Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band

Captain Beefheart
Zoot Horn Rollo
Rockette Morton
Winged Eel Fingerling
Drumbo

1967-74

Love or hate him. Incomprehensible rabble or insane genius. The Captain was one of the true innovators in music. The story behind the making of Trout Mask Replica is one of the most brilliantly off the wall in music history. If you don't know anything about it then go read the wikipedia for the liner notes. The things he did would've probably got him locked up today - "At various times one or another of the group members was put "in the barrel", with Van Vliet berating him continually, sometimes for days, until the musician collapsed in tears or in total submission to Van Vliet." Jesus!

The Captain also happened to possess one of the great howlin' growling blues vocals in rock music. Rumour had it (which he started!) he could break glass with the octaves he reached. Legendarily nuts live as well as on record, my dad saw them back in the day and put them up with the very best. There's also a great story from Matt Groening about seeing them live in the 70s. They were waiting for what felt like ages and suddenly one of the Magic Band came on stage with a toy ray gun, pointed it at the audience and repeated the words 'ray gun, ray guy, pew pew' then disappeared again. The crowd roared with applause. Only in the 70s.

Oh and in the video below the drummer has underwear on his head and is wearing a monocle. It can't get better than this.

Frank Zappa (late 60s to mid 70s)

It’s dadrock Jim, but not as we know it.

I’ll be honest, I don’t listen to much Zappa. Occasionally I’ll go a bit mental for him but it tends not to last as long as my other musical obsessions and though he has moments, and sometimes whole albums, of utter brilliance, I actually find a lot of his stuff bloody hard to listen to.

That said, my dad would have conniptions if he found out I was in something like this draft and didn’t pick Zappa – he pretty much forced me to listen to him as a kid, which is probably about as dubious a parenting strategy as you’ll find this side of Josef Fritzl. So yeah, Zappa and his bizarre, comedic, frequently explicit version of experimental rock music is probably one of the main reasons I’ll never be accepted into polite society and have chosen to divorce myself from all trappings of modern humanity and go live in a cave in the woods.

What’s the music like? Er… Avant garde jazz rock with slight progressive, classical, and doo-wop tinges maybe? Something like that. I think he started off with fairly traditional rock instrumentation doing vaguely rocky stuff with jazzy chord progressions, did some quite funky stuff in the early 70s (the most accessible Zappa probably, and the version I’m going to choose) and had then fucked it all off by the time I was born in the 80s, when he was doing weird solo early synth compositions and had pretty much abandoned any pretence at commerciality. If you’re new to the guy I’d suggest listening to some of his early 70s output like Apostrophe or Overnite Sensation, or possibly his late 60s stuff like Hot Rats and We’re Only in it for the Money. Great albums, all.

Fun fact: Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water, learning crutch for guitarists the world over, was written about the time someone set off a flare at a Zappa gig at the Montreaux casino that burnt the place down.

Nirvana, In Utero tour. When rock n'roll came to East Germany the communists said it was subversive. Maybe they were right. When I came to England in 1993 as a kid, Nirvana were the band. They were cooler, sharper and, if not subversive in the same way as the Velvets or NWA, vital in a wild and unpredictable way. In retrospect they were one of those bands that shouldn't have got big but did because they were so good.

Anyway, they were one of the biggest bands in the world but chose to follow up Nevermind with In Utero, still one of the most challenging albums ever to sell millions. Pat Smear from the Germs was augmenting the core group on guitar and the loud songs had never sounded bigger or dirtier (and I needed at least one really loud band on here) while touring cellist Lori Goldstein was adding depth to the slower, quieter songs. A lot of the Unplugged in NY set was making it on to the regular shows by this point.

Underworld 1991 - 97

Underworld are a British electronic group formed in 1980 in Cardiff and the principal name under which musicians Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have recorded together. Darren Price has toured with the band since 2005, after the departure of Darren Emerson in 2000. Known for visual style and dynamic live performances, Underworld have influenced a wide range of artists and been featured in soundtracks and scores for films, television and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Do I even need to introduce Suuns?

Oh, probably. I only found them a few years ago but their psychedelic-ish live set knocked me flat at the Liverpool Festival of Psychedelia. Formed in 2007 in Montreal, I was delighted after picking up their albums - Images du Future is particularly sublime - and they scratch an itch few other bands do. I hear elements of early Floyd and krautrock in them, while still being original. Difficult for some modern bands, perhaps, but they seem the total package.

They are needed at my festival to add a bit of heavy psych to proceedings. Warning: Flashing lights and sub-bass sounds  8)

Here's one of their best tracks, "2020" which seems to capture a lot of their style:

The Specials/Special AKA 1977-1984

From Sydney to San Francisco to Coventry

If ever a band spoke to the nation about Thatchers Britain it was The Specials.  Unemployment, riots, inherent racism within the establishment and a youth with no future, Jerry Dammers and his band addressed these gloomy issues with his scathing lyrics against a Ska, rock-steady sound.

In 1981 riots swept the inner cities of Britain and The Specials released 'Ghost Town'.  Although their most commercially successful single it was lauded (and still is) by the critics as an extremely valuable piece of Social Commentary.

If you get chance I urge you to forget the 7" version of Ghost Town and listen to the 12" extended version which culminates with a magnificent extended Trombone solo by legendary Ska/Reggae session Trombonist Rico Rodriguez.  Rico himself could have got the festival nod as a soloist but I wanted him here with The Specials.

I've got every single ever released on 2-Tone records and wanted a 2-Tone band at my festival. A few to choose from but it had to be the founders.

In fact here is the 12" version of Ghost Town for your audio pleasure.

Blondie 1974-1980

I'm going to take my female selection now and what a female the lead singer of this band was/is!!  Captivating, cool, gorgeous (very), tough but most importantly super talented.

Years of stealing my elder brothers Blondie albums were some of the best years of my life.  I can still smell the whiff of Brut aftershave in his room as I hunted for his new copy of 'Eat to the Beat' to play while he was out.  If I was lucky I'd also find a copy of Rustler too :)

This act is my crowd pleaser at my virtual festival. The first 5 albums were all corkers and Blondie could have a stage to themselves all day playing their hits if I had my way.   Hell, I'd want to hear the whole 'Parallel Lines' album before we even touched on 'Plastic letters' and 'Eat to the Beat'.

Blondie have reformed again and still sound bloody good. Heard a few tracks of their new stuff recently and its not bad at all.

I'm having the very first original and best Blondie at my gig though.

2001 edition

You have probably heard of Radiohead. You might even like Creep!

Me? I like it weird. After OK Computer came out in 1997, Thom Yorke had a nervous breakdown, they reinvented themselves, got angry, sad, and started from scratch. Brilliant!

Here is why I'm choosing them in 2001. Their best live era. Sure, you'll get the hits from The Bends and OK Computer. But there will also be experimentation! My festival is gonna pull people in who will not be bored!

New Order

Arguably Manchester's finest, although the have some stiff competition. They are a great festival band, who do exactly what you'd hope for.

Quote
New Order are an English rock band formed in 1980, currently comprising Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman. The band was formed in 1980 by Sumner, Morris, and Peter Hook, who were the remaining members of post-punk group Joy Division following the suicide of vocalist Ian Curtis. They added Gilbert on keyboards later that year.

While the band's early years were shadowed by the legacy of Joy Division, their experience of the early 1980s New York club scene saw New Order incorporate dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation into their work, to critical praise. The band's 1983 hit "Blue Monday" became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time and a popular club track. In the 1980s, they released successful albums such as Power, Corruption & Lies (1983), Technique (1989) and the compilation Substance (1987).

By combining post-punk with electronic and dance music, New Order became one of the most critically acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s. They disbanded in 1993 to work on individual projects, and reunited in 1998. In years since, the band has gone through various hiatuses and personnel changes, most prominently the departure of Hook. They released their tenth studio album Music Complete in 2015.

The group were the flagship band for Manchester-based independent record label Factory Records and its nightclub The Haçienda. Their distinctive album sleeves and "non-image" (the band rarely gave interviews and were known for performing short concert sets with no encores) reflected the label's aesthetic and their long-term collaboration with designer Peter Saville.

Fun fact: although Blue Monday was the biggest selling dance single it lost money in the early days as the packaging cost more than they could sell the record for.

Sly and the Family Stone, c. 1969. Drugs, paranoia and bad timekeeping would eventually turn Sly Stone into a shadow of his former self but at the end of the 60's Sly and the Family Stone were smokin'. Stand is a great, great album and by all accounts they were amazing live. There are more than a few people who claim their 3.30am set was the highlight of Woodstock. Fun fact. Everyone's voice in the band matched their instrument, so Larry Graham's deep voice goes with his slap bass while Cynthia Robinson's more piercing voice matches her trumpet. Dexys Midnight Runners

Lot of fun these lads and lasses - or mostly one lad, obsessive oddity Kevin Rowland, and a revolving door of various musicians - loads of energy and great tunes. They started off as a sort of soully new wave ska hybrid thing for first album Searching for the Young Soul Rebels (probably their best, though this is the subject of some debate) and then adopted some Celtic influences, for reasons that I’ve never fully understood. It maybe shouldn’t work, but I’ve always felt that it really actually did. They’re probably best known for Come on Eileen, but I reckon that’s doing them a severe disservice and they’ve got loads of songs worth listening to.

About five years ago maybe, it was Christmas or New year’s eve, can’t remember which, me and my mate Brillo got wrecked in Hereford and ended up dancing to Geno on a table in a pub run by some big ex-army guy with a notoriously dodgy temper. Don’t know if he was SAS or regular, didn’t ask because it’s not the done thing apparently (UK version of the don’t ask, don’t tell policy maybe) but he was a massive grock who was getting understandably pissed off with us prancing about on his table like twats and had asked us several times to kindly step down onto the floor like normal blokes, table dancing is for attractive women only, thank you very much. We didn’t pay any attention cos we were hammered and well, it was Christmas. Or New Year’s. Whatever.

Anyway, the climax of Geno comes on and we’re singing and dancing like tits and then, bang, all of a sudden the bloke flips the table and we both go crashing down onto the floor, glass everywhere, Brillo’s got his forearm ripped open and the guy chucks us out, to add insult to injury, which seemed harsh at the time although in retrospect I can sort of see his point of view. Barred from there, cheers Kevin Rowland you strange, yelpy-voiced genius. The end. Shit story, but it’s the only Dexys-related one I can think of.

Great band, though.

Here’s a song I fell off a table to.

Talking Heads

David Byrne
Tina Weymouth
Chris Frantz
Jerry Harrison

Stop Making Sense - circa 1983-1984

The greatest concert film ever made? Maybe. All I know is every time I see this show I want to get up and move. David Byrne, like a cross between Jerry Lewis and your Dad trying to look cool at a 'disco', is one of the great charismatic showman and a brilliant musician to boot. Paired with long time collaborators the Tom Tom Club (Tina & Chris) they form Talking Heads, a band that skewed the mainstream by throwing together a mix post-punk, funk, african beats, pop and new wave, and somehow made it all work in perfect harmony.

Also, Tina Weymouth is boss.

I love a good slow jam. But there’s a time and a place for them, and it sure as hell ain’t at my festival! ;D Nope, my sole aim here is to cram as many energetic, uplifting acts into my line-up as humanly possible. I want to send the masses into a state of perfect euphoria…we here to part-EY!

So I’m thinking that after tickling the crowd with Parov’s electro swing, getting them grooving to Santana’s Latin rock and then slapping them across the face with a dose of Daft Punk’s finest party hits…..what would reeeeally send them over the edge? Some dirty, FILTHY hip hop, that’s what :D

I don’t listen to that much hip hop these days, but it was my go-to genre throughout my teenage years. I thought I was so cool as well :D We haven’t actually seen many rappers picked yet, so there’s still an embarrassment of riches left to choose from. So much so that I might even revisit this genre later on. But for now, I’m going to overlook the lyrical geniuses and masters of flow, as they’re not quite what I’m looking for. I want something deeper, darker, more sinister, and there’s one group in particular that fits the bill. Quite possibly the greatest duo in rap history, including one of the greatest rappers of all time in Prodigy. I watched these guys live when I was super young...maybe too young! Must've been about 14 and I couldn’t believe my eyes….or ears! Those hard beats and hardcore lyrics…the energy they extracted from the crowd that night is permanently etched into my memory.

It is of course…the one…the only…the Infamous…

Do they need any introduction?! I loved this band late 80's early 90's, I loved seeing Slash go at it on the guitar, I shouted songs out when I could. Axl was a douchebag yes but his voice was instantly recognizable.

They have so many songs I know off by heart. I'd have loved to see them live, never got the chance. Regrettable.

Oh and none of that crap stuff when the band got back together after Axl threw his toys.

Been uhm-ing and ah-ing over my female pick for a few rounds now. I quite like a few of the bigger names, but they don't really fit my festival's vibe. Could've gone with a great little rapper who collaborated with Mobb Deep but that would've been a bit boring...want some variety here!! Then I remembered this absolute beaut, the things she does with that violin...!

Sonic Youth

Kim Gordon
Thurston Moore
Lee Ranaldo
Steve Shelley

Circa 1987-1996

At around age 15 my Dad introduced me to Sonic Youth's Dirty and to put it mildly I was as confused as fuck. I don't even think I liked it. But I didn't want to disappoint him, so I gave it another listen and another and another and another, until slowly my head warped around their music and what once sounded like aimless noise and feedback became intricate crafted layers of neverending sonic bliss. It was like my brain had to be reprogrammed. Far from an easy band to get into, but one worth the effort IMO. 30 years of music ain't too bad to pore over either.

Another band of weirdos, another from New York. They are one of the most important bands of that period in redefining what a guitar could sound like -

Quote
Sonic Youth could only afford cheap guitars, and cheap guitars sounded like cheap guitars. But with weird tunings or something jammed under a particular fret, those humble instruments could sound rather amazing – bang a drum stick on a cheap Japanese Stratocaster copy in the right tuning, crank the amplifier to within an inch of its life and it will sound like church bells.

Loved these guys growing up. I’d put their second and third albums up against just about any other band’s in the history of music. Possibly a bit over the top, but I honestly think Rafi’s Revenge and Community music were my favourite late-90s albums and I’ve listened to both fairly regularly ever since they were released. They went shit after then, or worse anyway, but for a 3 year period (1998-2000) I genuinely reckon they were the most exciting thing in music.

So what are they like? Fucking brilliant is what. A heady mix of jungle, rap, dub, punk, reggae, bhangra, bits of trance and techno maybe and very political, which often irritates me a bit but for some reason never did with them. Probably my favourite live act as well, so they’d do well at a festival. I’ve seen them four times and came away absolutely buzzing each time – epic soundclash Rebel Warrior is the best set closer there is.

They never made it anywhere near as big as they deserved over here, probably because the British music industry was embroiled in the death-throes of Britpop and was looking for similar bands to continue the bullshit Cool Brittannia thing, but they did pretty well in Europe and became pretty big in, er, France, for some reason. Don’t let that put you off though, at their peak they were a truly stunning musical experience.

You may recognise these from the Almodovar film High Heels (Tacones Lejanos), takes me back to early 90s when me and the future Mrs Gregorio were courting, both of us were film nuts and this was a shared favourite, 20th wedding anniversary last week so a sentimental pick

Kraftwerk. Feel like all my bands so far are acts that move around on stage so who better to add some variety than someone electronic with a robotic presentation and a light show? Going for the 2010's 3D era - if there's one band that don't rely on looking youthful it's these guys, and their back catalogue is great. I love the staging for these shows, and yes, the punters will be issued 3D glasses.
