Weighing it all up. He's been pretty good for a free signing. I know he's paid a lot because of that. But still...

Great attitude and work ethic but shockingly bad at corners and free kicks. Bring someone in with great delivery from set pieces and just leave Milner to do the Duracell bunny impressions.

Been a good signing, always need a player like this in your team, gets up and down, works hard  and gives 110% and can play in a multitude of positions.

City could have done with him this season with the injuries they had.

James Milner now has 14 assists and 7 goals this season. More assists than the entire #AVFC team & 7 more than Mesut Ozil in 2016.

He's been consistent in putting the effort in but there's no way I would personally give him player of the season. Coutinho all the way, and even Firmino ahead of Milner.

Milner can put a mean cross in from either foot. That means he's always a danger, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. He's utterly frustrating when asked to actually create something apart from crosses. I'm not sure where that leaves him in terms of positions, because I do think we should have someone with more flair and quality down the wing. At the same time, he looked a lot less effective as CM.

When we are playing the sort of fast and exciting football of late then a player like Milner is a real asset. Similarly, he did pretty well at City when they were cruising. But things looked painfully dry with him on the side a while ago, culminating in that horrific Cup final performance from everyone.

He's experienced, hardly has a truly bad game and is a decent player overall. I'm happy to have him in the squad and being first choice in certain games, but I do think we should add more creativity to the team, and that could cost Milner his place.

Best crosser we've had since Gerrard wasf it enough to move to the wing at will?

Even with peak Gerrard, we didn't score as many from them as we are now. And I wouldn't even say we're particularly strong in the air. The benefit of constant, quality service from wide.

Can't argue with Milner's numbers really.

Deserved the MotM vs Everton. Milner, like so many others, is finding his role in the team.

Which is why he should play wide more often, he has a very good skill, he should play where he can use it and not in centre mid

If anyone else put in the assist numbers he does, we'd be absolutely raving about them.

Oh wait, Henderson did that for a couple of seasons running and we weren't particularly arsed.

Every team needs players like Milner. I know the Dirk Kuyt comparison gets trotted out for every hardworking player with technical limitations, but Milner really is a bit like that. Except he's way, way better at crossing the ball.

I get the feeling he'd find it more difficult to find the space to cross with a fullback marking him, than he does wandering out of his CM position. DMs and wingers rarely seem to track an opposite CM moving to the flank for some reason. Overload maybe.

City must rue the day letting his contract run down, great bit of business by the club last summer.

They let him go for Jesus bloody Navas.

Though, I think Milner came here because he wanted playing time and to be in CM. It's clear as day though he's better at RW. He's basically what Grosskreutz was for Klopp's Dortmund. Versatile and hardworking as fuck.

I dont think so, really. They might regret it somewhat, but they probaby aren't crying about it. They're probably sadder that the English player that replaces him in their squad is Raheem Sterling for £45m. There is more to a player than assists. Having said that, Milner is a player that we can use and will be very effective if Klopp uses him in the right role in the right games, and he will have a role to play in a successful Liverpool side that wins trophies.

Probably just a different slant on the word technical, but am I alone in thinking Milner is technically very good? He's not the quickest and won't go blazing past people that often, but he has two great feet (when crossing from open play at least), he's more than capable of buying himself a yard to get a cross in and his general control and passing are very good. He's not a tricky player, but he is very solid and has been underated for years.

He's not the quickest and won't go blazing past people that often,

And yet last week, in the 92nd minute of a sapping encounter having chased Dortmund around Anfield he bombed into the box like a man possessed.  I think the perception of the man is he is slow, methodical but in reality he's a beast of a man that would run through walls for the club.

Tbf they are very different skills - personally if the ball is moving I can hit it as sweet as you like but the moment it is dead it feels like a lead balloon to kick.
