The state vs Fed thing has been resolved recently. That's one of the reasons that Manafort is now up on NY state charges. He probably won't get much if any additional time in the slammer, but Trump can't pardon this one. He'll have to see out the entire sentence.
That was purely a NY thing, where (because of an error/loophole in previous legislation), it meant that NY could not file state charges for the same crimes pardoned at the federal level. Though, given that NY was/is Trump's centre of business, and that NY hardcore about prosecuting Trump, it was an important change to legislation.

I don't know how to interpret that, but it certainly looks like a pardon is not a simple wiping of the slate clean.

And if Trump is pardoned but lies under oath...
Taking The Fifth is not an option if the witness is immune from prosecution. The judge can compel the witness to cooperate. In the witness refuses - as I understand it - the witness can be locked up indefinitely until they do cooperate.

Fantastic. I wonder if that is why Manafort is not getting a pardon?

Seems that Trump's buddy Jeffery Epstein's safe was cracked in the investigation yesterday and they found 1000s of picks of little girls and several CDs.

One of them looks like a blackmail CD labelled "Young [name] and [name].

I hope they charge all the dudes that 'borrowed' those 100s of girls and that there's a Trump among them. They didn't just use those young girls...they ensured that Epstein could continue doing it.

Trump official ‘re-victimized’ child rape survivors by charging middle-school girls with prostitution: Democratic senator

Labor Secretary Alex Acosta “re-victimized” child rape survivors in the highly-criticized case involving Jeffrey Epstein that Acosta was tasked with prosecuting as the US Attorney for Southern District of Florida.

MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes interviewed Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) on MSNBC during Monday’s “All In.”

“One thing we do know is that some of secretary Acosta’s prosecutors in his office prepared a massive federal indictment, a 50-plus page indictment, in Miami against — against Mr. Epstein and they had that there, and for some reason the decision-makers in the office just shelved that and went with this state law charge,” Kaine said. “What does that matter? Well, when he agreed to plead guilty to these state charges, they filed the plea in a — in a county court, where the victims wouldn’t know to look for it and then he got this cushy sentence in the county jail where he’s out during the day going back to work.

“So there are more facts to get at, but what I think is now undeniable is that the deal was illegal, it was kept hidden from these victims, it was outrageously light and secretary Acosta revictimized these young ladies by allowing it to be a prostitution charge, which is so insulting to label these teenage kids,” he explained.

“Some of these kids were middle schoolers, Chris. To label these kids, who were trafficked by Epstein as prostitutes, what an outrage,” Kaine concluded.

All the best people.

Having a good chuckle here as the 24hr news channel runs the orangutan's "never liked her anyway" rant against May and the UK ambassador. I like how, having seen what a disaster Brexit is, he claims to know how it should have been done. I'd love to know what advice he gave May. Fantastic. I wonder if that is why Manafort is not getting a pardon?
I think, it would be politically difficult for Trump to issue a pardon, and then for little potential gain (since similar charges could be files at the state level in manly/most (maybe even all) cases.

Speculation: Besides, given the circles Manafort moved in, I suspect that he might have greater concerns about opening his mouth. So, maybe Trump does not need to offer anything. /speculation.

US approves $2.2bn Taiwan arms sale despite Chinese ire

Quote
The US State Department has approved a potential arms sale to Taiwan, estimated to be worth $2.2bn (£1.76bn), the Pentagon said.

The deal is for 108 Abrams tanks, 250 Stinger missiles and related equipment.

China's foreign ministry has called on the US to "immediately cancel" the proposed sale.

Spokesman Geng Shuang said the action "grossly interferes in China's internal affairs and undermines China's sovereignty and security interests".

He also accused the US of violating the One China policy, under which the US recognises and has only formal ties with China and not Taiwan.

China regards Taiwan as part of its territory which should be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary.

The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said earlier that the sale of the weapons would not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The DSCA has notified Congress of the possible arms deal.

Its members have 30 days to raise objections, but are not expected to do so.

McConnell gets challenger in retired fighter pilot Amy McGrath
 Emily Tillett

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has a challenger in his upcoming 2020 re-election campaign. Retired Army fighter pilot Amy McGrath officially unveiled her campaign on Tuesday.

In her campaign rollout video, McGrath recalls writing a letter to her senator at age 13 about her dreams of becoming a pilot and the challenges women faced of being denied a shot of joining the U.S. military.  "He never wrote back," McGrath tells the camera. "I've often wondered how many other people did Mitch McConnell never take the time to write back or even think about."

The Democrat, in her 3-minute-long appeal, features Kentuckians who also felt passed over by McConnell's conservative policies, claiming the longtime senator has effectively turned Washington into "a place where ideals go to die."

"Everything that's wrong in Washington had to start some place. How did it come to this, that even within our own families we can't talk to each other about the leaders of our country anymore without anger and blame? Well, that started with this man, who was elected a lifetime ago," McGrath says of McConnell.

The former U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel graduated from the Naval Academy to become the first woman in the Marine Corps to fly a combat mission in an F-18 fighter jet. She went on to serve 20 years in the Marines, where she flew 89 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, targeting al Qaeda and the Taliban, before retiring and moving back home to Kentucky to raise her family.

McConnell has been in the Senate since 1985 and the majority leader since 2015. Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes launched a credible challenge against the senator in 2014, but McConnell still won with 56 percent of the vote. McConnell  unveiled his re-election campaign back in April, touting his deep ties to President Trump and the confirmation of two conservative Supreme Court justices in two years.

McGrath, a staunch military advocate with the campaign slogan "anti-corruption, anti-obstruction, anti-BS," narrowly lost a House race in the state in 2018. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and radio host Matt Jones have also been rumored to be considered as potential challengers to McConnell.

"Trump official ‘re-victimized’ child rape survivors by charging middle-school girls with prostitution: Democratic senator"

Is that true though? I'm talking about the headline specifically. The girls weren't charged with prostitution. Epstein was charged with soliciting prostitution from a minor, Kaine was saying (rightly) that using that charge labels the girls as prostitutes. They weren't charged with anything.

Until about 3 years ago I was incredibly proud to be a US citizen. Complete opposite now. I want to apologize to every foreigner I speak to. :(

You should have been doing it since birth. America is a fucking international disgrace and has been for decades, centuries. The only difference now is your current leaders are much more stupid, so it's much more obvious.

Some dear heart on Reddit put together a list recently of US "interventions", spoilered for length only.

Spoiler
America's first overseas intervention was to protect trade routes and profits in the Mediterranean, against the Barbary pirates.

The US successfully ethnically cleansed and genocided 100's of Native American cultures.

At the end of the 19th century America annexed hawaii to gain control of its sugar plantations and production. It then crushed pro-democracy movements in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philipines and annexed those countries from spain.

Between 1900 and 1945 the United states overthrew the government of Haiti, reintroduced forced labor, banned haitian creole, occupied Honduras, annexed panama from Colombia to secure control over the future panama canal

Between 1918 and 1939 the United States backed anti-communist as well as anti-democratic governments in Europe. American interests aided in the creation of Yugoslavia, Hungary an Czechoslovakia. Only Czechoslovakia became a democracy, though it was dominated by old Hapsburg era industrialists and landlords. The US backed the right-wing of the Chinese revolution during this time, after aiding in the suppression of anti-colonial revolts there in the 1890s and 1900s. America similarly sent tens of thousands of troops to crush the USSR in its infancy, part of a set of invasions that exacerbated and deepened the bolsheviks sense of siege. The US also supported british and french efforts to partition the former ottoman empire.

After 1945 the United States intervened in Greece to crush the communist resistance there, which led to fascist collaborators and old monarchists and nationalists seizing power there, creating the deeply unequal Greece that exists today.

Between 1945 and 1950 American cash and cannon played a key role in securing european colonial posessions and restoring French control of Vietnam, which had won its independence at the end of World War 2. For the next twenty five years America bombers, soldiers and ships killed three million vietnamese, over a million Laotians and ultimately helped to entrench Pol Pot's regime in Cambodia against its more moderate challengers. This was explicitly for profit, as Vietnam was a major exporter of rubber and bauxite (Aluminum ore). After that Americans overthrew democratically elected governments in Syria, Iraq, Egypt and attempted to destroy Algeria.

In 1954 Jacobo Arbenz, the popularly elected president of guatemala was overthrown by after trying to put his country's infrastructure under the control of guatemalan government. He also wanted to introduce labor laws and break up the big banana plantations owned by United Fruit, an American company, which had him overthrown and replaced with a series of generals who killed 200,000-250,000 civilians in a Civil War/Genocide that lasted thirty years. This is the origin of the phrase banana republic.

In 1953 Mohammed Mossadegh, democratically elected prime minister of Iran, was overthrown by American backed generals after trying to transfer control of that country's oil fields to the Iranian people. The company which agitated for his destruction would one day become BP. The Shah then granted Anglo-American interests control of Iran's oil economy, while he suppressed all progressive and secular forces within the country.

In 1954-1963 the US ignored the referendum on Vietnamese unification and installed an anti-buddhist pro-french regime in a majority buddhist country.

In 1960 the United States overthrew Patrice Lumumba, democratically elected PM of the DRC, because he wanted to fully decolonize the country and investfully in food-independence and proper development. The Congo has been ruled by dictators or wracked by Civil War since then.

The 1975 Australian constitutional crisis, also known simply as the Dismissal, where the US intervened to have the PM of Australia replaced by a liberal one that would maintain cheap coal prices for the US at the expense of Australia.

In the 1960's and 70's and 80's the United States intervened and overthrew so many revolutionary, reformist or popular democratic governments that I actually can't list them all here, so here are the highlights: Inodnesia: the CIA fed Suharto intelligence that he used to massacre a million communists, socialists, union organizers and civilians in Indonesia. The US later backed the indonesian genocide in East Timor, which killed 300,000 people.

Mozambique: the Americans propped up the colonial government and its partisans against african revolutionaries in a war that killed a million people.

Angola: the US backed the colonial government, and then funded a reactionary, ant-labor, pro-resource extraction movement against autonomist and socialist forces in a war that killed two million people.

Chile: after revoking mining concession granted at the point of british cannon in the 19th century, Salvador Allende, the popularly elected and pro-indigenous president, was subjected to economic blockade, particularly of food-stuff that caused triple digit inflation. When this didn't topple him, the US backed Pinochet in a coup. Pinochet impoverished the average chilean, drove the country hopelessly in debt, tortured tens of thousands of dissidents, dropped trade-union leaders from helicopters into the sea, and destroyed indigenous rights movements.

El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua: in the 70's and 80's the United States fought a dirty war against democratically elected and popular revolutionary governments in these three countries, over control of infrastructure and whether they would be stuck as extractive cash-crop economies. These wars killed hundreds of thousands of people, destroyed Nicaragua in its entirety, and involved the famed Iran-Contra scandal, which saw Arms-for-hostages deals brokered to fund right-wing death squads, mass rape and war crimes against nuns. During this period the CIA used cocaine smuggling to fund the dirty wars, playing a huge role in the origins of the crack crisis.

Burkina Faso: In 1983 French and American troops and spies overthrew the president of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara, who had achieved food independence and vaccinated 2.5 million people in three years, while also combating female genital mutilation, illiteracy and rural poverty. Sankara was a communist, and true to his values his only possession were his books, his clothing, and his bicycle. He died, and with him died the dream of pan-african liberation and independence from the debt cycle.

In addition to these countries the United States has installed unelected governments, destroyed democracies in, illegally invade, or forced extractive trade relations on the following countries (all since 1945): Colombia, Brazil, Argentina (twice), Bolivia, Venezuela, Grenada, Sudan, Somalia, Cuba, South Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Lebanon, the Czech Republic, most of the former USSR (particularly Russia, where the US stole the 1996 election for Boris Yeltsin, against Gennady Zyuganov), Haiti (thrice), Yugoslavia (American money was the key in Milosevic's rise and the fragmenting of Yugoslavia), the Philipines, and others which I have forgotten.

Between 1968 and the present the US has played a role in violently suppressing pro-democratic or anti-capitalist protest movements in: Saudi Arabia, France, Italy, The United States, Canada, Portugal, Germany, Yemen, Bahrain, Qatar, Morocco, Palestine, South Africa, Mexico and Thailand.

That's imperialism. The United States has never actually cared about democracy. When democracy was good for US profits, they backed democracy, when it threatened American profits they backed gangsters, landlords and fascists who smashed the hope of hundreds of millions. American imperialism operates by forcing trade concessions, low wages, bad working conditions and mal-development (infrastructure suitable only for extractive production) on the third world, most of the post-Soviet world, and even som first world countries.

Don't take it personally.

Everyone knows he's a gobshite.

Yeah. It's just that 30% love the fact he's a gobshite. He's sticking it to the political "man". They don't care that this attitude has long term diplomatic repercussions.

Agree. Shit comment to make. We're all well aware of American sins, and we're an intrinsic part of a great deal of them.

Not sure who "we" is in that sentence but I'm Irish and we never invaded anyone.

Same response.

Edit: Just to clarify my post was in response to Soxfan's post that he was "incredibly proud" to be an American until recently. And yes, "Great" Britain were just as fucking bad, but as Red Berry said, we all know about it so that fucking excuses everyone. That is a shit comment.

It's worse than that.

"Forty-four percent of Americans approve of Trump’s overall job performance, up a slight 5 percentage points from April and 2 points better than his peak early in his presidency."
https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-reaches-career-high-approval-faces-range-reelection/story?id=64117018

I am embarrassed to be an American. I really am. Until about 3 years ago I was incredibly proud to be a US citizen. Complete opposite now. I want to apologize to every foreigner I speak to. :(
I can even accept there are people who would broadly approve of him, but disapprove of the other side enough to hold their noses - but the idea of that say 30% rump who think he’s doing a good and that this is what a good job is, that absolutely kills me.

What I’m terrified of is that the damage that’s being done now, in the US and elsewhere but mostly in the US, won’t be undoable without a massive war, and that 30% will be the ones cheering it on.

Fair enough.  I'm English and am proud to be English.  That doesn't meant I condone all the despicable and unsavoury acts my country has carried out through the years.  But I don't think any country on earth has an unblemished record in that regard, so does that mean no one on earth can be proud of their nationality?

Anyway, we're going off topic a bit.

Why would you be proud of an accident of birth?

Never said it excuses. Saying there's a time and a place.  I didn't realise RAWK  was a place where we get to shit on fellow posters of long standing because of their country of origin. My bad.

Soxfan brought up the topic of being proud of his nationality until recently, and now not being proud.

Meanwhile, you literally interjected in an open discussion to say mine was a shit comment, and then you accuse me of shitting on fellow posters? You're special.

I interjected because I saw your comment. Normally I have you blocked.

You think being irish gives you some kind of moral high ground to lecture others about what dicks their country have been? Because that's what it comes across as.

There's a way to express that without coming across as a pompous, slightly bitter dick. You missed.

There's a really shit comment for you. Have fun with it.
