Red legend.

Congratulations,George.
Suddenly I turned around and she was standin' there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns
"Come in", She said, "I'll give you shelter from the storm."

I might be in!

Does anyone know why he changed his policy of not announcing goalscorers names? It's only been the last 7 or 8 years that he's been giving them out. He used to claim he didn't need to because the fans "should know who all the players were anyway" but it isn't always so simple when you're sat in the Kop and the goal is scored in a crowded Anny Road penalty area. Or by the opposition.

Maybe he's not always sure himself when we score at the Road End. When we beat the Mancs 2-1 in 2008, he gave the Wes Brown og to Riera who was the nearest Liverpool player to it. Last seaon he gave Dirks 1st v the Mancs to Suarez despite the ball ending up in the other corner of the net.

Happy 40th anniversary at Anfield George.

Part of LFC folklore. Players, managers, owners - they've come, they've gone - but there's something reassuring about the fact that George always seems to have been there.

Seemed to upset Roma a few years back I remember after we'd held on to knock them out the Uefa cup (the penalty, what penalty match?). Bit of a commotion when he played Arriverdechi Roma at the end.

Who did it before George?

That video never fails to make me well up.
As for what George said at the end, it sounded to me like, "the ball was well over the line, so fuck you Jose."   ;)

I watched it yesterday and was close to tears. What an incredible 3 weeks it was.

My mates wife used to work for Universal Music and supplied George with some of his material before they emigrated in the summer of 2009. We met George before the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough and despite him being busy that day he picked us from Lime St, took us around the museum and got us into the Kop. All this was not long after he had a health scare.

Anyone know what he said after the Chelsea game?  Cant hear it properly on the you tube clip.

I'd like to say a very special thank you toeach and everyone of you tonight. I've heard some noise in this stadium over the past 30 odd years but tonight took the biscuit.

Thank you each and every one of you.

A few other team slag him off as boring but I couldn't imagine anyone else talking us through pre match.

No finer phase 'part of the furniture'. He's seen it all at Anfield and is a legend

I'm guessing the reason why he doesn't do the team sheet is the partnership with Radio city. First handing over to Phil Easton and now the other guy (who's name escapes me).

The only small problem i have with him is how he judges how YNWA is played. There are times when he's faded it out halfway through and the crowd can't carry the noise. Then there is times he's let it play through when the crowd can carry it and the fans get drowned out

I've heard it remarked on the radio and the telly that the PA system at Anfield is the best in the country.  But it's not the system, it's George's voice, it cuts through the rest of the noise so you can hear it clearly.  Often on the radio he can be heard announcing the scorer or the substitutions and the commentator just says "well you heard that, you don't need me to repeat it".

I was at George's first game but as a sprog awestruck by everything else going on I didn't notice a difference from the previous games.  I'd bloody notice now if he wasn't there.

The things that fella's seen eh?

Well done, here's to the next 40 years.

George Sephton
« Reply #116 on: February 24, 2016, 01:32:58 am »
Quote
The Voice of Anfield, George Sephton, is today celebrating his 70th birthday and to mark the occasion we look back at his time with Liverpool FC.

The Anfield stalwart is in his 45th year behind the microphone and is currently the country's longest-serving stadium announcer.

His first game was back on August 14, 1971 as the Reds faced Nottingham Forest and, four-and-a-half decades later, Sephton will be on hand for Thursday's Europa League tie with FC Augsburg.

His busy matchdays include building up the atmosphere by playing the club's famous anthem, 'You'll Never Walk Alone', from his office in the corner of the Kop.

Other aspects of the role involve the joyful and sometimes unfortunate task of informing the 45,000 people within the stadium of goalscorers, as well as announcing substitutes and entertaining spectators at half-time with music and scores from elsewhere around the league.

During his time with Liverpool, Sephton has witnessed the team collect a series of honours, including 11 league championships, five European Cups, six FA Cups and eight League Cups.

He actually landed the job at Anfield in rather unusual and coincidental fashion after he sent a letter to then chief executive Peter Robinson about his fit for the role at a time when the club was looking for a replacement.

He made his debut on the same day as Kevin Keegan and from that moment on, Sephton excelled and has gone on to establish himself as part of the furniture at the world-famous stadium.

The lifelong Liverpool fan has seen his job change over the years but he often uses the same old tricks of the trade to try to get Kopites in fine voice.

Ahead of crucial games, George has been known to play music of the loud variety in an attempt to encourage the fans to out-sing the PA system and therefore generate a special atmosphere within Anfield.

And not only do the supporters feel a great connection to the man with the voice, but players and management understand his dedication and importance to the Reds too.

Kenny Dalglish once said: “George is part of the history and tradition of this club and it would be more reverent if he left than if I left.”

Everyone at the club wishes George a very happy birthday.
