so its nearly a year we rid them

god almighty. that time will never be forgotten. being a lfc fan your a part time, coach, player and alcoholic. you think you know it all

for that time we were also part time accountants(judging administration), a solicitor (what all the court terms meant) and of course a terrorist (emails)

we actually broke the internet keeping track of the court rulings

I bet Phil Babb still remembers the Chelsea game in 1998. Just remembering the result of him trying to prevent Casaraghi's shot crossing the line is enough to make ones eyes water!!

I'll start the ball rolling for October 5th by recalling a 5 - 0 win against Fulham in 1993 in the Coca Cola Cup 2nd leg at Anfield when an 18 year old striker by the name of Robbie Fowler bagged all 5. He went back into the dressing room feeling pretty chuffed with life only for Ronnie Moran to put him down with "you should have scored 7!!!" Went on to be a pretty decent player for us over the next 8 years though. And had an 18 month cameo under Benitez towards the end of his playing days.

Another stand out October 5th game was a Sunday afternoon game in 1997 when Patrick Berger scored a hat-trick as we beat Chelsea 4 - 2. Having scored twice on his home debut against them the previous season, Berger was developing a nice habit of scoring against Chelsea. Sadly, I don't think he scored against them after that for us.

Can we play on October 5th every year – outstanding record on this day!

Fowler’s 5, how good was that?1 Can just remember on the radio they kept going over for the goals, think it was Peter Slater on 5 Live “young Robbie Fowler has scored”, “Fowler again” etc etc. Just remember them saying, there’s been another goal at Anfield, it wouldn’t have anything to do with a certain Robbie Fowler would it? “Yes, he now has five”. Brilliant!

That Chelsea game was quality too. Berger’s hat-trick was superb, a brilliant lob for the first when there were a load of easier options available to him. Think Robbie got the other? We were great that day though although think they had someone shit (Lambourde?) sent off early.

The City comeback was brilliant as well. At two down I can remember thinking, ah well we’ve had a decent start to the season, we have to lose sometime. Then the stirring comeback topped off with last minute winner – the first of many great comebacks and late winners that season. Think Wigan at home was the following week when we came from 2-1 down to win. Pompey away was probably the pick of the bunch that season though.

And a really random one but in that 4-1 win at Burnley, Redknapp scored a really classy goal where he rounded the keeper by rolling his studs over the ball. You see it loads now but back then it seemed like an outrageous piece of skill.

Memories from today, watching Robbie bang in those five was sweet.  Then Ronnie Moran meeting him as he came off the pitch with the match ball to tell him he should have had seven or eight!

Went to that game at Turf Moor, now that is one shithole of a place.  My main memory is of a really deft goal from Redknapp where he took the ball around the keeper by rolling the ball along under his foot rather like the turn that Zidane does but without the full spin. It was a classy finish. Sticks in my memory because we were playing our usual parks game the following Sunday morning and my cheeky brother went and copied the move and scored in the same way. 

That Man City game was a weird one.  Never went and was out on a long bike ride instead.  I remember us going 2-0 down and wasn't really that fussed when I lost radio reception. Couldn't quite believe it 40 mins later when I cycled out of the other end of the valley and heard Torres equalise.  I was glued to the radio after that.

Nope I repeated the trick myself too...with some sort of stuffed, soft indoor ball and slotted 'into' the radiator in my brother's bedroom that was acting as the goal! To be honest, I deserved a bigger stage to act it out on! Was a great finish though wasn't it (Redknapp's not mine!).

I was having this conversation recently with a Manc who surprisingly agreed with me. But imagine if there was the level of hype around young footballers then as there is now. If that was in the modern age he’d have been touted round all Europe’s top clubs by the January transfer window and we might have struggled to keep him. Think how easy it is for a young player these days to be ‘the next big thing’ based on relatively little achievements. At 17/18 Fowler scored roughly 20 goals in his debut season and then followed it up with over 30 in the next 3 seasons I think. That’s incredible, it pisses on anything Rooney did at a similar age.

What an amazing talent he was. He’ll always be remembered fondly, loved even by us but in the wider footballing world he’ll probably be forgotten. It’s better to burn out than to fade away I guess.

The City come back a few years ago, I had to make to with radio updates as I was on a long drive. We went one nil down… then the coverage went away for a while, so I was getting really tense. The anchor says something along the line of ‘there’s been another goal at Eastlands. Is it game on?’ The commentator then takes over and says ‘its game on alright…. At least it has to be for Liverpool if they are going to get something out of this game, as they are now 2 down….’ I don’t know how I didn’t crash the car. Will never forget it, what a way to get my hopes up only to crush them! And what a ludicrous way to phrase it! Made the eventual victory all the sweeter though.

That’s so true and it’s funny how we all remember our own little things.

I hate listening on the radio when we’re not the commentary game though. You spend all game waiting for them to say “a goal at Anfield” and then have those few seconds of desperation trying to pick out clues from the crowd noise etc before being put out of your misery. Then if we are leading you spend the remainder of the game panicking about being told there’s news of another goal. If the other team have it then you’re back to square one. If we have it you can relax briefly until like Wolves the other week they pull one back you shit yourself all over again. I don’t think that feeling during match time will ever leave us. That horrible feeling of being desperate to know what’s happening but also strangely just wanting it to be over and to know the final score.

I was a wedding last weekend with a 1.30pm start. As the wedding started I knew Rodwell was off but that was it. I also knew that by the time I surfaced and switched the phone back on the game would be over. It was strangely liberating to know I couldn’t check my phone every 30 seconds, just had to sit there and wait, optimistic because they were down to 10 but not wanting to get ahead of myself. At least I looked extra happy in all the photos outside the church anyway!

I remember having completely the opposite thought Nick (remember it because I'm usually a pessimist by nature when it comes to football, so it was a strange thought to have!)...said to my mate "this year feels different...we can come back from this"...and for once I was right. Just mentioning it because there was real belief that we could drag those type of games back that season. Hopefully we're steadily getting back on that track.

On this day last year I remember watching the Dear Mr Hicks video at tea time then watching the news at ten where they showed the protest before the Blackpool game 2 days before. Later on that night a statement on .tv saying that G & H had tried removing and replacing Ian Ayre & Christian Purslow from the board and Dan Roan on 5 Live broke he news that NESV were interested in buying us.

Loved Fowler. There were no heirs and graces about him, he just accepted himself for what he was. Some of his goals were spectacular. The one against Villa where he turned Staunton then let fly from 30 yards was one of the best goals I've ever seen.

October 6th will produce one of the most forgettable games I've been to, an absolutely dire 0 - 0 draw against West Brom in 1984. A goalless draw at Old Trafford in 1991 saw Rob Jones make his debut as a 19 year old 2 days after signing from Crewe. He didn't put a foot wrong, and would have got man of the match had Ian St John not had a rule where Bryan Robson was always mom whenever Mancs were the ITV live game.

  Memory of that game, we had drawn 4-4 in the first leg and talk of a cup upset was swirling around the pubs in the town famous only for not being able to build a church straight.  In the event we cruised to a comfortable lead in the first half and the travelling Kop took the piss for the second half.  There were big hoardings along the roofs of the stands I seem to remember all exhorting the values of people or companies we'd never heard of.  The one that sticks in my head was Henry Boot (google now tells me: http://www.cdrex.com/henry-boot-chesterfield-limited-2285427.html).  I think there may also have been a Charles Lamb (followed quickly by "Sheepshaggas na-na-na" obviously).  It was one of those fun occasions you used to get on the old terraces where the footy was now just a diversion and it was essentially just one big piss take, like being down the pub with 2000 of your mates.

remember the manc game. was shitting it cos it was just when ferguson was really starting to improve there. they were 6 points clear in the league and we were midtable. souness dropped Grobellaar for mike hooper and hooper had a great game, one great save in particular from bryan robson

jones was immense against Giggs. giggs that season was like messi then all of a sudden this kid, a 4th division player just 2 DAYS earlier comes in and matches him every step of the way.

was really shitting it when Gary Ablett got sent off for two bookable offences. United still struggled to break us down then there was a bit of a tussle with Mark Hughes and David Burrows at left back. The camera didnt catch it but Ian St John reckoned Hughes spat at Burrows right under the linesmans nose, or there was talk as they were on the ground that Hughes punched him.

so he was sent off too, the way he didnt even contest it meant he obviously knew.

Think he actually came off at half time though. Hughes and Burrows both sent off I think, a Manc mate maintains that Burrows was crying when Hughes squared up/nutted him...I'm sure it was just dastardly play acting.

That Chelsea game was a shocker livened up by a last minute winner that kept us top. In reality it was just masking deficincies which came crashing down a couple of months later.

I remember going to the awful League Cup defeat at Swindon on this day forty-one years ago.

We bumped into Larry Lloyd in the car-park after the match. He was waiting for some of his relatives from Bristol who had travelled the short distance to Swindon to watch him play. It was only Larry's twenty-fourth first-team appearance for Liverpool. He said that Bill Shankly was absolutely furious in the dressing-room after the game. Even though a relatively inexperienced team was picked (including Doug Livermore and Jack Whitham), it should have been good enough to see off Second Division opposition. To be fair to Swindon, they were worthy winners on the night with Don Rogers (who had destroyed Arsenal in the 1969 final of the same competition) scoring twice in the second half.

I seem to remember that Ray Houghton's goal came courtesy of a phenomenal pass by Peter Beardsley. Beardsley got the ball by the halfway line near the dugouts but was actually facing towards the Main Stand at that point. Either he had eyes in the back of his head or he had seen the opportunity several seconds before anyone else. He swivelled and in the same instant passed the ball into Houghton's path, Houghton being completely unmarked in the inside-right position. I remember people near me muttering "How the Hell did he see that?".
