'Quiet Genius - Bob Paisley, British Football's greatest manager' is on sale from today. It's published by Bloomsbury and written by Ian Herbert.

I just ordered my copy on Amazon. Really looking forward to reading an account of my hero's life by one of a very few sports journalists I have time for. There are some short extracts in today's iPaper, and probably in the Indy too.

Thanks for the heads up.

Excerpt from the Independent:

Paisley’s nickname was ‘the Rat’ and though that had initially been in recognition of his role serving with Montgomery’s Desert Rats, many of the players had a more literal and unheroic application of the term. In the early stages of research for my biography of Paisley, which is published on Thursday, word came back from those who know Liverpool inside out that some people didn’t care much for Bob Paisley. Not all would want to talk. Those were prescient words.

Looks like there will be new stuff here.

The boot-room and manager weren't there to pamper to the players they were there to get the best out of them for Liverpool . Back room staff have been hated and mistrusted over the years , Paisley , Moran and Phil Thompson to name a few . Remember Paisley being court after attacking a cobbler in his shop in the next street to ours in anfield . If you read some of the old player biographies most don't have good things to say about the management team while they were players .

To be fair, it wouldn't surprise me if a few people didn't want to talk about him. Behind the quiet, introverted exterior, was someone who would ruthlessly sell players he knew from his experience were on the wane. That would probably rub some individuals the wrong way, but led to continual success.

I'd go with that. Liverpool were ruthless back then. You were up to the job or you were out. Simple.
You came in to do a job. While you did it well, you were in. When you were on the way down, you were out. That's how we stayed hungry and at the top of the tree for so long. There was much romance about Liverpool FC, but very little sentimentality within it. LFC was all about winners. Luxury passengers were not tolerated much. You can bet your life many egos were bruised back then, and the guys who did the bruising might not have always been liked, but the club as a whole was all the better for it.

I wonder if Waterstones will stock this? If so I'll have a flick through it next week.  :)

Just finished reading this book, a very interesting read that doesn't seek to only paint him in a positive light while still highlighting all his many strengths as a manager.

I would highly recommend it to any Liverpool fan who is seeking a football book to read this summer.
