He was very vocal too, which is good. Not sure if Joe is that vocal? Not noticed he is so much. So it’s good to have as many vocal defenders out there as we can without Virgil.

What a performance in tough conditions against a difficult opponent. He has a bit of physicality to deal with these games. Well done!

Very good performance and I think a good confidence boost if we need him for more games.
One shaky moment when ball rebounded harmlessly of the West Ham player. Strong assertive heading (though helped by the fact that Haller was a little passive)

Might not be a good enough footballer for our side but he more than made up for that today by playing with his heart. Our best defensive defender on the pitch today.

Well in lad! Old school meat and potatoes defender. Win the ball in the air, win the individual battle, lay the ball off to the lads who can play football or boot it away when pressed.

Spot on. Head it, 5 yard pass or boot it 60 yards up the pitch. Against some teams that's all you need.

Did really well today. But the opposition suited him too. Last year he won most headers in his German division. So aerially he is dominant. Antonio being absent benefited us to be honest. For games where the opposition has lots of balls into the box, he is a really good option. Can steady the ship till Fabinho and Matip return.

He did really well for a debut. The only thing he’s missing is experience.

Joe is vocal too if you watch him you could see him talking to Nat and helping him with his positioning. The lad did well, not as natural on the ball as Joe but some great heading from him.

Did really well. We’ve some really good young defenders and they may well not end up making it here but they should all go on and have top careers.

Amazing that Gomez was the younger of the two though  ;D

Exactly. And Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin played that day. That boy has a part to play in this team. If Jamie Carragher can play for Liverpool, why not Nat Phillips 😃

Excellent in the air and solid throughout. Still feel he could struggle against quicker opponents, but definitely a good option against the more direct physical sides.

Robbo was our best defender today with crucial blocks and interceptions, but yes, I get your overall point.

I love these sort of out and out defenders, probably because I was a bit of clogger myself.  He's strong, good in the air and brave.  He isn't going to rake a 40 yard pass and he isn't going to outsprint a forward, but he'll battle for every ball, give 100% and is really good in the air.

That's two young defenders that can do a job, not including Billy The Kid.

Focused on the basics very well.

Spent the time clearing lines and getting rid when needed.

Played his way into it as time went on.

Still wouldn't play him against city but easily against any team in the bottom half.

Nat Phillips.

Honesty the past few preseasons and in some of the cup games I've always thought he looked like our best youngest CB. However he's not classed as one of our youngest as he is a little older.

Anyway, I remember one rare preseason game I got to go watch it live and I thought, yeah this kid has got it. Looks so solid and dominant.

I've never ever thought of him as an option because Jurgen has either loaned him or tried to sell him so assumed Jurgen didn't think he had what it took to make it here.

Skip to the end. I'm buzzing he had that game.

It's not their technicality but their pressing ability that concerns me when thinking about Phillips playing against them.

Early on, he had the ball and was expecting him to just shift it on, instead, head up, and fizzed one inside. Looks like a really competent player. No matter what happens, he's done his bit for our season. Hopefully more.
