Any vinyl junkies out there....?
« on: August 3, 2010, 11:38:37 am »
Couldn't find an obvious thread so here goes..

Any of you collect vinyl, spend your weeks trawling websites, car boots, record collector etc?

Want to discuss your vinyl addiction?

Im interested in discussing useful websites, best shops (new / secondhand), nice shiny new releases with lovely packaging etc.

I'm looking to buy, sell, swap or merely chat about the plastic stuff if anyone else is up for it? :wave

Count me in.

Only got a real shit record player, but a great collection of records. Been meaning to get a new turntable but can;t find the space for it. My old one is so bad I only play 45s on it as I'm no so worried about ruining them - been wearing out the first Jimi Hendrix Experience single 'Hey Joe' - sounds 50 times better on vinyl.

Not playing LPs doesn't mean I've stopped buying them mind - sad I know - was over in New York a few weeks ago and picked up $100 worth - Curtis Mayfield - Curtis Live, Funkadelic's self titled 1st LP, an early Rod Stewart best of with some tracks I didn't have, The Band's brown album, some other stuff I've forgotten. I wanted to get the new Neu! boxset but it was like $180 or something.

Planning on making a trip to Probe this week to get a birthday present for my mate, will see what they've got in and how tempted I am...I've NEVER managed to go in and buy one record alone...

I've got lots of albums, but I rarely play them anymore.
I found most of them as MP3 or similar on the net and play them mostly.
Either true my MP3 player or with my PC's headphones.
Whenever I see a record store with old stuff, I'll have a look around though.
Sometimes I even buy something, mostly for the cover or sometimes to complete something that was missing.

bought a project debut record player, lovely piece of kit which resigned my 2000 cd's to the loft. Got sick of downloading shedloads of albums free on mp3, listening to them once and then moving on. Something really special about buying a 12", gatefold cover with booklet :D

been going to the monthly VIP record fairs for the last 18mths, pick up some great stuff at the right price

www.cdwow.com is a decent place for picking up new release vinyl at the right price as is www.whatrecords.co.uk and www.rockbox.co.uk

I've recently bought a record player and have started my record collection.  I'm only up to 20 titles but I only started 4 weeks ago.  I absolutely love it.  My typical routine these past few Sundays has been to hop on my bike, ride around Montreal or Ottawa looking for records, getting back home around 4 or 5 PM and play my new-found records while cooking supper/reading a book.  Sure beats putting on the telly IMO.

Also, I've found myself buying a lot of the stuff that I already have in mp3 format but I justify it to myself and my girlfriend by reminding her that I hadn't paid for it the first time around...

Still got quite a bit of vinyl in the loft. One of my favourites is a Cheap Trick LP, 'Live at the Budokan' in yellow semi-transparent vinyl.

Today, I picked up:

Born To Run
Graceland
Nebraska
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Bargains too.

VDM - all albums sound better on vinyl in my opinion.

Got a new record player a few weeks back, loving it.

Last played:
Stevie Wonder - Music of my Mind
Phosphorescent - To Willie
Link Wray - Singles 1963-67
Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar (45)

Loving it. Didn't believe the Stones one would actually work as it's a picture disc made in the 80s with the Sticky Fingers cover, weird shape but still did the business.

Stopped collecting vinyl years ago but started up again recently after picking up a USB turntable. Best purchase of my life, that thing.

Most recent acquisition:

Got a bunch of record frames on sale from a craft shop too (was there with my wife, shut it) and my living room is now decorated with all my favourite vinyl.

Where do people find it best for vinyl?

Secondhand shops, charity shops or internet?

Mainly after used records rather than new releases.

I'm in the states but I usually get them from second-hand stores or garage sales. The Maytals record I found off of the internet from some obscure Japanese reseller because I had been searching for that one forever but I rarely pay more than $1 for any one record.

Trying to pay no more for £5 for anything unless brand new and sealed and desperate for it.

Some good places online Nick.

Discogs.com is good for private sales – it's little more than a cataloging site that runs a marektplace where you can often pick up things really cheap. Deadformat.net is similar, and Vinylcollective.com has a great messageboard giving a heads up on new releases and reissues, and also has a sales section.

Otherwise, if you're still in Brighton, the Lanes are your friend.

Been buying vinyl exclusively for about two years now. I get sent a lot of new releases as promo cds which meant I was never going into record stores, which was depressing me a bit as it was always one of my favourite pastimes.

So I made the conscious decision to start collecting vinyl as much for the act of going out around town to shops and new places as much as anything. I set out a list of about 50 albums I really, really wanted to own on vinyl, and I'm just working through that (and spending a lot on other things not on it at the same time – I've about 70 LPs, at a guess, and maybe 8 at a push are on the list...)

I'll only ever really buy online if it's one of the albums on my list and I cant find it anywhere, otherwise I'd rather wait for the weekend or a free evening and head over to a couple of different stores and pick things up from a real person behind a counter that I can have a conversation with and maybe pick up a few tips from.

I'm a huge 60's/70's music fan and have decided to get a record player for Christmas. My mum & dad already have about 100 lp's in their room, some classics as well such as Imagine, Red & Blue album, Rubber Soul etc. I love bands such as the Doors & Hendrix but when listening to them on cd I feel like I'm missing out as the songs were made for vinyl. So can't wait to chill out to the Doors on my new record player. I'm going to check all the sites posted above as well, but does anyone know anywhere in town or in Liverpool itself that sell lp's? I know HMV has a small section but thats about it.

Hairy Records on Bold Street, Probe Records near the Bluecoat, they'll sort you out with some proper good stuff, Hairy is all dusty second hand stuff(can well build up a nice collection of 60s stuff from there) and Probe is just a great selection of all kinds of new and old.

Got my record player for Xmas but I had no idea you had to play it through stero speakers. On it's own the audio is barley noticeable and there are no volume buttons. However there are two cables at the back, a red and white one which connect to the speakers. Anyone know any good speakers or what I need to do next?

Seriously, check if the record player has an RIAA preamp built in.

If it hasn't, simply plugging it into the aux port of your amp won't be good enough as you'll get a misrepresentation of the sound as some frequencies will be at the wrong level.

If your amp has a record player input, usually marked cartridge, plug it into that instead.

If it hasn't, and few cheap consumer amps do anymore, get yourself one of these....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RIAA-Phono-Turntable-Preamp-Pre-amp-copy-Vinyl-PC-/330508893594?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiFi_Amplifiers&hash=item4cf3dd7d9a

...or something similar (this is very cheap so probably not brilliant but you can spend crazy money on attempting perfection) and put it between the deck and the amp.

Trust me, there's a difference in what the sound will be like.

At the risk of sounding like a tool, I don't know if it came with the preamp, I don't think so. All that was in the box was the turntable which came with a plug and the two wires.

So do I need to buy a preamp?

You don't need to.
If you are happy with the sound, with what you are hearing, that's usually good enough, and depending on the material it's quite possible you won't hear any difference anyway.
But, without the correcting circuit to adjust for the RIAA equalisation on vinyl, what you hear will not be quite what the producer/artists intended.
Personally, I'd always go with a correcting preamp, I can hear the difference, but there again, while it's fine for high ambient noise surroundings I'm one of those that dislike MP3 through a proper hifi, finding it sonically incomplete and with strange artifacts and it often shows when played back to back against pristine condition vinyl (difficult to get)  or high bit rate source material.  But that's just me.

Filler will be along in a minute.

Anyway what are our favourite bits of vinyl then?

Been meaning to drop in here! My collection is pretty pathetic compared to many, especially Mr Mojo Risin's up above! Lovely. I've got about 8 foot of it (LP's) and I reckon I'm about 16,000 foot short of where I'd like to be. I haven't ebayed for a good while (2 years probably). I've got about 3 inches of Fall LP's, about 9 LP's short I think for the full set.

I dream of a room with a full size snooker table, big windows and the walls stacked tighly floor to ceiling with vinyl. It's got one of those ladders on wheels you see in grand libraries, and the bar is stocked with gin, and a large block of moroccan is sat on top of a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable. *wipes tear from the eye*

For the where do people buy vinyl bit... I'm always going thru the small boxs of vinyl when i'm forced into charity shops... even this christmas I was with wife and child looking for presents in this big antique/retro/furniture/niknak place that's opened up near me and lo and behold stacks of vinyl. So I'm fingering thru it and pulling bits out and then the wife gets narked... 'I thought we were looking for presents.' Must go back there... 4 for £10.

eBay can be addictive - one day I'll possess every Zappa LP - maybe in 2040, and then there's car boot sales which can be good. Picked up 4 Cat Stevens LP's for £6 last time i went to one. People often make comments about what the hell you'd do with winning £30m on the lottery and what have you but me? That would be a piece of piss. ;D

Got some great bits lately.

Some REM early LP's in mint condition, Band On The Run and a few more modern albums as gifts.

Just prefer everything about them compared to CD's and MP3's. The sound, the smell, the artwork and the fact you have to listen to the record more carefully.

Love live vinyl.

The sound, the smell, the artwork and the fact you have to listen to the record more carefully.
Love live vinyl.

Spot on, warm and natural sound, you just love it. Although you sometimes get clicks, crackle or other little worries, the LP format beats CD everytime, and easily in my books.

I bought an early 70's british vintage turntable about a year ago, the one like this: http://kuvat.huuto.net/f/04/448084445ee305f8ad8f86ef514c3-orig.jpg
Playing old records with old equipment is the thing that fascinates me. Vintage fool, that's what me friends call me. I've never bought a new LP, and never will.

Been collection LP's for a year now, and am up to about 170. More and more records flooding in every month. The original 1st press releases are the ones I am interested in. But naturally, you have to pay good money for those albums, especially if you're into basic 60's and 70's rock, like I am. The Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Zeppelin, and that likes. Those bands are the ones I've been collecting. UK eBay is the place I go for buying them, as I don't really have other options. Not too many proper record shops around here, which sell those records.

Latest purchases include:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III
Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band - Live 1975-'85
Jam, The - Setting Sons
Otis Redding - The Immortal Otis Redding
Jam, The - This Is The Modern World
Byrds, The - Younger Than Yesterday
Yes - Close To The Edge
Hollies, The - Hollies' Greatest
Byrds, The - History Of The Byrds
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Kinks - The Great Lost Kinks Album

All 1st issues.

Better go and put some stuff spinning again. Good to see a thread like this.

At the risk of sounding like a tool, I don't know if it came with the preamp, I don't think so. All that was in the box was the turntable which came with a plug and the two wires.

So do I need to buy a preamp?

Tom, post us a link to the turntable you've got.

Posted here mainly for Mr Tsubasa's benefit.  Saw them supporting Caribou recently and they were beyond brilliant.

Own Meat Is Murder and Sonic Youth's Evol on first press.

Don't really collect. I'm a CD hound. More about money, I guess.

Been meaning to drop in here! My collection is pretty pathetic compared to many, especially Mr Mojo Risin's up above! Lovely.
Built up over a good few years.
The house music i've collected was from when i was dj'ing, buying at least 40 12 inch a month.
But my 'normal' collection started back in the mid eighties. I've got near enough all albums by
the Doors,Floyd,James Brown,Hawkwind, , Simon and Garfunkel, Led Zepp, Nina Simone, many more i can't be arsed
to type. Then along the way i've picked up albums to listen to that i've heard one record of ,either at a mates house
or on the jukebox/radio,  and also bought a few collections off people .
On the weekend i moved my decks down into the summer house, and along with that a pile of vinyl
that probably measures 3ft by  8ft.  Not been in the loft yet, but one side of the bedroom's clear now!!!
DON'T BUY THE  SUN.
