^ from the navy thread

I know the old Arc Royal was up in 1970 - but can't recall the U.S one. I'll have to ask my arl fella later.

He has a great story from WW2, when he was an urchin in town, and a captured U-boat was pulled into the Princess dock where the Crown Plaza is now. It was being manned by a skeleton crew of Royal Navy matlows but it didn't stop all the kids booing and bricking them as they were mooring  ;D

I was an apprentice for a bit with the City Engineers and that's where I had my tests and interview

Not seen this before..

They are some great pictures. Still blows my mind how all these shoeless kids used to get around in winter. Mustīve been tough.

Aye that foto is captivating..had me doing a bit of research & found this which mentions Henochsberg and Ellis.

"The football ground was reached without accident, though a wheel parted company with one of the brakes in Manchester-street, rendering a hasty alight necessary."

I only stuck it for 3 months, went to try and be a mechanic and ended up as a painter with the City Engineers. Cannot for the life of me remember where the depot was, its was somewhere in town, I ended up painting lampposts and street fixtures in Norris Green and going to Picton College, which was absolutely shite. I was supposed to start learning how to make the big road signs, but jacked it in like a dickhead.

If you'd have got a job as a mechanic it would have been in Breckside Park depot in Anfield, but it sounds like you started in Kent Street depot which was off Duke Street.

You absolute star, it was Kent Street :thumbup

I couldn't get Seel Street out of my head, I can remember all the different bits of Norris Green we worked it, but I can barely remember going to the Depot as I only went in 3 or 4 times, but I could remember getting off at Central and walking in that direction.

Don't remember going in the Futurist much as a kid, it was always the ABC or the Odeon.

Glad you posted that pic with the trainee prices, I was trying to find out how much Bamba and Samba were, a tenner in 79 will have been expensive I think?

Nice pic's, Rob.

I spent a few afternoons in The Futurist. Also remember Eros on London Road, although I never went in.

Got loads of stuff from Greenberg's back in the day.

I see Les Dennis was on at the She Club in those ads.  :)

When I worked at Liverpool Council in the a early 1970s we had to go to Kent Street stores, with a chit, to get petrol in the Office Council green office van.

I think Kent Street was also where kids could go to get school uniforms.

Had a look at google earth re that middle picture in Walton , I’m pretty sure it’s not the freeman hardy Willis building that’s still existing on county road / carisbrooke road corner

The picture shows the sign for carisbrooke on the right and on the left of the picture the road bends to the left which looks like Westminster road to me .

A look on google earth Shows a wide circular pavement on the corner of carisbrooke and Westminster road which looks like the footprint of this building , think the continuation of it would have been the little cafe that was there during my school years “ the spellow cafe “ think it was called

Aye mate spot on.
Never seen that building before & was too quick to think it was the old FHW shop. That's looking down Barlows lane from that angle which runs into Westminster road, there was a church on Barlows lane where one of me brothers was married..can't recall the name, will have todo some digging for that..
The Spellow Cafe..that brought back a few vague memories too, wasn't that called Sylvia's Cafe (or known as that) at one time too? I think there was a taxi repair garage in a small cul de sac Street near there too.

Yeah there was a big purchasing stores in Kent St back in the day. Had Police uniforms also.

Definitely went to Breckside Park for petrol, probably Kent Street for dust coats and Toe Tectors.

We drove Council Green Commer vans for the Weights and Measures Department in Great Crosshall Street. I gained most of my driving experience driving throughout Liverpool carrying half a ton of 56 pound weights, petrol measures or, the big skive, taking beer glasses which had failed accuracy tests to the tip at Otterspool. Quick trip to the tip and then a kick about on the prom.
