Randy Lerner spent hundreds of thousands of pounds doing up the Holte Arms pub by Villa Park for the Villa fans.

He used to live in Chester when he worked at MBNA the credit card company his father created, he lived in Chester where the European headquarters are for three years from 1999 to 2002. He must have known about Liverpool, been here, knows the region. Gillet touted himself to Doug Ellis and even this octagenarian saw through him, but Parry fell for him hook line and sinker, and Lerner landed in brum.

Even if Barry comes to us Villa will be just fine with this fella in charge. Whilst we're fucked, and a billionaire owner who lived 20 miles from Liverpool for three years of his life does everything right in birmingham. What a shame eh.

Not if you're looking to raise your profile.  You can't buy this kind of Worldwide publicity for a million quid.

There's a lot of cynicism in this thread, which is a disgrace.  There's no guarantee Villa will sell more shirts, so that theory is a bust - and they'd have to sell a shitload to make up the sponsorship deficit.  If the owner said 'I'll cover that' and this gets Acorns the publicity they deserve, so much the better.

The publicity will last for much longer than a single cash donation.

Very impressed Villa have done this, frankly.

I remain unconvinced about the benefits of "worldwide" exposure for what is essentially a local charity in the Midlands.  If you're telling me Villa fans from the Far East will suddenly open their checkbooks for Acorns, then a) I highly doubt it given the plethora of worthy causes in these poor countries and b) Villa have fans in the Far East?!  :P

Calling my point of view cynical is a bit insulting.  It's a wonderful act by Lerner & Villa in terms of lost profit for the club and publicity, I just question whether this is really the best way to help the charity.  I imagine having the AV team visit the hospices already raises a lot of publicity for the cause.

Lolzies. More chance of a wank off the pope than beating United, I'm afraid. It is beyond Benitez, apart from when they were at their lowest ebb, when we knocked them out of the FA Cup. They certainly aren't anywhere near there now.

I think this is exceptional and must be congratulated on all fronts.

I take my hat off to you Villa.

In this world of greed and money is great to see even little gestures like this being taken.

It gives Acorns national exposure, you nitwit.  I'm surprised you say you've worked with charities, because every one I know values publicity to raise the profile about their work and get the message out there.  I maintain that the potential publicity is more valuable than a single lump sum.  It all depends if your long term goals as an organisation are to feed a single years income, or raise your profile for years to come.  In my opinon, it's best to consider the long term of the charity than the short term.

And in actual fact, Villa would have gotten tax benefits had they just given cash to the charity - so the idea that it's cheaper for Villa to do the sponsorship is nonsense.

I didn't accuse you specifically of being cynical - I said there's a lot of cynicism in this thread.  Touchy, aren't we?

Yes, I am touchy.  Especially when you proceed to call me a "nitwit" and say you were talking about national exposure when in your post I quoted, you clearly said "Worldwide" (with a capital W, to boot) exposure.  ;)  Very mature of you.

Where did I say it's cheaper for Villa to do the sponsorship?

The charities I've worked with prefer cash, but then as you say it depends on their long term goals as well as their current situation.  In my case, the particular charity was already well-publicized and were looking towards ramping up their activities so they needed a bigger operating budget, which they were having difficulty doing because everyone wanted to donate in kind instead of cash.  Different situation, different needs.  I can't speak for Acorns but I do hope the publicity leads to more cash.

Well done them. Nice to see this type of gesture from time to time from the corporate whores that run this game.

Was gonna post that.

Maybe this is why they need so much money for Barry.

Manila Kop, it is Worldwide exposure as well as National.  Do you think Acorns would turn it down because the exposure isn't focussed locally?  I don't see why you're so hung up on me using capital letters.

The gesture will help this little Charity get more exposure, and that can only be a good thing.

I'm just bemused at the cynicism displayed by a lot in this thread.

Rox, I'm not hung up on you capitalizing the W.  I'm just bemused that you can call me a nitwit for arguing about the lack of benefits from worldwide exposure, which was your original point, and then you go and say you were talking about national exposure.  Those are two entirely different things in the context of a Midlands charity like Acorns.

You argue about the benefits of publicity, I argue about its limits and prefer cash.  Fair enough, we won't see eye to eye about this.  I truly do hope this deal with Villa helps Acorn bring its benefits to more people and reading more about the charity, it's clear the Villa has a very strong relationship to them.  Fair play to Lerner and the Villa players for lending their time and names to Acorns.

Well done, but in this era's Premier League millions are spent to just keep the team together, let alone buy players.
Someone should do the right thing - go back in time to 1992 and destroy the codes to Championship Manager before it is ever released

Rox, I'm not hung up on you capitalizing the W.

you clearly said "Worldwide" (with a capital W, to boot)

Made a point of it, though didn't you?

I'm just bemused that you can call me a nitwit for arguing about the lack of benefits from worldwide exposure, which was your original point, and then you go and say you were talking about national exposure.  Those are two entirely different things in the context of a Midlands charity like Acorns.

'Nitwit' is a rather irreverent thing to say, trying to lighten the mood.  There were much worse things I could have said.

Worldwide exposure is what they will be getting; but it is the National exposure that will help them most.  BUT, with this scheme, they are getting both.  How else would a little Charity like that get such exposure?

And in actual fact, they aren't different things because with the Worldwide exposure comes, by definition, National and Local exposure - the people who read the national papers, which will have photos of the players and the strips will probably be read by more locals than the local newspaper.  It is more exposure than that charity could ever have hoped for.
