His contract runs out in a year and he's not signed an extension yet. He's spent about 18 months training with the first team and has 45 minutes in a nothing fa cup game to show for it, Elliott has now come in and basically taken his space in the first team squad and there's not really a clear path to the first team in midfield at the moment. He might sign a new deal, get a loan and everything then is fine for now. But this is basically his only chance for the next 3-5 years where he has a lot of leverage. His england team mates are making moves in search of first team football, he might want that as well.
I think a loan for him would be the best course of action this season. I think he’s ready to be tested against senior competition on a regular basis.
As a local lad and lifelong red, I just can’t see him not resigning and trusting us to help facilitate that next step for him. Unless something has gone on behind the scene that we aren’t aware of- some kind of disciplinary issue or bust up or what have you.
And to be fair, he’s not exactly part of that same Brewster/Sancho/Hudson Odoi class of youngsters that has been able to really leverage clubs for opportunities. As talented as he is I don’t think sitting out a season will put him in good stead for his next step.
Anyway I hope this is all moot. Agreeing a new deal and finding a league 1 loan would be great for him.
