Esso Petrol Station by Anfield (Oakfield Rd) Barbers gone too!
« on: January 24, 2021, 08:05:28 pm »
Anybody know why it's been bulldozed and what's taking its place?

It always seemed to do good business, plus it was handy for me living so close to it! It's not that big a piece of land to develop, I wonder if the club have anything to do with it?

I know on match days it was used as a car park, I just can't see in the limited space, what they can now build on this vacant land.

Sandon.  Although the whole block has not been demolished, just the petrol station footprint.

The barbers/scarf shop, are still standing.

That's not good news for the local independent traders if true, not much space to park though (if any) if it is.

Don't they normally put artist's impressions up etc to let the public know what's going on?

It's not the church that had the sign up in the 60s 'St John shoots but Jesus saves'?

Really, I never remember a Church on that site. Must have passed it hundreds of times legging to and from the ground as a youth, then again such was the excitement as a kid back then you wouldn't take in much of the surrounding area!

I thought it was 'Jesus Saves' followed by graffiti stating 'but St John scores from the rebound'.

Spoke to my Dad and he doesn’t remember it being a church either. He grew up literally right over the road from there from 56 until prob the late 70s.

However my Mum who also grew up around there at the same time did remember it and found this pic, is this it?...

That’s the one Craig , the disco I mentioned was probably around 73 so would have been there for a good few years after that . Anyone familiar with walking around Anfield and see the nursing home a block away from the Arkles on Anfield road that also was a church as well as one alongside Anfield road junior school further along , only All saints left standing these days .

Yeah my mum remembers it well she said. Not sure why my Dad didn’t as he delivered papers all around there from the mid-60’s and tends to have a pretty good memory of the area.

Yeah according to my Mum it was a Methodist church. When it closed they moved to the one at the bottom of Heyes St (my Mum used to take my sister to a baby play thing on Friday afternoons at that one apparently, would have been in 79 I guess).

Edit - she remembers it like that. Said 76 was prob about right.

Wow..The times I've passed that Church, without taking note of it is mad! Mind you, I could tell you it wasn't always a Petrol Station there either, it just never crossed my mind what was there in the past!

Looks like The Barbers Shop is coming down too, noticed a huge hole in the roof on the corner of the actual block this morning.

Sounds right, just asked a local resident. That's a Morrisons that sells Petrol he told me.

Wonder if they keep The Esso staff, nice, polite lot them!

Just came on to post this exact thing, I was up by there as car was in the garage by the Flat Iron and had a little walk around and saw a gaping hole above the "klopp's bar" roof where the mural is painted

More bothered about the ‘Sandon Wall’ than the actual garage.

Not a Morrisons after all, another Esso Petrol station, unless it's a joint effort with a small Morrisons shop. That Klopp Guest House deffo has a leaky roof!

Just an update on this, the Barbers on the block behind the Petrol Staion has gone too. It's been relocated  to Prory Rd, next to the Liver Laundetette (no 39 I think)

The Petrol Station itself is open now, just an updated Esso! You pay in a temporary cabin for now, while they work on the shop part.

But is the surrounding wall still in place so you can still sit down and have a few cans before the match?

Cheeky bastards built it higher ...I realise why now! The shop on the site will be a Morrisons, probably their idea!

My old paper round was from next door to the laundrette , Trevor Jones’s newsagents 7 mornings a week , six evenings of echos and an extra one for the pinks after 6 all for about £2.50 a week

Wow...heavy round that, especially with weight of some of the Sunday papers years ago! Our shop never delivered The Pink, we just waited in the shop for the driver to chuck a bundle in!

The shop would be full and The pink would sell out if both teams did well, if not there wasn't as much demand.

Great paper, always remember it would say what teams where on MOTD that night and on the following days footy programme.

Bizarrely, if one of the local games was running late, such was the rushed nature of getting the paper out, the paper would end their report without knowing the final score!
