The Shawshank Redemption
« on: October 1, 2005, 11:47:23 pm »
What a brilliant film!

Just watched it on channel 4, for the second time- and well, it's my favourite film.

Very powerful story about a man wrongly accused of murdering his wife and her lover... and is sent to a prison with 2 life sentences. He then escapes after a friend is shot dead by the corrupt warden and his captain...

If you haven't seen it- go out your way to see it! Morgan Freeman plays the person's best friend in the prison- and plays the role beautifully.

Recommend it to anyone.

one of my top 5 films. Truly excellent. The story it's based on by Stephen King is good also.
"They were too good for us, particularly Kaka. Then we get a goal out of nothing, I don't even celebrate, just run back. Then Vladi Smicer scores and the belief starts to rise. And when I watch Xabi Alonso convert the penalty, I'm almost crying.''

Didn't know it was a book?! Does it go by the same name?

It's a novella- 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption'.

I read it as a compilation of novella by king. I think it might be the same compilation that "stand by me" also appears in but I'd have to check that.

Cheers hooded claw and mrblast! Didn't know it was a novella.

I'm going to have to get this book, as it's such a great story.

In the last 25 would you rate it above Das Boot?

good for its genre. Comedies never get the credit they are due.

A good watch, if a little too romanticized to be regarded the greatest.

Was flying back to UK once and was lucky enough to be in business class, anway Groundhog Day was being shown. I fell asleep half way through it (passed out more like  :hally). Woke up when it was being repeated on the same channel  ???

I had now fucking idea how far into the film I had seen  :-[

Thanks, mate. IMDB is a bit of a joke as their list suggests but what the hell. The AFI (American Film Institute) came out with their top 100 films of all time a few years ago and "Shawshank" didn't make it into the top 100. From memory it was Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Godfather 1, Gone With The Wind and Lawrence of Arabia.

I've always thought their list was pretty eclectic - weighted voting system etc and many of the classics are quite rightly up there.

Just went on that...

Definitely better than Godfather in my opinion... and Goodfellas should be in the top 10 for me...

Million doller baby in the top 100... that is one depressing film- I've got it but won't be watching it again...

Can't see Titanic anywhere either... thought that was one of the greatest ever selling films... same goes for Spiderman 1  ???.

Sales doesnt mean good, and Million Dollar baby wasnt very good. A total kick in the teeth to the art that is boxing and completely predictable for 80% of it, the 'twist' just made it feel like a separate film.
