Looking at the 'total deal'
The APR on that is around what... 5 %. That's near house mortgage territory,  a decent rate all things considered.  The APR on payday loans go up to a few hundred percent,  even more in poorly regulated countries.

The cost of money there is fine,  it's what you do with it that Barca have been poor at.

Yup, given the current state of the financing market (and inflation), most underperforming businesses would snap their hands off for such terms. The deal with CVC is roughly 1-year LIBOR + 75 bps, although that assumes no growth in the value of the TV rights, which is really the play for CVC. It's still not a bad deal for a cash-strapped club.

The problem as you say is that Barca have no idea how to spend that money.

Don’t know why anyone’s surprised. They sold their soul a very long time ago, so may as well flog anything left of any tangible value.

I was on the fence about the ESL, but now want its embers stomped out once and for all if only to see Barcelona drown in debt of their own making. It’s no more than they deserve.

This is pathetic, how they’re behaving.  It can work if football revenues continue to show stellar growth, or if their debts are fixed and massive inflation erodes them, but it’s mad to bet on either of those things imo.  Possibly they’re banking on being too big to fail, but if that were the case they’d’ve been bailed/baled out last year.

Selling the family silver so they can sign players today is fucking great. 25% of their tv rights gone over 25 years is a big deal. They are really not thinking about tomorrow. It's lovely.

25% over 20 years for the amount they’ve sold it for is staggeringly bad business from Barcelona’s perspective, to the point where laymen like myself are intrigued and horrified by it. They’ve raised £227m in the immediate term and all they’ve had to give away for it is a definite £800m of confirmed revenue and between £250m - £1bn of potential revenue on top of that.

Bartomeu will probably still be seen as the worst Barca president in modern history even though Laporta is selling their future down the river.

The article I read said they had received £500m for the 25% of TV rights they'd sold (£200m for the first 10% and £300m for the next 15%).  Whatever the amount though it is, on the face of it, gross mismanagement.  It's on a par with selling utilities for a quick profit and then forever losing out on those profits (oh...).

THe mad thing is that even with that sale of the family silver they're still carrying a ridiculous debt.  Their fans need to savour any short-term glory they have as the medium and long-term both look grim.

Is it possible that they’ve looked at the overall tv deal and calculated that it’s pie-in-the-sky and likely to collapse at some point soon, so it’s actually better to cash in those potential revenues now and pass on the risk?  So this would be a hedge against a bursting bubble?

That’s one way I could see this being actually quite astute - though to be honest splurging the money immediately on players doesn’t suggest that kind of forward thinking.

You don't want to make crazy assumptions from just 90 minutes about a team but nothing today that doesn't scream to me 2nd best team in Spain. Which means they spent a shit load of money and mortgaged their future to basically be right where they ended last season. I guess we'll see.

Worse possibly

That was shit. Xavi clearly wants them to play through the lines but they haven’t got the staff. Dembele is so so bad, can’t believe we’ve been linked with him so much

Xavi suffers from possibly what Gerrard and lampard will suffer with

‘Why can’t he just do that/this’ like they could

Just unable to accept that they were exceptional players and you can’t turn someone into a Gerrard, Lampard, Xavi

Tchoumeni definitely doesnt look like a 100mil player. Looks very average. Valverde and Camavinga are top class though. It will be interesting to see how ancelotti rotates his midfield.

Ramazani looks like a very lively player who could be a great pickup for a club like southampton or brighton.

Don’t think you could ever infer how a player would look under Klopp that plays for Ancellotti. It’s pretty well documented now that Carlo does minimal tactics training and is all about just telling good players to get out there and do good things. Usually works though when your players are clearly better.

Think Madrid will win still here, Almeria after some good early play have been terrible but they are also newly promoted. Do agree though in that I’d take Valverde here in a heartbeat.

Spanish football has been essential viewing for me for the last 20 years nearly

It’s at a true low ebb now

The refereeing of play acting and diving is my number one problem with it. They are indulged like children having a tantrum in the supermarket and they do it so much it’s now reached the absolutely ridiculous

Towards the end of a game of one team have the result they want you very literally can out put in a any sort of challenge or they will hit the floor and the ref will gladly whistle for it

Completely unwatchable.

Sticking with my ranking from last year in that it's PL>Serie A>La Liga>Bundesliga as far as viewing habits.

Been awful for a few years. Serie A is a better watch, especially since the Milan teams starting challenging Juve again.

In the early 2000's you had the Valencia and Deportivo sides and Del Bosque's Real Madrid. Then you had the Ronaldinho era Barca. The Villareal of Riquelme etc, the Seville side of Alves etc and the Sociedad side that went close. Then the Barca/Real/Atletico sides of the 2010's that were dominating in Europe as well as domestically, i.e. the best in Europe at the time.

Nothing going for it anymore. Barca are a shambles and Atleti are unwatchable despite having good players. The likes of Valencia, Villareal and Sevilla don't compete beyond challenging for 4th.

Can’t be easy being a ref in Spain. Most of the game is players trying to con him.
