PONGOLLE EAGER FOR REDS REUNIONJoe Curran 09 October 2008
Florent Sinama-Pongolle has admitted Atletico Madrid's forthcoming clash with Liverpool will be the biggest match of his career.
The former Liverpool striker has found the net four times in six appearances for Atletico since signing from Recreativo in July, and Pongolle is hoping to he can continue his impressive form against Liverpool in the Champions League in two weeks time.
"For me it's the biggest game in my career," Pongolle told LFC magazine.
"It's going to be very, very hard, but I can't wait to go back to Anfield - it’s something special."
With both teams currently level on points in Group D, the match at the Estadio Vincente Calderon could determine who finishes top of the group, but Pongolle knows how difficult it will be to get a result against a resurgent Reds team.
"We are both two really good teams, but Liverpool have experience over us and are favourites because they are always in the competition.
"But I think this season, Atletico Madrid has a very good team and we have started well and beaten good teams like Schalke, so a lot of teams wouldn't like to play us."
The French striker has blossomed in la Liga since his three-year stint at Anfield and is excited about returning to Anfield for the return match in November.
"Since I left, I have only been back to Anfield once. It was for the semi-final of the Champions League against Chelsea in 2007.
"I invited four players with me from Recreativo. What a game! I was jumping in the air and falling over people when Dirk Kuyt scored the winning penalty.
"I went out with all of the players after the game to celebrate as well. All of the Recre players couldn’t believe what it was like. There’s no atmosphere in the world like it at Anfield. "It was a good three years for me even though I didn’t play as much as I would have liked.
"I had a very good atmosphere with the fans and I know a lot of them wanted me to get a chance.
"I won't forget that because they were special to me and its only right that I wouldn't celebrate.
"Every player who has played there with a good relationship with the supporters would say exactly the same.
"It's a really special game. When Torres and Pepe come back to the Calderon, it will be really special for them and when me and Luis Garcia go back to Anfield, it will be special for us.
"The tie has everything and I can't wait. I would say it is probably the biggest game of my career."
