Your favourite World Cup goal
« on: May 14, 2014, 10:25:04 pm »
Easy for me. Cambiasso v Serbia & Montenegro. Football at it's glorious best.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/q5W6vBI3mGE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/q5W6vBI3mGE</a>

Followed closely by Bergkamp v Argentina. A goal like this in the dying moments in a World Cup quarter final. Sublime. Oh, and just incase you can't make it out from the first commentary, it's Dennis Bergkamp  :D

Good shout that. Loved that goal obviously due to him being a Liverpool player. I can still admire it's quality, but don;t get the same enjoyment out of it as I used to.

In my lifetime/that I actually remember watching live, it's a toss up between Bergkamp vs Argentina and Owen vs Argentina.

I remember a few pearlers from Mexico '86. Laudrup dribbling through an entire defence, a Russian fella (Blokhin??) smashing one left footed into to the top corner from about 40 yards, Maradona's goal in the semi against Belgium and also Lineker's goal against Poland, one of his hat-trick where Steve Hodge crossed from the left and he hit it on the half volley. Great goals.

I can't be arsed looking on You Tube. I'm sure they're on there.  :P

also from 78, that Dutch team loved a long shot and Arie Haan scored a couple of beauties, against Maier and Zoff no less.

Grosso in the 2006 semi final.
Probably not the greatest in terms of technique or skill, but the tension of the moment, the occasion, the reverse pass from Pirlo that took 3 Germans out, the side foot finish, the mad, delightful celebration and my soft spot for the Italians make it my favourite.

That Negrete one was my early favourite Barney! I reckon for sheer technical brilliance in a high pressure situation then Bergkamp's takes some beatings.

For sheer "whoooa, did I just see that" factor I absolutely love Maxi's volley.

Me too. Love that goal. Baggio's vx Czechoslovakia was pretty special too. Agree with the shout for Cambiasso vs Serbia as well.

But Spain vs Nigeria in 1998 had a couple of special goals - Raul's volley and Sunday Oliseh's strike.

One of the most memorable moments of my childhood
Best opening game of any tournament ever.....

It marked Africa's blossoming as a continent with serious teams who could beat the established old guard.

In those days none of the players were know to the viewing public (no one watched French football then), and they were just sensational.  They were hideously naive too, which was I suppose part of the charm for the neutral, but what a joy they were to watch......

Some of their tackles though!!!  Canniggia got taken out by an outrageous lunge... Brilliant brilliant stuff though...

Johnny Rep's goal in that game was a belter as well, which always gets forgotten. Dalglish's wasn't too shabby either.

It'll be hard to beat Carlos Alberto's goal in the 1970 final for me.
