When's the next update for this, Prof?

Assuming it's not looking pretty!

There is no point now looking at how shit it is. We have 14 or so games left and we need to win around 9 of them.

I love the APLT.  Okay, this season it’s been grim viewing but it’s a bit churlish to shun it whenever we have a tough season. It’s still a great insight into how other clubs are genuinely performing. Bring it on Prof, we are made of stern stuff  8).

Either i'm going mad or the update was added earlier in the week.

Granted, it was terrible viewing and i'm glad it's gone, but i've been left here kinda questioning whether my sanity has gone to shit in a similar fashion to The Reds form  ;D

I don't really post here much, but I've been visiting the site for years now, through the ups and the downs. This is always the thread I look for first, as it's a fascinating read. It's definitely been easier reading some seasons than others, but I appreciate the effort you go through.

It's strange thinking that this is the same team that has excited me so much for the past few years. The season has been quite the car wreck, for many reasons.

I think that the injuries that have decimated the team show a big part of the tale, with a sad lack of confidence, and even quality in our remaining defensive players. I think the transfer window should have been the time to rectify the problem, but for one reason or another, the owners couldn't get in proper cover.

A recent personal loss has really brought all of this into perspective. I think I am at peace with our total lack of luck with injuries. and our form, to boot. If there is one club, and one set of supporters who can brush themselves off, and build themselves up again, it's us fucking lot!

Bring on the update, Prof. We all appreciate it even if we can't actually see ourselves anymore. ;)

Sorry.  In my head I actually had done the update.  Clearly not!

I think burying my head in between matches has a lot to blame for that.

My twitter has the update and a link to here which has gone.  So somehow the update was deleted I think.  I may have done that accidentally I guess.  Strange.

I'll post the tables again when I'm at the laptop.

Should we just go ahead and make us -25 now?

We're not winning our next 2 home games.

Thanks, Prof! Seems we've recovered from our nosedive a bit.

Too bad there's no way past Bielsa's on-form Leeds, next.

LFC are on -21 and not -23.

Arsenal Away was a Par 1.

Good spot, thanks.  The par score got messed up when the fixture order changed I think.

Spurs the only team from the top 7 with more home points than away points (though W Ham still have a home game left).
More proof if ever needed that it's not a real season.

A few interesting points that I think the aplt highlights...

We were -13 at the half way point (we were top in the real table at Christmas, but this was arguably a 'false' position).

We've played to par for the last 12 rounds of matches.  No one else has.

We knew at the start of the season our first half of the season was easier on paper than the second half.  Lots of difficult away games scheduled in the second half.

Our away form over the second half of the season was brilliant.  The lack of fans has clearly affected the dynamics of home/away factors.

Yep been saying for a while there’s no such thing as home and away this season. In fact ever since Natalie Imbruglia left home and away has been dead to me.

Just had a look at the table in different phases of the season:-

Matchdays 1-16 - 1st - level but clear on GD from Utd    Played 16  Won 9 Drew 6   Lost 1  Goals37:20   Points   33

Matchdays 17 -25  17th - 20 points behind City in first    Played 9   Won 2  Drew 1  Lost 6  Goals 8:14   Points    7

Matchdays 26-38 - 1st - 2 points clear of City in second  Played 13  Won 9 Drew 2   Lost 2  Goals23:8    Points  29

Just shows for all the negativity, we have had two good runs of form and one absolutely woeful one. Hopefully this puts some context into anyone who thinks we need to tear everything down this summer and start again.

We were pretty good for most of the season.

Just wanted to add my thanks Prof and all the contributors for an always engaging thread, even though the last 2 seasons have been ones that had less to reveal from it. But football's unreliability is part of its beauty, so I will look forward to this next season in hopefully less dramatic times.

Well said. And it's even more apparent when you think that during the first phase that you've set out, we were well and truly fucked over by VAR at both Everton and Brighton, whilst in the last phase we were fucked over by late equalisers that wouldn't have happened if we'd have just had Nat Phillips fit, let alone Van Dijk.
And if the rain stops, and everything's dry.. she would cry, just so I could drink tears from her eyes.

My thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread again this season. It is one of the highlights of the site for me.

This season I even appreciated the furlough break that Prof and others took. I think seeing the graphs plummet during the middle part of the season would have been bad for my health. Seeing the final positions, though, now that's something to enjoy! Proud of everyone associated with the club when I reflect on how much has been achieved, despite the horrible setbacks.

I was going to post something very similar to this, but I'd slightly revise it to be:

   Games
     P
     W
     D
     L
    Pts
    PPG
1- 14

4

31
2.21
15- 28
14
3
3
8
12
0.86
29- 38
10
8
2
0
26
2.60

Or graphically (Top 3 bars = 13 games, Middle 3 bars = 15 games, Bottom 2 bars = 10 games):

For me the turning point was the West Brom game (the first game of that second 14 game stretch) for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, it was the first game where we showed that we were going to struggle to break down the low block, and that became the blueprint of how to play against us at Anfield.  Secondly, it was a game which we were in complete control of and ultimately threw away by conceding a completely needless corner.  Having just beaten palace 7-0 this was our chance to extend the gap at the top of the table going into a run of very winnable games and I remember being far more frustrated with the result than I should have been with a draw at home, because it felt like a big moment in the season, and sadly it proved to be the case.  I'm definitely not blaming him for what happened next, but that moment when Jones dallied on the ball rather than just playing the easy pass or hoofing it up the field was a real 'sliding doors' moment.

It should also be noted that we really lacked any luck or help from referees/ VAR during that run.  I'm pretty sure we had decent shouts for penalties in just about every game that we dropped points during that run and didn't get any of them, plus we had to deal with referees constantly letting teams slow up the play by falling over under the tiniest bit of contact.  And the less said about VAR against both Leicester and Everton the better...

Ultimately injuries were obviously the biggest killer of the season, and although pundits will talk about the injuries to Van Dijk and Gomez, the injuries to Henderson, Jota, Fabinho, and Thiago were almost as damaging.  If Thiago would have been able to play himself into form and adjust to the PL earlier and had Henderson or Fabinho alongside him I think things could have been very different, and obviously Jota was a huge miss when both Mane and Firmino were struggling for form.  Plus of course the lack of a crowd at Anfield.  I refuse to believe that we would have lost 6 in a row at home had we had fans in the ground, even with all of the injuries and lack of form in the team.

Ultimately it was a hugely frustrating season, but one that finished up being the best it could have been after the middle part of the season.  I have huge confidence that next season will be far more like the start and end of this season than the middle.
