Brexit. the Con continues
« on: August 5, 2020, 01:22:01 pm »
IDS taking a hammering for his comments on the WA, he voted for it in Parliament.
The Torys argued we don't need another referendum after the 2017 GE as the public told us what they want when they voted Tory and how they respect the British peoples opinion as it is Sovereign. the British people also voted for Johnsons oven ready deal in the 2019 GE but it is now getting tossed in the bin. the Tories are about to ignore the so called Will of the People and refuse to implement the Brexit the people of this country voted for in 2019. so much for respecting democracy.

Video of IDS saying he will vote for the deal and we have already had over a 100 hrs pf debate so we know exactly what we are voting for.
https://twitter.com/MarinaNigrelli/status/1290932219196911616

Pinched.
Brexiteer Iain Duncan Smith has slammed the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement on Twitter despite voting for it in the Commons last year.

The agreement, supported by the Tories, laid out the terms of Britain’s divorce from the EU, which officially occurred on January 31.

But Smith, a fervent Eurosceptic and ex-Tory leader, has now moaned about the agreement he helped push through parliament.

Iain Duncan Smith
Whilst the UK wants to have a good trade relationship with the EU as a sovereign state, the EU has different ideas. They want our money and they want to stop us being a competitor. The Withdrawal Agreement (WA) we signed last year sadly helps them. (1/3)
To avoid their own budget black hole, the EU gets £39billion as a “divorce payment” from us, reflecting our share of the current EU budget. But it gets worse. Buried in the fine print, unnoticed by many, is the fact we remain hooked into the EU’s loan book. (2/3)
You can't be half in the EU & half out, the problem is the WA. It costs too much & it denies us true national independence. This WA giving the EU future control over us has to go. Now Britain faces a £160billion #EU loans bill AFTER #Brexit (3/3)

https://twitter.com/MPIainDS/status/1290292766514135040

The MP voted for the deal and also attempted to stop the House of Commons having more time to discuss the agreement, shortly before Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson called an election to force it through.

“Whilst the UK wants to have a good trade relationship with the EU as a sovereign state, the EU has different ideas,” he ranted. “They want our money and they want to stop us being a competitor. The Withdrawal Agreement (WA) we signed last year sadly helps them.”

Britain was a participant in The European Investment Bank and the European Financial Stability Mechanism which issues loans to support investment projects across the bloc.

The UK’s share of liability is around 12% which experts say translates into £160 billion of unpaid loans, four times Britain’s £39 billion divorce deal.

People have shared their frustration on Twitter.

Chris Grey, a professor in Organization Studies at Royal Holloway university, wrote: “So in 2016, despite having no detail on what Brexit meant, people knew exactly what they were voting for. But in 2019, despite having a detailed Withdrawal Agreement, MPs didn’t know what they were voting for.”

“Maybe you should have read it before you voted for it?” Anthony Crutch pointed out.

@Mandoline_Blue said: “Agreements are binding. It pays to read them first. If you don’t know that, what on earth are you doing in government?”

Andrew Parnall argued this was “evidence” that leave voters could not have known what they voted for. “MPs like Mr Smith @MPIainDS certainly don’t,” he added.

so much for respecting democracy.

There's been nothing democratic about any of it - the background actors who have paid for Brexit to be pushed through always demanded 'no deal' as a final outcome (unless a deal could magically be arranged that gave them the same freedom), but knew that the public wouldn't be convinced to vote for that. Iinstead, they decided to float so many vague fairytale Brexits that enough of the great unwashed masses would be able to latch onto something that sounded positive and start nodding along. They only needed that one 'smash and grab' victory, no matter how slight or ill-gotten, to subsequently paint any attempt to derail the train rushing headlong to disaster as treachery etc.

£160bn. That's a number so big I can't even begin to work out how many lots of 350m it amounts to. We are going to need a lot of busses.
"All the lads have been talking about is walking out in front of the Kop, with 40,000 singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'," Collins told BBC Radio Solent. "All the money in the world couldn't buy that feeling," he added.

450 odd.

Just used a calculator: 8.8 years at 350m/week.

Late realisation that despite PM rhetoric last year, exiting EU will in fact require border controls in NI as per the withdrawal agreement government signed up to.

Telegraph calling for the EHIC cards to be retained post-Brexit.

This was obvious from day 1. They want the benefits, but without the responsibilities or paying into it. I'd imagine they wouldn't take kindly to a noisy former member of their social or sporting clubs demanding use of the pool or member's bar after jibbing membership

For anyone who's interested, I've copied it inside the spoiler:

Spoiler

British holidaymakers enjoy one EU perk above all others — we must protect it

Things have gone very quiet on the Brexit front – travellers and politicians have other things to worry about at the moment, perhaps. But last week I received an email from Carol, a reader whose husband suffers from a long-term illness and she is very preoccupied about Brexit indeed.

The illness sometimes requires medical treatment at short notice and she is anxious that they will no longer be able to afford to go on holiday abroad, because the costs of insuring him will be so high.

Her point was that currently they are able to travel in Europe without insurance cover for that specific condition. This is because they can rely on the reciprocal health – or EHIC – arrangement, which entitles UK citizens to medical care using the public health system in all EU countries, plus a few other non-EU members such as Switzerland and Norway.

It’s an excellent and sensible scheme, and it especially benefits older travellers and those who are at higher risk of needing urgent medical care. I have warned that we may lose it as a result of Brexit but have clung on to the hope that it will be included as part of the final trade deal.

The latest signals from Government are not encouraging, however. It is seeming more and more likely that we will end the transition period on Dec 31 without such a deal. A clue lies in a public briefing document published recently (gov.uk/visit-europe) that warns about the likely changes for travellers in several different areas.

These include new arrangements for pet travel (the pet passport scheme is ending and four months’ notice will be required under the new system) and stricter requirements for passport validity and for border control. Not only will we have to queue in the slow track when we arrive in an EU country, but we may have to show a return or onward ticket and prove that we have enough money for our stay.

The guarantee of free roaming for mobile phones is also ending. The only consolation the Government offers us on this is that we are protected from getting mobile data charges above £45 without our knowing. In other words, once you’ve spent £45 on data, your roaming will be blocked unless you agree to pay more.

But it is the threat to the EHIC card which, I think, will be the greatest loss to some holidaymakers. Insurers tell me that if the scheme does end, the additional costs for standard travel insurance policies will not be especially high. As Carol points out, however, for anyone with a pre-existing health condition and all those aged over 65, the consequences could be very significant.

For these people, travel insurance, if they can find it, can cost hundreds of pounds. And the option to buy a policy which excludes cover for a specific condition, in the knowledge that emergency treatment is available at no (or low) cost locally, will no longer be viable. Meanwhile, even the healthiest older travellers can expect increases in premiums at 65 and probably every five years after that.

Whatever your view of the EU, it is hard not to concede that it has brought many benefits to consumers. The rules which protect our rights to refunds for cancelled holidays and flights, and which also protect our money in the case of a tour operator going out of business all stem from EU directives. Anyone who has gained compensation for a delayed flight can also thank the EU.

These benefits are not currently under threat, thankfully, because they are enshrined in UK law.

For all the posturing and politics of the negotiations, surely it is in all our interests to rescue as many benefits as possible from our membership, including the EHIC card. Let’s not bite off our own nose to spite the EU’s political face.

Wasn't one of the reasons for leaving the EU to minimise red tape? Let's see how long theses pesky rights last once the Tories can start nibbling away at them.

And as an older traveller I can understand concerns about losing the EHIC protections. But then I voted remain, that being one of the reasons.

I mentioned this a few years back. local NW TV news did a Brexit news report every night just before the referendum. they went to a couple of NW companies every day and asked them why they wanted to stay or leave the EU. I think I only heard 1 honest answer from a company boss telling us why he wants us to leave the EU. he owned a small local bus company, he reckons EU regulations cost him money as he has to employ too many drivers, he would rather cut staff to the bone and tell/force his workforce to drive longer hours, he also said EU safety laws for buses are too strict, this also costs him money.  this is probably the real reason many companies favour leaving the EU.
One company owner said he wants to leave because of the EU bureaucracy, when asked for a example he said the EU ask him to fill in a questionnaire every month or so. he has to tell them how much cardboard packing he throws away. the interviewer surprised me as he seemed clued up on some of the facts. he told him he could guess or right anything down if he wanted as the EU never question any of the answers given. that's not the point answer didn't convince me.
I don't think many companies gave their real reasons for wanting to leave the EU. EU burdensome bureaucracy wasn't about filling in forms, it was about EU regulations protecting workers costing them money.

It might take our producers five minutes to find 60 economists who feared Brexit and five hours to find a sole voice who espoused it.

Yep,the Tories told us they would enshrine all those laws into our laws, they voted to kick them out at the first opportunity, all gone unnoticed by many.

Does anyone know if there's any legal requirement for Calais maintaining and policing the immigration camps and for keeping the port itself relatively secure against immigrants entering (the double metal fence is quite the grim sight!)?  My understanding was that it was largely a voluntary undertaking by France and was a goodwill gesture between two EU member states.  In recent years the UK has contributed a small financial settlement to assist.

If it is just a voluntary goodwill gesture then it's not hard to see that diminishing quite swiftly after 1st Jan, especially if the bravado boys in the government push through a no deal then blame the EU.

Could France theoretically throw off the shackles and wave the immigrants on their way to the UK, effectively moving the immigration camps from Calais to Kent?

That was always going to happen which made the "take back our borders" brigade even more laughable.

Like you say France will have no reason to help stem the tide, they want rid of them so they will hand wave them through. Wouldn't surprise me if they provide them with boats 😁

The onus will be on us to prevent them and with a disastrous government and no money it seems unlikely.

Taking it slightly further, I assume there is no reason for them to check lorries leaving the EU either?
"All the lads have been talking about is walking out in front of the Kop, with 40,000 singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'," Collins told BBC Radio Solent. "All the money in the world couldn't buy that feeling," he added.

That was just bullshit to get all the xenophobic public on board.  Brexit was ll about deregulation and avoiding the new tax avoidance measures for the people in charge.  They wouldn't have an issue with migrants entering the country, earning £3 an hour in sweatshops for example.

With a bit of luck,Nigel Frottage will be killed by stampede of immigrants rushing the beaches and we end up seeing a postmortem picture of Nige with a megaphone embedded in his face.
