2011 FIFA Women's World Cup
« on: June 23, 2011, 02:42:26 pm »

The 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup will be the sixth instance of the FIFA Women's World Cup, the world championship for women's national association football teams. It has been scheduled to take place between 26 June and 17 July 2011 in Germany, which won the right to host the event in October 2007.

The matches will be played in nine stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final being played at the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt. Sixteen teams were selected for participation via a worldwide qualification tournament that began in 2009. In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams compete in round-robin groups of four teams for points, with the top two teams in each group proceeding. These eight teams advance to the knockout stage, where two rounds of play decide which teams will participate in the final.

Group A

Canada
France
Germany
Nigeria

Group B

Group C

Group D

Australia
Brazil
Norway
Equatorial Guinea

Games will be broadcast on ESPN in the US and Eurosport in Europe; all in all, the competition will be broadcast in over 200 countries.

Last time the England womens team played in a World Cup, they seemed to be distracted by the thought of shopping for shit loads of shoes that they'll only wear once and then chuck in a wardrobe somewhere rather than actually playing football.

You're right, they'd  of worn the shoes at least a few times ;)

They played well in the Group stages, but they got picked off by the US i think in the first knockout stage, They were a bit dissapointing to be honest. Hopefully they'll do better this year

Just noticed that the BBC will only be showing the England games (excluding the final which they'll show anyway) I could of sworn they showed quite a few non England games in 2007

Marta is probably better than any of the players on the men's England or Brazil teams right now.

And some of the German players posed for Playboy recently.

NSFW obviously

I don't mind women's football that much, but I do find it hard to watch because of the slowness. It kind of looks like they're playing underwater with an oiled ball.

Is this a cooking show ?  Do me a favour love, make me some sandwiches yeah ?
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

It will be a great tournament.

Germany, Brazil, USA, Canada.

No real money on the line for the players. Only pride. They deserve the respect of football fans all over the globe.

Looking forward to watching the tournament.

The quality isn't that great .. but it's refreshing to see them get tackled, and just get up and keep playing instead of writhing around like a Nani ... or is that ninny, or maybe just a dieing salmon ?

The only reason to watch women's football is for the goalkeeping hilarity. You could fill a 5 minute Youtube video from one match :P

They don't dive, and they just get on with the game. Unlike Nani. Unlike Cristiano Ronaldo. Unlike Torres.
Socrates did have a habit of polarising opinion, as does Lucas. Lucas is also good at hemming opponents in and locking them into difficult situations.

I was recent on a course with a couple of girls who plays an work for Everton. One of them will be there with England because I've seen her doing the adverts for this tournament. Good luck to then.

Side note, it can be frustrating watching it. However before football was taken over by men it used to have huge attendance figures. I remember studying at University and one game at Goodison Park I became noticed of had close 50,000 these. Also around that time a game involving St Helens set the highest record for 53,000. How times have changed.

I love how people get so wound up by the commercialisation of the current game, then suddenly deride the quality of the women's game which has nowhere near the investment or dedication that even lower-end semi-pro football offers in England.

Sure, the ability levels aren't up to comparison with the men, but then what you're actually looking at is an international tournament where the players are playing for pride, not money, and a willingness to wear the shirt.

Women's football in England is a shambles, yet despite that a number of players are actually quite good. And when I say quite good, I mean that 95% of people who moan and bitch about the quality - be they men or women - would not even get close to being good enough to get into one of the top teams.

The American team is strong, and has been for years. That's because the sport is developing well, and women's soccer is coached and played competetively at every age group. The Women's Professional Soccer League gets national TV airtime, the College teams have full-time coaching set-ups and even the mid-range Division II college teams play two or three games per week and train up to 20 hours per week, every week, during the main season. This, whilst studying full-time too.

To be dismissive of the game because of a lack of quality is pretty arrogant - it's like saying 'I can't bring myself to watch Darlington because they're not as good as Barcelona'.

And if any of you are sitting there thinking you're better than most of these girls, then I can assure you... you're not.
I don't have to sell my soul... he's already in me.

Christine Sinclair just scored a superb free kick for Canada.

It's the first goal Germany have conceded in the World Cup since 2003. What a strike.

Sinclair is amazing. She has single handily kept women's football is relevance. Arguably even more relevant than men's football mainly because of level of success. (However, media coverage for both is still dreadful)

70,000 people were at the Germany game. That is amazing for women's football.

Any chance that it's down to the Klinsmann & Loew programme that includes women's football?

Just saw the TV ratings for the game in Germany. 14.000.000 (58% market share).
That's incredible. Just as comparison, CL-final ratings in Germany were 5.700.000.

I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

Fantastic strike! but Englands GK should have saved it.  I must admit I am quite surprised with the quality of the football, it isn't as bad as most people make out.  However there is one thing I will criticise and that's the quality of the goalkeeping.. it is pretty terrible.
