How I missed this I never will know.    :duh   Fascinating - especially since your era is the same as mine.  More please.
Rather a day as a lion than a lifetime as a sheep.

I can only be nice to one person a day.  Today is not your day.  Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.
I tried being reasonable.  I didn't like it.  Old enough to know better.  Young enough not to give a fuck.

Oh no mate.  The thanks are all for you.  I was spellbound, quite frankly, hung on every word and I'm insatiably greedy for another helping.  I know you've got all manner of things going on, but I'm selfish enough to beg you for even a very little more.  Its a blessed and most wonderful insight that none of us will ever know otherwise.   :wave

Couldn't agree more, fantastic read and I'm always trying to give Vic a gentle nudge to write more, sometimes I don't think he realises how interesting it . Your story Vic is one of the best things about RAWK and we're proud to have it in here.

just for you vic and your wonderful family....

SEPTEMBER 2nd 2013...Happy 100th birthday Shanks....

Shankly’s Ark… A Tribute…

September 29th 1981

Was a very sad day on Merseyside

When one of it’s finest sporting servants

Left us quite suddenly, he left us and he died…

The disbelieving public

Could not believe this sudden loss

If you didn’t know Bill Shankly

I couldn’t give a toss…

But dear old Shanks he did not die in vain

Despite this empty great hole he left behind

He was one of life’s true gentlemen

He always spoke his mind…

That cold & brae December day in 1959,

When we were wallowing in Division 2

“Cowboy Shanks” had ridden into town

He had a simple message for me & for you…

As Chairman TV Williams went out on a limb

To change our sagging fortunes round

He saw something special in this Scottish man

What he’d found was sound as an english pound…

Our Shanks he had his Nessie

His football was his life

His passion has never been doubted

Football was his mistress, Nessie was his wife…

He started at the bottom

A pretty good place to start

He brought in Saint & Rowdy Yeats

He pulled sad old Melwood apart…

He introduced the 5 a sides in training

A brand new concept type of thing

He brought in short sharp ‘pass & move’

A simple bell he did ring…

With Bob & Joe & Rueben,

His Boot-room culture began

It formed the nucleus of his team

His magical new focus of a plan...

The Anfield faithful sensed a change

As crowds again topped forty thou…

We climbed to the top of Division 2

No one could stop us now…

He built up the momentum

His goal was clear to see

His passion was to take us to the top

Cos we were Liverpool FC…

And so Shankly’s Ark was born & open

As the chosen ones flocked in

You had to be quite special

For Shanks to let you in…

There was the Flying Pig Tommy,

Gerry Byrne & Chris Lawler

Willie Stevenson tight at the back

With Smithy & Rowdy & Crazy Horse Emlyn

They sure were a hard nut to crack…

They built up a tough reputation

That was true and then the KOP would sing

There was Cally & Saint and Sir Roger

Willie Stevo & Peter Thommo on the wing…

These worthy and true adversaries

Are forever inside Bill Shankly’s Ark

As they walk up that creaky old plank

To the light and not into Stanley Park…

In there are all our childhood hero’s

Whom we met every Saturday afternoon at three

They gave us what we needed

They re-wrote history…

So as years passed by there have been many

Who aspire to be hero’s each Saturday

So they can join the ranks of the immortals

In Shankly’s Ark, in January, March or May…

There was Clemmo & Larry & Alec,

Shanks was not scared to flush the boys out

He brought in some famous old sayings

When the Beatles were singing Twist & Shout…

“This is Anfield” sign was just a reminder

For his players to keep their feet on the ground

And he told them to remember who they were playing for

The many fans who had paid their two pound…

His aim was to make his team famous

He did this no shadow of a doubt

By playing good attractive and hard football

Week in & week out…

Shankly’s Ark is full of great players

Far too many to mention right now you’ll see

There was young Kevin & big Tosh & Phil Boersma

Stevie Heighway left them for dead (it was so easy)…

So we celebrate the great mans passing

28 years ago to this very day

I’ll bet he was looking down laughing

With Emlyn on the 25th of May…

He was looking for more hero entrants

To his Ark that we can all surely agree

That to enter you need to be a hero

And to play for the great Liverpool FC...

So for those that do dare to be courageous

To go that extra mile for the thousands of fans

There’s still some places up for grabs

In Shankly’s Ark…try to get in if you can…

so next man coming inside the Ark, is 'sick-note Harry'

our often groin-injured Aussie friend

with Xabi, Sammi, Didi & Alonso and wobbly-legs Jerzy

a special message did they send...

We miss you so much William Shankly

From Glenbuck, your star surely did shine

You laid the solid foundations

Of what’s yours and what’s certainly now mine…

You brought us back our pride and our passion

Hailed the Kop as they sang a song of our own

The door is still open to Shankly’s Ark now

May you never ,ever walk alone…

Bill Shankly ..100 not out....

and so it's 100 not out
for our very special Scottish friend
for millions of fans all around the world
Birthday wishes, they all send...

William Shankly, born up North of the border
we all know he was keen his talents to show
he was a very kind and humble man
but to look at him on a Saturday afternoon
you would never ever know...

Our Wullie had 4 brothers and 5 sisters
must have been a tough childhood growing up
played good hard football for Carlisle Utd
till Preston NE came along to snap him up...

they offered Carlisle a fee of Ģ500, a bargain
The terms for Shankly personally he did seek
was a fee of Ģ50 plus a Ģ10 signing-on fee
and wages of five pounds a week... !!!

he was good enough to play for Scotland
he was their wartime Captain for sure
he even scored his only goal against England at Wembley
In 1942, the score was 5-4...

he played some games with Matt Busby
another great Scot blue not red
Shanks' only Scottish goal was unusual
a 50 yard shot that bobbled in over the goalies head....

but he went on to become a coach and a manager
success was not evident early on, nae a sooth-sayer
he always spoke common sense and told it as it is
and reckoned he could spot a good player...

learning his trade through the managerial merry-go-round
Shanks learned to coach the hard way
but he was able to spot some real talent
that gift he had never was very far away...

he spotted Keegan and Clemence from Scunthorpe
St John & Ron Yeats from Jock-land
Gordon Milne & Peter Thompson from Preston
Stevie Heighway from Skelmersdale,
they all lived in Ainsdale by the sand...

Brian Hall, Alec Lindsey, Larry Lloyd & John Toshack
all joined the club and became a real force
but Shanks kept his 'coup-de-grace' till later
signing future England captain Emlyn 'Crazy -Horse'....

We'll never forget our Emlyn
his squeaky voice clear for all to hear
was a fantastic servant for Shankly & Liverpool
uttered the immortal words loud n clear
"Liverpool are Magic, Everton are tragic....''

Then Shanks shocked us all and retired
it seems he was burnt out and ready to leave
sadly passed away just a few years later
leaving millions of fans round the world to grieve....

His legacy will live on forever
his presence will always be felt
no one who knew him will ever forget
the day he stood on the KOP and yelled....
''ooooooooh, IIIIIIIIIIIIII, am a Liverpudlian,
and I come from the Spion Kop
I like to sing I like to shout
we support them quite a lot
we support a team that's dressed in red
it's a team that you all know
It's a team that we call LIVERPOOL
and to glory we will go............''

Bill Shankly is an absolute LFC Legend
there will never ever be any doubt
born 100 years ago we will remember
his name every game as we shout...

players will come and players will go
but they all learn one thing from day one
as personal glory they may seek
Bill Shankly put up the THIS IS ANFIELD sign
he told the players that they were privileged to play for the fans
cos they payed to come and watch them every week...

Happy 100th Birthday Bill Shankly,
you deserve your telegram from the Queen
one thing i'll never forget
you're the best manager there has ever been....

I'll finish off this little ditty
with a laugh, a smile, a tear, and a groan
because we miss the grumpy old buggar
Bill Shankly, You'll Never Walk Alone....

Vic that sounds a great idea, be brilliant if she could. I've always wanted you to get your experiences out to a wider audience, they're unique.  One thing that fascinates me about Mr Shankly and i'll call him that out of respect to you is that alot of modern coaching methods have started using loads of training with the ball, small games emphasising different things, now from what I've read Shanks (Sorry, he's always that in my head) was well ahead of the game in his coaching methods. I have a theory and i might be talking nonsense but while Shanks famous quote about football being a simple game complicated by idiots, applied to the ideas of the FA coaching guru's who were always coming out with theories that had little practical use, I think the idea that Shanks wasn't interested in ideas, was a bit of toffee. It seemed to me he knew exactly what he was doing and was always adapting his ideas when he saw things working practically. I remember himbeing one of the first to use ball winning centrebacks after his experience in Europe etc. The thing is you have the experience that few have. Apart from the obvious interest in Mr shankly the other interesting thing is how much things have changed growing up in Liverpool from when you were a nipper. It would be fantastic if Karen could help you out.

Thanks for your support Albie much appreciated You are right in your thinking of the FA and one man in particular Charles Hughes, as a young lad I met him and was very unimpressed, he just didnīt have a clue. It was wonderful when Mr. Shankly walked through those doors at Melwood and changed everything, he really disliked Hughes, the existing coaching staff had to follow Phil Taylor's training schedules. They were under orders ,we used to run on the roads from Melwood down Deysbrook Lane, then turn left up Croxteth Hall lane, half way down there was a road that cut through the estate and came out into West Derby Village, then down Town Row and back into Melwood, we used to run this in pumps, I donīt know about the others but the soles of my feet hurt like fuck. When Mr.Shankly took over training was a pleasure. He stopped us running marathons and we started playing small sided games, 5 a sides, two touch then one touch, fuck me I sweated more than the running, there were lads who didnīt want the training to end, me included, we were knackered but it was a lovely knackered., In all my years coaching out here in Spain I've had some wonderful times and experiences and put all I learned at Melwood into practice here, the Spanish lads really enjoyed themselves and it was all thanks to that wonderful man. I am thinking of changing the title of my story back to "I could have been a contender".What do you think ? I would love for us to meet up again, I really enjoyed your company last time.. I get angry when I hear our football language being changed just to make some person think he knows the game, SKY have changed almost everything and I hate it.

 Take care my friend

Sorry Vic, I didn't see your reply but I think it's a brilliant idea to change the title back. In one phrase it tells you about what the book is about and makes a pun bringing up images of that famous Marlon Brando scene. And if anyone could make that claim it's you. We all like to think we were good enough, If only there were scouts watching me play in the street in Fazakerley who knows ;D but the big difference is you were on the edge of one of the most underrated teams in football. My Dad used to say that in it's pomp the sixties team were better than the 66 England team and would have walked the World Cup. It's interesting about the training because Shankly was so far ahead of his time. I don't normally get too excited over training methods but one of the things that came up in the David Moyses thread was so many of the internationals of today hated his running training methods and were used to the ultra modern training with the ball playing small games designed to improve specific things. Never mind ultra modern the first thing I thought was that sounds like what Shanks was doing fifty five years ago.
I know Shanks ripped into all the coaching establishment laughing at their ideas but he was a thinker about the game and while he knocked their BS he did what he did for reasons and with all the modern ideas about training I think we are just catching up with him now and you were there and probably know so much. I think it would be interesting for you to talk with someone up on all the latest coaching methods and you couldbring out just how far Mr Shankly was in his thinking.

By the way the next time you're over I'd love to go for a drink enjoyed meeting you last time the sad thing is that was the night we met Ray for the first time.

Well my dearest Vic.  May I respectfully suggest you amend the title slightly to read "In My Life in Football - The Vic Gill Story, and put "I could have been a contender" underneath.

I think that is very strong, and could remove any confusion over a boxing connotation and is enticing to learn more.  I hope you don't mind.  Absolutely no offence intended my friend.   :-* :wave  And I'll queue overnight (or several nights) so as to be at the front to buy it whatever its called.

Cracking read that vic, had me glued to the screen.  As an oot/woolly back call me what you will, but i love the city, my missus now comes up with me and we stay down at the jurys inn by the docks.  I'll off to the game she hits L1 hard for the shopping and now and then comes to the game. Then we'll go out for a few bevvys and a bite to eat.  I have found a few interesting places and always try a new pub here and there.  Most of the people i meet when "up north" have been really welcoming.  Your article makes me understand the city/people a bit better, so the education your read gives is very interesting, when it gets published im deffo going to get a copy

thanks Vic - hope to meet you one day, even though i'm a southern scally.

My apologies for not answering your post until now, I havenīt been in my thread for a long time, several reasons but I wont bore you. Just recently I did an interview with the official LFC Magazine and it is out this week, it is a really class magazine, believe me I have met more than my fare share of Southern Scallies, I worked down South for quite some time  in Hertford and surrounding area anyway I hope all is well with you

Take care

Just stumbled on this. A fantastic read. Thank you so much for sharing part of your life with us.

It's always fascinating to hear about Mr Shankly but your success is that all of what you write is interesting.

Inspires me to have a go myself. There's so much the kids don't know about my life, I should put it into writing for them too...

Thank you Mike or should it be Michael, I only ask because a nephew of mine, him and his wife had a little boy, they named him Thomas but I called him Tom, after a while I was told by the grand parents that I must call him Thomas. to business at hand, I have become a little disillusioned with my "Life Story" and I am shaping up like a big tart, so again thank you for the boost.  .I am still amazed that your dad had "The Deysbrook". I have that photo and George off Facebook coloured it for me, what a difference from black and white, the guy is an artist

Take care Michael A

That's one of the things that comes across really well: you're too humble by far! If I could remotely match what you've done I would be SO chuffed.

Anyway, still not started chapter one yet... but I have started asking the kids what they know about my life. I'm calling it research. ;-)
