Skybet Championship Thread 2018/19
« on: August 3, 2018, 11:49:27 am »
It all kicks off tonight and could be crazier and closer than ever!

There are lots of teams who would expect to be promoted like Stoke, Villa, West Brom, Swansea, Middlesbrough and even teams like Derby or Forrest who have had busy summers.

There will no doubt be interesting stories to follow. Biesla at Leeds, Lampard at Derby and hopefully Wilson and Woodburn lighting up the division! Potter and Moore at Swansea and WBA could both be feel good stories too.

From all those strong teams, who has the best chance of going up?

Who are the players to watch?

Who could be the surprise package?

Who will struggle this year?

Will Bielsa finally bring Leeds back up or be gone by October after too many fights?

Will Lampard be a shrewd appointment or is it too much too soon for him?
Let us never forget Rafael Benitez and what he did for us. A fighter full of guts and passion. A gentleman full of class and dignity. A football manager full of intelligence and pure genius. A Legend.
Adios Rafa, buena suerte.

What the fuck is Quest? Sounds like the channel Partridge presented his paintball show on.

Is any football left on any channels it’s easy to find?

Have skysports, BT or anyone done a preview show for the Championship? Like one with updates from each team, who the favorites are, pundits make predictions  etc.

If you know of any please share the link  :wave

Once again, the Championship looks to be one of the more intriguing leagues. I’m looking forward to it massively, and there’s plenty of interest to be found as a Red with the loans we’ve made.

I am in the unfortunate position of having many Stoke-supporting relatives who are all oddly fatalistic about the coming season. I think Ashley Williams is a crap signing, already clearly past it prior to his move to the blueshite. Etebo looks useful but beyond glimpses for Nigeria and attending the pre-season friendly against Wolves, I can’t say I know much about him.

Keeping Joe Allen is massive and credit to him for sticking around. Will be a club legend if he brings them back up. Afobe and Ince are excellent purchases for that level.

I’m also taking a degree of glee in the hatchet job Pulis is commencing on a fairly decent looking Boro squad. Gibson, Bamford and Traore are all seemingly leaving and the mooted replacements (Adomah, Freeman etc) all seem competent Championship signings that will keep them there and improve them in no measurable way. They will probably hack their way into the play-offs again.

Special mention for hoping Villa drop like a stone and Leeds play some interesting stuff under Bielsa, one of the stranger managerial arrivals in years. Doesn’t do things normally though does he.

All of them are massively dislikeable. I suspect at least two of them, maybe three, will be involved in the promotion discussion towards the end of the season though.

League One is going to be a laugh this season and I'm going to be keeping an eye on Fleetwood (Managed by the one and only Joey Barton)     Their 1st game is tomorrow at home to Wimbledon.

As for Sunderland, I am reading that they have brought in 11 players over the summer and I have no idea who any of them are, they come from teams such as Bradford, Sheff Wed, Peterborough, Burton Albion and Wycombe Wanderers.  Ohh, and I hear Jack Rodwell is training at Evertons Finch Farm facility while he looks for a new club.  I think Sunderland are going to struggle    ;D

Rodwell is indeed with the U23s.

One of my best mates from Uni is a Mackem and he’s in despair. Says they’ve had absolutely no coherency or cohesiveness whatsoever in their pre season games and they’ve looked exactly like what they are, a group of strangers. You have to fear for them. I expect they’ve too much quality to go down again, but lower mid table is a distinct possibility.

A cursory glance at their friendlies so far doesn’t make kind reading, drawing with Hartlepool, losing to Darlington. They did thrash a St Mirren side who were playing 5 triallists though. Looking at their squad, it’s basically a blend of new signings and Premier League failures who have refused to leave due to their massively lucrative contracts.

Derby having a lot of the ball, not doing anything with it. Reading will nick it, I reckon. How on earth Lampard leaves out last season’s top scorer, I’ll never know.

Terrible first half from Derby. Trying to play a passing style of football but with players not suited to it, resulting in them not leaving their own half and giving it away in silly places.

Doubt Derby will go up, there the Arsenal of The Championship, Derby have put themselves in great position to go up or at least make the playoffs, come March, last few seasons only to choke at the end of the season, even occasionally missing out on the playoffs altogether.

Indeed. Lampard clearly has attempted to get them to play the ball out from the back. I’d love to see his passing stats, because I’m guessing he’s given the ball to a Reading player more often than to one of his own.
