just never really loved the game, and they are doing what they need to do to get a big pay cheque.  I don't judge them for that - not everyone loves their job, even those who make a lot of wedge doing it.

By all accounts he was up to that shite when he was in Newcastle's reserves. With full application, full fitness and top-class coaching he could have been at least as good as Giroud imo. But think about the percentage of games he played for us where he looked truly fit, sprinting without looking laboured, battling without fouling, passing without looking awkward. It must have been about 20% of his games, mainly due to injuries, but he seemed to pack on a few pounds whenever he was out for even a week. At his best though, full intensity, full fitness, team catered to him, he's a bit of a force of nature. Not sure we'll ever see it consistently though

To be fair to him, he has stayed out of the headlines since he quit Newcastle ... and didn't cause us any problems off the field, like everyone feared.

It's true though. Not from accidental injuries like falling of a stool, etc but actual sports related injuries, injuries to muscles, muscle weakness, strains, softer joints from your body metabolizing the alcohol, etc these then have an ongoing effect that can cause bigger injuries.
