Fabio Borini

Only saw it now: Borini has been signed on loan with an obligatory buy-out for Milan! How on earth he managed to get this gig after his last season I'll never know, but congratulations, I guess?  :wave

15 games and 1 goal last season at Sunderland...

Wonder if he'll get any sort of gametime at all at Milan? He's home-grown in England only so even from that standpoint it doesn't make sense.

Also for a player who never kicked into gear to have played for Chelsea, Roma, Liverpool and Milan...

I may be completely wrong and he starts to bang them in for Milan, but dear me: aren't top clubs supposed to sign players that actually delivers for bottom clubs, not the players who flop in bottom clubs? I think joining Brendan at Celtic would've been much better for his career obviously.

Amazing lineup of clubs for a player that has never even had a mildly good season.

He had a mildly good season in Roma before he came to us, but aside from that, you'd think the top team train would've been gone for him now. Considering how his last season was I'd thought he'd be a lucky boy merely getting a gig at say Udinese or thereabouts this season.

Clearly shows that AC Milan are not top class anymore.

Maybe Montella sees him in a specific role for the team?

He is certainly not a player who dictates play.

In hindsight this guy was a terribly poor signing, sadly. Shows how much Brendan Rodgers was out of his depth in his first moments here if he thought Borini was going to improve us. We had no idea who Borini was plus he was young, so there was no way we could have been harsh when judging the him.

Myself, for example, i thought he was bound to be a positive signing because he couldn't really be any worse finisher, which we were desperate for, than the ones we already had. Suarez couldn't finish a sandwich, Kuyt was getting worse and Carroll was never good enough.

Just let that sink in, someone actually thought Borini was going to improve us. You can cry now, Cornelius

Came in the 75th min and scored the 3rd for Milan (0-3) at Ludogoretz (remember those guys?)

He's signed for Hellas Verona

At AC Milan he played in 75 games but scored a mere 8 times

we have not had a good run with Italian players.

To be fair we bought rubbish italian players. The only one above average we bought was Aquilani and he wasn't that bad to be honest, just made of glass.

I find it mad that clubs keep signing players like Borini. I have no ill-will for him but he's never demonstrated in his entire career that he could be a proven or consistent goal scorer.

He's never made it to double figures in league matches in his career. He got 9 in 24 for Roma almost a decade ago, since then his best league return has been 7 goals in 32 games playing for Sunderland on loan from us.

He scored 2 goals in 52 league games for us, 14 goals in 82 league games for Sunderland, and 4 goals in 51 league games for Milan. That's 20 league goals in 158 games in 8 years, an average of a goal every 8 games, and just 2.5 league goals per season! Not much better in all competitions over the period, 28 goals in 206, a goal every 9/10 games.

I appreciate that some of these games will be as a sub, and on some he's playing out wide, but surely clubs must have better options. In fact for balance I just read the following:

During his time at A.C. Milan, he was used by both, Vincenzo Montella and Gennaro Gattuso, in more defensive roles such as an attacking wing-back or wide midfielder in a 3–5–2 formation or even as a full-back in a 4–3–3 formation, on both sides of the pitch. His all-time favorite position is, however, as a supporting striker in a 4–4–2 formation.

Under the coach Marco Giampaolo, Borini made several appearances as a right-sided central midfielder in a 4–3–1–2 formation.

Says a lot about a forward if they end up playing full back.

He played 52 league games for us?! I can remember a handful. Can’t actually remember any goals he scored. Did he get one in that away drubbing of Newcastle?

I think he featured heavily in 12/13, especially the first half of the season, then went out on loan. Didn’t realise he played as much as he obviously did in 14/15. Have vague memories/nightmares of him and Balotelli playing as a partnership in some games though.

Careers like his make me regret never pursing football as a career option. Seems like there are quite a few clubs who can be easily hoodwinked.
Mark my words. Top 8 will be a massive struggle.
We won't make any big signings this season and we will go back to being a top4 club.

Yes, and he scored one at Villa away in early 2015 (2-0 win).

The same game Ricky Lambert scored? If so, someone could have retired off those odds!

That was a funny time on this forum. Didn't matter if he went on a barren run of 40 games, he had excellent movement and that's what matters.

Yes, the pair of them scored. Then somehow the same team won the FA Cup semi final. Ultimately a key factor leading to Klopp's eventual appointment.

Wasn’t he pretty good in his first season at Sunderland on loan? I remember this fella at the time who supported Sunderland at the time who always used to post Him doing that weird looking celebration Borini Would do after scoring ... always looked a bit like a nazi salute to me.

I’m surprised Borini hasn’t done a bit more in his career. Appeared to have all the makings of an excellent striker when he joined us ... in the end he just turned out to be a glorified Shane Long. No shame in that I suppose. I wouldn’t mind being a glorified Shane Long ;D

Aint that the truth!

And we barely had a lot of success with players with Italian names!

Wow, wonder if his wife is wanting to move back to Liverpool, she seems to spend a lot of time back here and they've got a baby now. He was at Verona wasn't he?
