Thanks 4 that. Agree wholeheartedly with most.

For me Souness the player epitomises the perfect LFC club footballer. An uncompromising winner with talent to burn. Glenn Hoddle with steel. Add in his incredible leadership & you've got the perfect footballer.

Always played as Souness as a kid. Number 11 my preferred number for all my footballing days.
Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Pepe Reina & the fans who tried, led by Rafael Benitez will always have my respect & admiration for standing up & being counted when it mattered for the club. Everyone else can do one.

Great post!

We would win the league with him in our team, he´s one of the best midfielders of all time, no one ever came out on top of Souness. Fantastic captain and attitude. Like Roy Keane, but a better football player. Could pass it better then anyone else in England in the early 80´s, could score goals and was propably the toughest midfielder to come up against.

I know he´s very regretful for that The Sun article, and for the way he managed us, but I met him once and I just shook his hand and said he was the best midfielder we´ve ever had.

Came to think of this yesterday when I watched Batman..."I´m whatever Gotham needs me to be", I thought about Souness when I heard that.

He was probably one of the most hated players from opposition fans and players, he gave and took some horrific tackles... but he did everything for us and for Liverpool. All he wanted was for Liverpool to win trophies no matter how his perception from the outside world was.

Absolute monster of a player. The best single word to describe the player was uncompromising - confident to the point of arrogance, hard to the point of violent, brave to the point of reclessness, quality to the point of world class.

I suspect the lack of compromise in his make up may have been part of the reason for his disastrous tenure as LFC manager, because fool he ain't.

He will never be loved like Kenny, rightly, but he was at least as important a player to the greatest side this country has ever seen.

Of course it's relevant. You may not wish to forgive him but he was clearly fucking brilliant as a player, and I would hazard a guess that we wouldn't have had anything like the success we had without him.

It is a thread called 'My Favourite Player' - not 'My Favourite Person'. Simple solution, if you dont appreciate what he was as a player, dont come in to the thread.

Fantastic player.

Stand out moments for me personally:

Playing wise:      His hatrick against CSKA in the European Cup in 1981. Might be a trick of memory, but I seem to recall they were all 20 yard thunderbolts.

His volley against the Mancs at the Anny Road end on his debut [I Think]

"Tackling" wise:  His premeditated assault on David Cross on Man City. Early in the game, City were attacking the Kop end and the ball was played to Cross, who had his back to goal. Souness was tight on him. Cross turned towards goal, and as he did so, he caught Souness right across the nose with a very well placed and very deliberate elbow. Blood everywhere.

As a 15 year old lad watching from the Kop, I can still remember Souness pushing Ronnie Moran away as he tried to take him off. He was obviously very groggy, but he just wiped himself down and went looking for Cross. The Kop sang "Yozzer's gonna get ya, Yozzer's gonna get ya..."

Atmosphere was a bit weird for the next 10 minutes while nobody really watched the game. All eyes were on Souness who, shall we say, righted the wrong at the next available opportunity!

Still laugh when I hear modern players being called things like "Enforcers." Souness, Kennedy, Case, Smith, Jones. Play you off the pitch if you want, kick you off if you prefer. Enforce that.

I was in the Anny Rd end for that one (with an extremely gutted bluenose mate) and the 2 he scored at the Kop end were absolute belters. The one at the Anny Rd end in the 1st half was a bit nearer in iirc.

I've got three black and white photos of that hat trick, each of the goals, that were lying around in the Echo's archives a few years ago and given to me by a mate. At some point I'll see if I can scan them in and post them in here.

What qualities did Souness have as a player.

Aggression and the will to win..........none better.
Tackling..........like a bull. many of his tackles would get him sent off in the modern game.
Energy........he was all over the pitch.
Passing...........superb at the long pass.
Shooting.........he had a great shot.

Overall there probably haven't been any better all round midfield players who have played for us.
At his prime he was up with the best in the world.

He'd be in my "best" team.

I suggest the very honest opening post covers the 40 something supporters' difficulty with Souness.

Noone is saying selling his story to the S** was forgivable for a second, but he was a peerless beast of a player in his era and was very much a huge part of giving my generation of fans a lot to enjoy and remember. I wish he hadn't done what he had, and my memories of him as a player weren't tainted by his misjudgements later in life, but they are.

He's human, a long way from perfect, but I can't help trying to remember the player and how much of a hero he was to me when I was in my formative years.

Great OP. Outstanding summary on how fans who were around at the time feel towards Souness.

I was a huge Souness fan as a 10 year old and the first game I went to was the Milk Cup final replay at Maine Rd in 84.  He beat fat Nev from distance and made my night.

What I would say to some younger fans and anyone using words such as "unforgivable", is try to imagine that Gerrard had done a feature in the red top.  You would struggle to express how you feel about him in years to come just as some of us do with Souness.

Top 10 LFC of all time easily.

i dont think we have ever been the dominant force since he left us
i think dominance in his position is vital - keane and viera two other notable examples

the fancy dans always take the glory and always will

to me - and its only my humble opinion - he is our greatest ever player

we dominated european football with him as our captain

(i also think he was our worst ever manager)

have i said dominant enough ?  :wanker

He is arguably (if not probably) the most influential and therefore the best player we have ever had. Utter hero as a footballer.

The best centre midfield player I've seen. Think Alonso but better, stronger and with goals as well as an animalistic quality and desire to win. Somewhere between Keane and Alonso for the younger fans and you won't be far off.

He could pass like a dream, through ball after through ball for Rushie, he could shoot like a bullet, he could slow a game down so it was always at his pace - I watched him run the 84 League Cup final at Maine Road, bottles/blood and all like it was a stroll in the park. He could kill with a tackle, he was a leader, he was brave as a lion and never took a step back and when he played you never ever thought Liverpool would get beat.

Awesome. Forget the man, remember the player.

Fantastic choice and don't worry about making it Garstonite.

I can easily separate my feelings toward the player and the man. I actually felt his open apology on Goals on Sunday was sincere so the gulf of feelings isn't as wide, I quite like him. But please, please don't anybody debate that point and spoil an excellent thread, thats just my opinion and I'm not even going to touch on his spell as a supposed Liverpool manager The context is really in the title and I understand the dilemma many will have in choosing a favourite player, not just between Souness, Kenny & SG, but other great names like Hughes et al.

Souness was everything you could dream of as a player, we were truly gifted to have had the 3-times European Cup winner at the club. A winner is unequivocally what he was, there wasn't a sinew in his body that didn't get bruised in battle to take Liverpool to the heights we'd never have hoped for when post 1960's success visited us.

A hero, stalwart, leader and fighter are just some of the attributes that complimented his footballing ability. He exuded tenacity and personified class. There wasn't much he couldn't do which made his game hard to separate from Stevie's. Some will state he had far more character and less skill than SG, I'd agree on both accounts. But he lacked nothing and gave passion to everything.

Players like Graham Souness weren't even once every generation and now they're an unthinkable, intolerable breed. But what is certain is that he would be able to pull his punches and curb his tackling to slot in anywhere in the modern game. He wasn't a thug & a bully, he was a brilliant footballer with a brain far superior than the modern players in living on supplements and statistics.

Shooting, tackling and game-control came easy to him, he was and will remain above most men that ever graced a football pitch, so it needs repeating how fortunate we were to have secured his  services which will be indelible from our great history.

The adamantium of our spine in those glorious late'70s and early '80s.

A truly outstanding footballer, don't think I've ever seen a more complete midfielder as he had it all (and knew it too).

Also, regardless of past transgressions, to me Graeme Souness is LFC family, you may not forget but you forgive.

That foremost yes, but also he is held up as instrumental in us diving off that fucking perch allowing the Govan Tramp to crawl onto it. We plumbed new depths under Souness and some have never forgiven him for that either. Only the arrival of the OFC finally released that 'worst ever' tag around his neck.

Would captain my all time Liverpool 11. Such a complete player. In Kenny's biography he talks about how he knew if someone went overboard on fouling him and the ref wouldn't protect him then Souness would. Nobody fucked with him, and in an era of dime-a-dozen hardmen he was the genuine article. That in itself would be impressive, but he was a genuinely top class player on top of that.

You can't blame him for the rise of Ferguson. We've had lots of managers since and none have been successful at ousting him. Souness did his best as a manager but shouldn't be blamed if he wasn't successful; there aren't that many who can match Ferguson's record.

Anyway this thread is about Souness the player.

Sorry to add my bit,

My favourite non West Ham player,

A beast of a midfielder if he was Italian, French, German et al he'd be remembered worldwide as a truly great player. He'd have got into any team he wanted .

Hardest player I've ever watched but with talent to go with it .

Great idea these threads about favourite players really enjoy reading them.

No problem. Yep, the phrase "crunching tackle" was never more apt. But he stood out by what he could do with the ball at his feet and that combination was, and still is, as rare as unicorn blood.

The man - the player, was never more epitomised than the Dinamo Bucharest games in 84'. Broke the jaw of one of their players in the first leg at Anfield, at the away leg bossed the game under loads of pressure...*Phil Neal tells a great story that goes briefly along the lines off...the team coach is surrounded by the Romanian army and Dinamo fans before the game, they all wanted Souness, the whole coach is flapping, Souness just sits there, staring straight ahead and pipes up "Don't worry lads, they're all here for me" He never even batted an eye lid. Went out onto the pitch and they all wanted him, Souness gave one of his most complete performances that night(possibly only second to the final in Rome)*

Think it was Neal who also said that, that team you just knew could go anywhere and get any result they wanted and Souness was the leader.

"Oh why were we so gooood!" we used to sing on the Kop, was it because we were Liverpool, or was it because we had Graeme Souness?.... Debatable, but Souness' class wasn't.

An extract I found about him......

Although Liverpool fans remember Souness's generosity when he ushered Bob Paisley up the Wembley steps to collect the 1983 League Cup, he was also their favourite hard man. Souness's tackling was a thing of terrible beauty, though probably less so if you were a direct opponent. In a European tie in Romania against Dinamo Bucharest, the home captain offered a display of intimidation against Souness which ended with the Romanian going off with a broken jaw. Souness's autobiography was aptly titled No Half Measures.

But the physical aspect of Souness's play was always offset by the accuracy of his passing. Dalglish, his room-mate, said of him: "There's no one I'd put in front of him when it comes to accurate and dangerous passing. He wins the ball, then distributes it and dictates the pace of the game."

Later, as captain, Souness displayed the kind of leadership which marked him out as a future manager. Ian Rush, who came into the Liverpool team in the early 1980s, remembers him in the dressing-room. "Graeme used to go round every player at half time, fist clenched, geeing us up, telling us the game was ours for the taking. He pumped adrenalin into you. I can't explain the feeling to this day, but you used to go out thinking you couldn't lose. That was the Souness psychology."

We all acknowledge that discussing Souness is a tricky thing to do, and I don't think the dark side of him has been hidden in any way. I'd rather we spoke openly about his on and off the pitch activities and recognised that some of these choices in this series will raise debate and eyebrows. Its about players who made an impact on our lives, not just for some our most favourite player, but a player who is in that list.

I think Garstonite has done a very good job as I said, of negotiating the waters that flow around Souness and I also respect those who will have nothing to do with him. Equally I hope they will accept we can still admire his days as a quite brilliant LFC player.
Yep.

Don't apologise. :)

Did you like my bit about Julian Dicks ;D

Also, thanks to all for the comments. I've enjoyed reading the debate it's caused in my spare time.
