I find it mad that clubs keep signing players like Borini. I have no ill-will for him but he's never demonstrated in his entire career that he could be a proven or consistent goal scorer.
He's never made it to double figures in league matches in his career. He got 9 in 24 for Roma almost a decade ago, since then his best league return has been 7 goals in 32 games playing for Sunderland on loan from us.
He scored 2 goals in 52 league games for us, 14 goals in 82 league games for Sunderland, and 4 goals in 51 league games for Milan. That's 20 league goals in 158 games in 8 years, an average of a goal every 8 games, and just 2.5 league goals per season! Not much better in all competitions over the period, 28 goals in 206, a goal every 9/10 games.
I appreciate that some of these games will be as a sub, and on some he's playing out wide, but surely clubs must have better options. In fact for balance I just read the following:
During his time at A.C. Milan, he was used by both, Vincenzo Montella and Gennaro Gattuso, in more defensive roles such as an attacking wing-back or wide midfielder in a 3–5–2 formation or even as a full-back in a 4–3–3 formation, on both sides of the pitch. His all-time favorite position is, however, as a supporting striker in a 4–4–2 formation.
Under the coach Marco Giampaolo, Borini made several appearances as a right-sided central midfielder in a 4–3–1–2 formation.
Says a lot about a forward if they end up playing full back.
