Martin Skrtel
« on: July 15, 2016, 07:44:46 pm »
Martin has signed for Fenerbahce for an undisclosed fee. What do you think about him?

As a LFC and FB fan who lives in Istanbul, i always admire transfers from Premier League. Almost all of the major transfers from EPL, play like a beast in Turkey.

We love Skrtel type tough guys and looking forward to see him in Fenerbahce Stadium.

He won't be remembered as fondly as some other players from that era *cough cough Agger cough cough Lucas*  because he wasn't as talented, but he was as commited and loyal as them, and if we're being honest far more important. But that's the thing with supporters isn't it? We crave for loyal and commited players but only if we think they're good enough, if not we couldn't see their backs quick enough.

Why are fees undisclosed?
As I've said before, the Full English is just the base upon which the Scots/Welsh/NI have improved upon. Sorry but the Full English is the worst of the British breakfasts.

Why are fees undisclosed?

In Turkey, sport clubs have aggreements with stock market, they don't have to announce official prices if they are below 5m €.

He seems a decent fella and I wish him all the best. Committed to the cause for years.

An absolute rock in the year under Kenny when the team played to his strengths (and mitigated his limitations). Very loyal and played his part in some great moments - his goals in that season under Rodgers when he scored 8 in a season a highlight. That said, he's fallen into the trap of the likes of Riise - left two seasons too late and his stock irreversibly damaged by a woeful few years (that second half at Southampton...). Good luck to him.

So Skrtel´s Champions League season is already over, after Fenerbahce crashed out in 3rd Preliminary round against Monaco, after their 1-3 loss yesterday. Ironically, none of those 3 goals were his fault, and he even assisted for Emenike´s goal.

Btw, he is played in Fenerebahce as LCB alongside Simon Kjaer.

We have won our last 5 matches in a row. Kjaer and Skrtel defence line is gelled now and they are solid as rocks. He is not a Klopp type defender but I can surely say that Martin and Simon are the best ones in Turkish league now.

Good write up about him in the Grauniad! He's a leader now  :)

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/sep/04/martin-skrtel-slovakia-england-liverpool-fenerbahce

Quote
“His solidity and aggression on the pitch were great, and, moreover, he is a leader,” Kocian says. “He was always prepared for a debate and able to be self-critical. He was not thinking: ‘I play for Liverpool and the others play for small clubs.’ In that time, due to playing in England, his status was very high but he never misused it. I could rely on him. When I visited him in Liverpool, we had a lot of things to discuss as the atmosphere in the team was tense.”

He wont be playing Sunday :)

He wont be playing Saturday either :)
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I had to double check then, get in I thought we were on Sunday for some reason! I think he'll start if fit, Pep seems to rate him and I can't see why. He's saved them 4 points this season already but my god he is shite.

For a Klopp side? Yes, a lot worse.

For a Klopp side? Yes, a lot worse.

Kocian can understand Klopp’s decision. “Klopp wanted to find a different type of defender: technical, able to pass the ball, good in the combination,” he says. “Martin’s best abilities are in challenges.

“Martin himself would not be satisfied if he was sitting on the bench. Every coach has a different concept. It is not possible to criticise Klopp when he says: ‘Let’s find another club.’ It is a natural thing in football and every coach wants to have his own players in and win.”

For a Klopp side? Yes, a lot worse.
Common misconception I feel, largely based on a horror show performance after coming back from injury against Southampton where he gave every ball away under the sun and we ended up losing from a winning position. He has left and we feel no safer in defence, in fact more panic and nerves setting in. He was underrated on the ball, had good passing accuracy and decent switches of play on him. Easily physically more dominant than Klavan, especially in the air and looks faster than Klavan to me. People like to trot out this can't play in a high-line stuff but he actually played in a high-line under Klopp and looked solid in a number of games, but same as the others could get exposed occasionally. He left because he wanted first choice, but if he was 1st backup of course you'd have him here instead of Klavan - who seemingly makes a big mistake every game or part of a smaller mistake leading to goal. Even if Skrtel were to do that and was playing at the same level, he would by default provide better defence from aerial balls and give you a bit more on attacking corners which would help break teams down when we get 10+ corners a game vs low block teams and do nothing like currently.
