Made On The Mersey. - Liverpool's Film locations thread.
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:25:15 pm »

Having recently been ordered out of part of our city centre the other night, by high-viz minders, whilst part of the city centre was tuned over yet again to film crews. It occured to me how often Liverpool has, now, and in the past, been so accomodating to many and all for filming locations.

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2012/09/18/kenneth-branagh-and-keira-knightley-film-new-tom-clancy-jack-ryan-movie-in-liverpool-100252-31855676/

It certainly helps when we have so many fine period and listed buildings to choose from, whether it be Georgian terraces and town houses of the Catherine Street and Huskisson Street area, to the area's of Fenwick and Water Street that pass off as New York, to some of our older dock warehouses which have been used for a myriad of victoran tales.

It's always a nice feeling when something on TV or at the movies and you realise, and shout out to yourself, "Thats Liverpool", as the penny drops you are looking at part of the city, albeight usually dressed up to look like somewhere else.

So here's a thread to pay homage to our wonderful city, and surrounding areas, and it's film locations, be it Hollywood blockbusters, or just lowly TV adverts.

Even better if you can post a link from youtube or other video sharing sites, with the locations visible.  :wave

Oh, and this page may be of help, although it's ceratinly not complete, as I can think of numerous films that have had scenes filmed here that haven't got a mention.

I was watching Captain America: First Avenger (2011), earlier, and noticed that our very own Regent Road, Stanley Dock Warehouse, and the bascule bridge were passed off as 1940s Brooklyn.

Sorry about the poor quality pics. Taken straight from the telly.

When me and my mate saw that scene in the cinema we both pointed and cheered rather loudly.  Rest of the audience must have thought we were mad.  ;D

Rarely seen film from the 50's featuring a dreadfully posh young James Fox ....The Magnet

Some interesting views from the Overhead from 1.18 onwards (admittedly many backshot) but the bit at 3.16 isn't.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/N1Q7l4adPLU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/N1Q7l4adPLU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1</a>

Haven't seen it in years but I remember it having lots of landmarks, most now long gone, in it.

Given its setting, however, authentic local accents are absent until almost the end of the film, in a scene filmed in the shadow of the Anglican cathedral.[2] A Chinese boy appears in this scene, which was unusual for the time in film, although there had been a significant Chinese community in Liverpool since the 1860s, but when he is called home by his mother in Chinese, explains this to his friends in fluent scouse.

The Russian drapes were all over this building, anyone know what it was for?

Incidentially was also used for the Parole Officer (2001).

Always thought it was funny it was a Liverpool location used when the film is set in Manchester

It might be to do with this....
Currently being filmed in the city is Utopia, a flagship Channel 4 thriller which arrived in the city in April and will film until October.

The latest Jack Ryan has also been shot in part in Liverpool.

It's weird watching In The Name Of The Father and seeing what is meant to be 1970s London but is quite clearly Liverpool 8 - complete with Street Names clearly on display.

At 0:30, they're standing on Castle Street looking towards the Town Hall. There's even a street sign Castle Street.
The picture is the wrong way round though (like from behind), the starbucks is on the other side.

There's Mercury Court (ex exchange station) on Tithebarn Street at 0:07

It's not Liverpool, I don't think.

About 80% of that ad has a Liverpool backdrop, but there are other sites that are not in Liverpool blended in there.

Possibly for that Jack Ryder (?) film.

Also, can't believe Boys from the Blackstuff hasn't been mentioned yet.

There was a film on tele a few months ago aswell, set in Liverpool, just remember the ending had some baby driving a land rover on one of the runways at JLA that one of the characters used to always sit at. Think Andrew Schofield was in it.
EDIT: Think it's called Under the Mud.

Also a new one comingout soon set in Liverpool, Andrew Schofield and Stephen Graham star in it, called The Last Ferry which looks fantastic.

Also drove up the view point when they filmed the scene with the scallies jumping over the railing, so may have a small cameo if they use that cut! ;D
