Gareth Southgate: England's substitute teacher
« on: October 2, 2016, 04:18:25 am »
The old white wine England manager is out, the new whiter than white (temporary) replacement England manager is in.

Southgate confirms his first squad this evening. A recall for Marcus Rashford will surprise no one, but the papers are also talking about Michael Keane and Jesse Lingard being brought into the fold. I like Keane and would rather have him around the squad than an aging Jagielka, however England have better attacking options than Lingard. Otherwise the big question is, does he have the balls to bench Rooney?

Jesse fucking Lingard, at least Antonio was playing well for around 9 months and was scoring a lot so warranted it, would say the likes of Albrighton or Deeney are far more deserving of a call up than that dabbing wanker

Not many managers that inspire me less than fat Sam out there, credit to the FA for nailing it. Hodgson, Sam, southgate, great time to be an England fan.
At least with Sam watching him flop would have been entertaining. Southgate does nothing for no one.

He's still Manchester United captain, from the bench.

Why turning to Southgate when there were more proven choices available like Gary Megson?

I quite like him. Admittedly this is based partly on what you've said in that he's not as offensive to the senses as the previous two England managers and he seems an intelligent sort (relatively speaking anyway). It makes sense for the FA to give him the role for the time being and he shouldn't have too many problems winning his competitive matches and if they want an Englishman, then he's the best candidate.

That being said, already reassuring Rooney the captaincy doesn't strike me as a smart thing to start with.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Glen Johnson gets his first call up in two years, Glen Johnson. Jagielka in the squad too, Southgate going for the "safe" experienced choices  over youth despite having been the U21 manager for the last three years.

To be fair the options are limited no matter how becomes head coach. How many top class youngsters are being denied a place in the squad at present? Can't think of any.

Fair point, but how many players aren't in the squad that really should be? This squad minus Rooney with Clyne and Lallana included is about the strongest you can name.

Michael Keane ahead of Jagielka, I'd have had Sam Byram ahead of Glen Johnson too but he got injured this weekend.

That just smacks of putting different players in for the sake of it though. Michael Keane is a fair call, wouldn't be against him getting a chance but Byram? He's done nothing since moving to West Ham, Bilic has even played Antonio ahead of him.

I reckon Southgate will get the job.  It will fulfill the FAs long held dream of promoting from within.

The trouble is, that you do that when you're strong and successful, not when you've just been humiliated by Iceland and the replacement manager's drinking pints of wine and talking of how he can break transfer rulings.

Of course, the FA wants a reliable, safe pair of hands.  No public outrages, no shocks.  That's why they picked Roy, that's why they ignored him being utterly shit for so many years.

They will do the same again.  A squad in need of self belief and unity will have a man with the charisma of a pencil sharperner foisted upon them.

And yet again, it will end in shit.

Nobody in the under-21's should get into the senior team anyway. Chilwell, Chambers, Chalobah, Redmond, Loftus-Cheek, Ward-Prowse, Watmore, Hughes etc. All nowhere near good enough for the senior team.

That doesn't answer the question that was posed whatsoever. Keane ahead of Jagielka, I'll give you that. But then you name an injured player. So is 1 player, a defender from Burnley, all you can come up with to back up your argument that the wrong players have been selected?

Had to laugh at Jamie Redknapp saying Rangnick would be a "boring appointment" then in the next sentence hailing Gareth Southgate as the man for the job.
