A member of the Hillsborough inquests jury has been discharged on the first full day of deliberations.

The coroner Sir John Goldring told the remaining jury members there was a "medical basis" for the woman being discharged.

Six women and three men will continue to consider how and why 96 Liverpool fans died in Britain's worst sporting disaster on 15 April 1989.

The jury was sent out on Wednesday after more than two years of evidence.

The hearings, which are the longest running inquests in British legal history, began on 31 March 2014 with the maximum of 11 jurors.

That number was reduced to 10 in February last year when a juror was discharged for "wholly exceptional medical reasons".

The minimum number that can hear evidence at an inquest is seven.

It is 14 questions on the whole. 5 of them are about the policing of the event.

Q6 -  "Are you satisfied, so that you are sure, that those who died in the disaster were unlawfully killed?"

These are the 14 questions the jury are being asked to consider :

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/questions-hillsborough-jury-answer-10787260

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/apr/06/hillsborough-jury-sent-out-consider-verdicts-deaths-96-fans-1989-fa-cup-

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Thanks for that.

I'm guessing that the reasons for those question is if the answers are yes, that then gives rise to the possibility of criminal prosecutions against the individuals and/or organisations?

Sorry again for my ignorance but what are the options on the actual verdicts for the cause of death?

Q6 - says was the cause of death "Unlawful Killing"?    So that is one option which (hopefully) the jury may find.

If the jury says no to Q6 - not sure what happens then, as that is the only specific question that appears.   Maybe someone else knows?  What it default to open verdict?  Or to accidental death?   Or does the narrative come into account?

Thank you.

Just had a quick look on here at the other options http://www.inquest.org.uk/help/handbook/section-4-3-verdicts but still not sure in this instance.

I believe each of the 14 questions needs a unanimous jury opinion to vote yes.

Only unlawful killing needs to be unanimous doesn't it?

Quote
The jury at the new inquests into the deaths of 96 people at Hillsborough in 1989 have been told that they must come to a unanimous decision if they are to reach a verdict of unlawful killing.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/apr/05/hillsborough-jury-set-to-consider-verdict

That's the only one where the media have reported that it absolutely has to be a unanimous decision. In that case and I am only assuming, perhaps majority verdicts will be accepted on some of the other questions.

Hij I believe you're correct there. The other 13 q's have that whole "on the balance of probabilties" angle built in but Q6 absolutely has to be unanimous on all 4 points therein, thus presenting the potentially ludicrous situation where all jury members agree on everything except for one of 'em not agreeing with just one of the points - ergo not unanimous.

Yes, I had read about the four tenants (and am concerned regarding them as you say).

For anyone who hasn't seen.

-Firstly, that as match commander, he owed a duty of care to the 96 who died
-Secondly, that he was in breach of that duty of care
-Thirdly, they must be sure that the breach of Mr Duckenfield's duty of care caused the deaths
-Finally, the jury must be sure that the breach which caused the deaths amounted to "gross negligence."

As we are sure you all know, the long, long process of the Hillsborough inquest is starting to reach its conclusion. RAWK and the media have been unable to comment freely on proceedings over the last two years, after the Coroner's strict warnings about statements that could influence the outcome being in contempt of court. However, we are expecting a verdict to be reached soon, at which point there will be a lot of emotion, information and discussion coming out into the open.

Some of you may not know that behind the scenes at RAWK an awful lot of work has gone into the whole process. After the verdicts, we will have things we want to say, and things we want shared to the largest possible audience. In preparation for this, we are asking you to follow @RAWKEditor on Twitter, and when the time comes, to share Tweets that relate to the verdicts and the years of hard work that have brought us to this stage.

For now though, please remember that the jury is still reaching its decision, and we cannot jeopardise the final weeks of the inquests by making further comment at this time.

Thanks.

Almost impossible that the verdict will be delivered tomorrow - the jury are under an obligation to give the media overnight notice of their verdict. The thinking is the verdict will come on Tuesday morning, but even this is not 100% guaranteed.
