So, I've been given around $1.4k to spend on a watch. Been with my company for 5 years and they give this as a loyalty bonus. I've never spent more than 100 on a watch before so I'm a bit lost :-\

I tend to go for quite classic watches with a clean face. Does anyone with more knowledge than me think that the below would be good choices? I like the Longines one more but not sure if it's worth paying extra for. Or are there other brands I should be looking at?

I have some Christopher Ward watches, really well made and can highly recommend them.
The Trident's are really nice.

Oris is great value for money. They have several different collections. I really like their Artelier collection. This one is a beauty imo:

https://www.oris.ch/en/watch/oris-artelier-pointer-day-date/01-755-7742-4051-07-5-21-34fc

The price is slightly higher than $1.400,- but it’s a great buy!!

Yeh, nice that. Zeppelin are a German brand (unsurprisingly) and are considered a sort of entry brand to German watches. You'll often see people graduating to Junghans after owning a Zeppelin if you like the styling.

The Stowa Partitio is the German model in my collection. Every so often I think about moving it on for a Junghans Max Bill though.

What's your vibe Liam? Classical, modern? Metal straps, leather straps?

Sorry should of been a bit more specific

something like this? http://www.asos.com/nixon/nixon-a1208-ascender-bracelet-watch-in-silver/prd/8713687?clr=silver&SearchQuery=&cid=5034&gridcolumn=3&gridrow=5&gridsize=4&pge=1&pgesize=72&totalstyles=60

silver watch with metal straps would look good with almost anything in my opinion :)

Russell Crower is flogging this genuine 1945 Omega for $1.5-2.5k (AUD). It was a gift to him from Meg Ryan.

People still wear watches, then?
A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

A rare Rolex watch originally bought for £69 could fetch £120,000 when it is auctioned off next month.

The Rolex Submariner 5513, purchased from a jewellery shop in Doncaster, is one of the few with a dial showing only the numbers three, six and nine.

These Explorer dials were normally replaced with a standard no number dial when they were serviced.

Auctioneer David Hare said: "What makes this watch particularly desirable is its condition."

"Because of their value, counterfeiters do attempt to fake these watches," he added.

"It's a stroke of luck that the owner of this watch never had it serviced.

"If he had, Rolex may have replaced the three-six-nine dial and the value of his watch would have dropped from over £100,000 to around £5,000."

The watch's value is also due to its provenance as it comes with its receipt and has been owned only by the person who bought it in 1966.

"It's very unclear how many still exist. I suspect there are owners out there who don't realise the significance of the Explorer three-six-nine dial," added Mr Hare.

Rolex designed its Submariner watch for use by recreational and professional divers.

The watch will be sold on 23 May along with more than 500 other lots at Gardiner Houlgate auctioneers in Corsham, Wiltshire.

Other watches being sold are a rare James Bond Rolex Submariner, with an estimated value of £12,000 to £18,000, and a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona estimated at £15,000 to £20,000.

Strange article that. Kind of reads like it was bought recently for £69 in Doncaster.

Lovely watch though.

I thought that but was bought in 1969 - quite pricey back then I’d think

I'm with you to be honest, although that particular Breitling is a bit "footballer" for my taste. Think classic. I like the look of the Panerais, but if I had four grand to spend and I didn't have a Navitimer 806, Speedmaster moon watch or a Submariner, I'd be splashing the cash in that direction. Datejusts and Air Kings fall into the same category - there will always be a market for them and they are never going to go in and out of fashion. I think that's important when spending a lot of money.

Footballer, I don't see it. Just love the look and colour. And, that's a fine collection you have there, very fine. Pretty much all the watches anyone would be lucky to have in a collection.

Me, if I had the funds and I didn't have to drop over 100k on colleges for the kids, pretty much what I'd pick, maybe switch the sub for a deep sea and add the IWC navy pilot watch. All understated and instant classics.  If funds were not an issue then I'd have a patek aquanaut

Me, my Navitimer and tag will have to do at them moment :)

But sir, congrats on your collection, excellent choices

Wife and kids surprised me at Christmas and had purchased a Submariner Date. Must have done something right.

So along with my late fathers vintage Omega and the above I'm a lucky guy.

My daughter had about 10 D2/D3 colleges chasing her for tennis. She has chosen and with her scholarships, still costing me a lot - but nowhere near the $65k of Baylor/SMU or TCU per year.

Still costing 6 figures and then she'll have to study more and go onto masters for with Vetinary or Kinesiology - but as a father and at the moment in a position to help - even though I'll have to work until I drop - I have to give all the help I can to help her in life

eBay regularly do promotions where you only pay £1 regardless of what the item sells for so may be worth keeping an eye out (it's normally Friday-Sunday)

There is a watch forum called 'watchuseek' where a lot of high end watches are discussed and talked about, not sure if you need a number of posts before putting one up for sale.

Lots of other forums too that have areas where you can put one up for sale.
