I saw Paul Weller in this slot and he didn't play one Jam song or any big solo songs. Fucking boring of you just play 30 year old songs.
Even if that's what the fans actually want? I know Weller hate's playing he old stuff but I went to watch him at the Manchester Area in the early 2000s and hardly anyone knew his new stuff, then it started rocking when he played his old stuff, especially the Jam songs. I really appreciated it as I was quite young when they split up and was only just getting into music with The Jam becoming one of my favourite bands, but I never got the opportunity to see them live.
I think Bowie tried something along the lines of not playing his old stuff on one of his tours, Glass spider maybe? Anyway I think it was a bit of a flop. I went to watch him on his 'Sound+Vision' tour, it was supposed to be his last one and he played all his old stuff, it was fantastic. I think he did about another ten tours after that!
Compare that with the likes of the Manic Street Preachers or The Cure who seem to love playing their old stuff, maybe they appreciate that its an important part of who they are today and they are proud of it. I think they are are in tune with what their audiences want too. They are both superb live too.
