My Favourite Player #18 - Emile Heskey
« on: December 17, 2012, 12:35:58 pm »
Have you heard the joke about Emile Heskey?  You know the one "Emile plans to open a pub when he retires – because he’s great at putting shots over the bar" or how about...You see there's plenty about and it's one thing that always scunners me, how can a man who won 6  trophies for Liverpool and 62 caps for England be labelled as a joke?

It was in March 2000 that Gerard Houllier managed to convince the Liverpool board to pay out a fee of £11m for 22 year old Emile - a club record at the time. Most pundits thought it was a gamble but Houllier knew what he was buying. In Emile he had a powerhouse of a centre forward, someone who could hold the ball, run at defenders and was great in the air - sure, he was rough round the edges and wasn't exactly prolific in front of goal but that didn't matter to Houllier.

Houllier believed that he could educate and polish him into a complete player and help become the perfect foil for our other strikers. Fowler and Owen, as good as they both were, did not possess the brute force Emile did, something that would bring a new dimension to the Liverpool front line.

"He's big and strong and the important thing is that he will give Liverpool a different dimension. Robbie Fowler and Michael are two of the best strikers in the Premiership and they are both fast, but I think signing Heskey gives them a different option. He can change the game for them." Ian Rush on Heskey

Heskey made his debut against Sunderland at Anfield a few days later and had an immediate impact. Most fans had barely had a chance to sit down as the game kicked off and within 60 seconds he had won a penalty kick as he was bundled over by a Sunderland defender in front of the Kop. Patrick Berger took the resulting spot kick and smashed it down the middle. Liverpool had chances to wrap up the game but some things never change - despite being on top for 70 mins of the match Sunderland went up the park and equalized through a Kevin Phillips penalty. Although the game finished 1-1 the signs were there, for the last two months of the season Heskey was to play another 11 times scoring 3 times, finishing the season with 3 goals in 12 appearances. In the remaining fixtures the Anfield Faithful had seen what the boy could do and if he could get a partnership going with Owen or Fowler then surely success would come - and boy did it come!

During the summer most Liverpool fans were eager for the season to start. We had finished 4th and missed out on Champions League qualification on the last day after losing at Bradford, a result which meant we had to settle for the Uefa Cup. The previous season we had seen glimpses of a partnership between Heskey and Owen but who knew where it would take us.

Houllier had decided his tactics were going to be 'Big man Little man' meaning that Heskey was number one and the second striker would be one of Fowler and Owen. With the latter being quicker, Heskey and Owen were often the preferred pairing. It was in 00/01 when Heskey really left his mark and proved Houllier was right to spend so much on him and prove all those doubters wrong if for a couple of seasons or so.

Something just clicked with Heskey that season and he was like a man possessed. He scored the winner on the opening day of season against Bradford and just never stopped scoring. For a man who 'wasn't prolific' he finished the season with 22 goals, some important goals at that. Who can forget that perfect hat trick away at Derby, when he ran riot, powering home a thumping header and an unstoppable right-foot shot, before completing the set with a left-foot finish from a Barmby cross.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/Xme2LN07qaI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/Xme2LN07qaI</a>
Heskey with the perfect hat trick at Pride Park
Heskey had it all that season - pace, power and he was as strong as a ox with the ball. The Kop loved it, seeing Heskey pick the ball up and just charge towards the opposition goals at pace, defenders not knowing what to do tackle or snuff him out and before they knew what to do he would let rip with that right foot of his. His left foot wasn't bad either it got the fans roaring, we loved it.

Heskey  was to score 22 goals as we won the Quadruple of League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup (plus the Super Cup) but it wasn't just his goals that I admired as I watched him more and more - it was his all round play. It's here where I finally understood why Houllier had wanted him for so long and why, rather than accept defeat and look elsewhere for another centre forward he continued in his battle with Martin O'Neill for 6 months to sign him. I saw why he was so important to Houllier's vision for the team.

"You take players not for the number of goals they score but for the role they can play for the team."
Gerrard Houllier on the lack of goals from Heskey when signing from
Leicester
By the time opposition managers sussed him out they would stick two men on him sometimes even three. All That did however was create even more space for his partner in crime up front - mostly Owen who at that age would usually finish it off.

Heskey and Owen Celebrating
Maybe it was the change in tactics, maybe it was a one off but Heskey never reached those goal scoring heights again for Liverpool.  He scored 13 times the following season and went from goal scorer to goal provider especially for Michael Owen who benefited greatly when playing next to big Emile. If you look at the partnership of the two they scored 117 goals between them in 4 seasons (172 games to be precise) A lot of the goals Owen scored were due to Heskey doing all the leg work - using himself as a battering ram with Owen doing the easy part of putting the ball in the net. It was your typical big man wee man routine, and while Owen won all the praise for his finishing and won European footballer of the year, Heskey went along with his business quietly doing what was good for the team rather than what was good for Emile.

"I’d play anywhere the boss told me to”
Emile Heskey
In his third season at Liverpool Houllier had decided to use Heskey as a more of a left mid than a centre forward - to the detriment of the player. Out on the wing he seemed to lose everything he was good at. Up front he would collect the ball and run straight at the heart of defence or win long balls and flick ons for Michael Owen, but on the wing he was hampered. He became more defence-minded more often than not and was only visible in games when defending. His confidence was dwindling and the longer the games went on you could see the man who once was a terrifying giant was now terrified mouse. If only Liverpool had Dr Steve Peters back then he might have kept Heskey's confidence sky high. Things might have been different and could have led to greater things but he was never the same. Maybe Houllier was to blame for continuing to play a man so out of form and continuously out of position - who knows, all we know is that he wasn't the same.  He had the odd flash of brilliance here and there and similar to the Spaniard at Stamford bridge fans would proclaim “he's  back” but it never did materialize. Maybe he just lost that hunger, maybe he had peaked at 23. All ifs and buts of course but we were never again to see the beast we had seen in his early years at Liverpool - the dominating centre forward who charged at defenders and bullied them, making loads of space for his partner.

At international level for England he again brought the best out of his team mates up front. I spoke about his partnership with Owen but people seem to forget that in the qualifiers for South Africa Rooney loved playing up front with him and was most productive when playing up front with Emile. Although he never hit the heights at international level (does anyone ever peak for England) he was part of the team that beat Germany 5-1 on their “Owen” patch.

Heskey making it 5 in Germany
So I hope I've helped put Emile in a different light. Maybe I’m alone in thinking it but for me Heskey although he may not have been the greatest player to wear the Liverpool shirt, had other attributes. He helped the teams in others ways - he might have stopped scoring on the pitch but he still did all the leg work for his partners and was the perfect foil for others. All the headlines went to Fowler, Owen and even Gary Mac, while Heskey was a footnote so I hope that one day we might look back at his time here, watch the season review of 2000/2001 and remember fondly a man who is often lambasted for being a flop. He did all right you know, winning 6 trophies in 4 years.

I was a great fan of Heskey. I thought he was a pretty decent player myself. If there is one game that stands out for me when thinking of big Emile, it is the 4-0 demolition of Leeds away 01/02?  He had recieved the ball on the run if I remember correctly but I think a bad touch took the ball wide and away from goal and it was the exasperated looks and the throwing of hands up in the air from Reds sat behind the goal that could be seen as it had appeared he had missed his chance but he slotted it from such a tight angle and I just went nuts. As did the travelling Reds behind the goal. For me personally that was the best of his goals alongside his goal against Roma.

Great original post. Cheers.

I've met him a few times through people I know at Villa.

I have to say, he's one of the nicest man I've ever met. He found out a friend of a friend had cancer abroad, asked me for his email address and kept emailing him during his treatment.

He's still deeply in love with Liverpool. His 5 year old plays for our under 6s. Last year, when the travelling Kop sang his name at Villa Park, he said that we were special fans and he was absolutely buzzing.

The few times I spoke to him about his time at ours, he said that he never wanted to leave. I never really had the balls to ask him why his form went like it did to be honest (who would?). But from what I gathered from him, the whole mood at the club changed with Houllier's heart attack.

Last year, after he was getting stick from Villa fans, I bumped into him again. I told him that he needed to shoot on sight, that he needed to sop working tirelessly for others, and stop trying to set up everyone, that people were not going to give him credit for that. He replied that that's not the way he saw things, and that he's always been about the team. I guess that sums him up more than anything.

People forget what he did in 2000/01. He was an absolute monster for us. Do people remember when we lost 1-0 at home to Ipswich? Gerard played Owen and Fowler up front and left Emile on the bench. He got slaughtered for that by the fans and the Ipswich players said that it gave them a big lift when they saw the teamsheet. He was absolutely unplayable at times that season.

Look at his goals from that season again. Long range howitzers, dribbles and smashes, lobs, power headers, cool finishes... Even the season after, he scored some fantastic goals (Bayern Munich in the Super Cup, 2 at Leeds, Roma...).

He was played far too much and then way out of position. He lost confidence too. And with the likes of Mcallister and Litmanen leaving, the team lost some senior pros too that Houllier never replaced.

Sad that the man has become a national joke; though I can somehow understand it.

Thanks to the OP for bringing big Heskey into a more positive light on here.

Loved this

I recall a visit to Anfield in 2001 where he was upfront with Jari. We played Man City in the FA Cup and won 4-2. Seated about 4/5 rows up in the lower centenary and Heskey was a powerful machine that day

Great memories and again a great write up taking us back down memory lane  :)

He had everything required to kick on and make himself a truly world class centre forward, very similar to Drogba, in that he simply bullied defenders, more of a psychological barrier than physical with Heskey, he was his own worst enemy, in that when he missed a chance early in a game, his confidence plummeted, whereas other top strikers would have put it behind them.

That fourth goal in that video is as good a goal as you'll see anywhere.

Took my son to the Tranmere v Leicester League Cup Final just before we signed Heskey [so me lad could see the old Wembley before it was demolished].

Heskey was, to be honest, total shite that day. Had one of those games where he spent more time on the floor moaning at the ref than he did on his feet. I was mortified that we were even thinking of buying him to be honest, especially at the price being talked about.

Never really rated him after that - for all his power and pace, he never fulfilled his potential for me. Too soft all round, and no real desire. I found him to be a very frustrating player.

Played his part in some memorable wins though, and as has been said on here, he is a really really nice lad.

I work with someone who knows him well, and he showed me a text that I wouldn't put the details of on here, but lets just say that the time it was sent, and the one word content, showed that his loyalty was to LFC, and not the team he was on the bench for at the time!

He was one of those strange players who seemed to get worse with age. But when he was in his prime he was outstanding, his partnership with Medalthief was one of the best too. What I loved about him was tha the always seemed to score late in games. Granted you would prefer to finish games off at the start but when Heskey was at his best you always got the feeling there was somethign left in the tank when others were tiring.

I personally loved the mad bastard. There was no real reason to, he just seemed so genuinely happy when he pulled something off it was contagious

fair comments mate but i think folk seem to focus in on the goals aspect of Heskey, He was so much more than just a goal scorer, i think first two years when he was played in his proper position (upfront)  he was immense in games i only touched on a few games but one of the reasons i always had a soft spot for Heskey was what he done for other players something that's often overlooked or forgotten. Look at the goals Owen scored here he played a big part and i said in the piece he often played in a way which benefited for the team rather than what helped him Houllier pushed him out wide cos he knew he would run all day long but once his confidence went he was never the same so agree he never fulfilled his potential but its harsh to say he had no impact at all

Saw him play at Filbert Street on both sides of Leicester/Liverpool. Now a cult hero, I remember when my Grandad (a Leicester fan) was raving about him when he first broke into their team: 'Cor he's like a steam train when he gets going'. The frustration for me was that Heskey never quite seemed to realize he was that steam train and the stick he got from opposition fans and the media eventually wore him down. Was actually a valuable part of every squad he went to, and that doesn't go for too many players.

Lovely guy and a boss write-up Azi. Nice to have a left field choice to read.

Brentie is right with how good his variety of goals were from 2000-2002. I’d forgotten about that Bayern Munich Super Cup goal. Having not seen it in 10 years I’m almost certainly guilty of hyperbole here but at the time I reminded me of Ronaldo in his Barca pomp the way he burst between two defenders using pace and strength and then coolly dinked the keeper.

A shame how his career fizzled out but we shouldn’t underestimate the role he played in that amazing season.

Never mentioned anything about goals in my post mate, nor did I mention anything about impact.

Just said that he was frustrating - he looked like a heavyweight boxer, but he often went down whingeing like a little girl. Used to drive me mad.

Fair point about the help he gave others-seem to recall that he was every other striker's favourite partner, whether that be our lads or Ingerlund's.

Met him in Leicester once and would agree that he is one of the nicest blokes you could hope to meet.
Real down to earth, humble & a genuine person.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he donate his signing on fee (when he joined us) to Leicester City?

Always felt that if he had a bit more aggression he would have added another 10% to his game.  He was a real powerhouse who really should have gone on to dominate CB's for years.  Remember him bullying Keown & co at Filbert St when he was still at Leicester - scored a great goal too.  When we were looking to sign him I understood what GH had in mind - an ideal foil for Owen.  That partnership proved to be a successful one over the next few years for us.

Never understood the decision to play him out wide and once he lost his confidence he was never the same player again - his lack of goals became a stick to beat him with.

Personally, I liked him - great first couple of seasons, hardworking team player who always conducted himself in the right way.

Thanks to the OP for reminding people that he did do a good job for us.

Great read and thanks for writing  :wave

He's probably one of the most underrated strikers to have played in the PL and for England. Nobody ever gives him the credit he deserves. If our players in our team now achieve what he has in regards to trophies, they will be very happy with themselves.

On another note, its amazing that we brought him for a record fee at 22 years old when we already had Fowler and Owen so he could 'give us another dimension'.

'Sigh'
We’ll still finish in top four - and they won’t. You can quote me on this in May.

good read

we wouldnt have won the treble without him.

following season he actually began well, scored in both games with Haka, aswell as a superb strike against Bayern Munich and one against bolton, only thing then was he scored 1 in about his next 30, was against Sunderland, we played most of the match with 10 men and he was an absolute collosus though he didnt score again for months.

finally got back on track against Leicester (he always seemed to score against them) and then followed that up with another terrific performance against Leeds, it was a real 6 pointer and we ended up winning 4-0, he had a hand in 2 goals and scored the other 2, the first of which was absolutely magnificent and it was for a long time my favorite Liverpool goal. He seemed to find his feet again and scored a lot of important goals for the rest of the season against the likes of Ipswich, Galatasaray, Middlesborough and Blackburn.

The following season as said he struggled as it seemed Houllier was trying to shoehorn in him Diouf and Owen into the starting 11 so in doing so Heskey was shunted out to the left wing, I only watched a full match there recently against southampton on Lfctv and he was a battering ram, setting up two goals and he covered everywhere, however he had another long spell without a goal mid season and he ended the campaign with a poor total of 9

The following season he seemed to resume some decent form but i think a lot of supporters lost patience with him when he missed an absolute sitter at home to Man United and we lost 2-1 (he was clean through in the last minute and just fell over). He seemed to have lost his confidence and as said in original post he became a bit of a pussycat and seemed to be just brushed aside off the ball too easily for someone his size, by the end of the season the writing was on the wall.

all jokes aside 60 goals in 4 seasons wasnt anything to be sniffed at and he had a decent haul of medals for us and like dirk Kuyt he never gave anything less than 100%

It's a shame but he's probably the one player I've had to defend most against my non-Liverpoool mates

Heskey LAD:  ;D
Manchester United could win fifty titles, but they will always be the Rolling Stones of football. Good, just not quite that band from Liverpool.

You should literally be skinned for such a fucking daft answer :o
