Fields of Anfield Road
« on: October 8, 2012, 03:47:43 pm »
Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling :
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.

Chorus :
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away..
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it’s glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could he play)
We had Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away
But you led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the Redmen they are they’re still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could he play)
We had Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Besides the Hillsborough Flame
I heard a Kopite calling
Why so many taken on that day
Justice has never been done
But their memories still carry on
There’ll be glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched King Kenny play (and could he play)
Stevie Highway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
About the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched King Kenny play (and could he play)
Stevie Highway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
About the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

The glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Most of your other corrections are pretty much how I learned it, but I don't think I've ever heard this verse before. Is it really something that gets sung?

"Stevie Heighway on the wing" is a pet-hate of mine.

I and many others sing "We had" as I'm 99% sure that when it was first sung those were the words. 'Stevie' seems to be a more modern and recent adaptation.

I believe SP's lyrics to be correct.

Not my lyrics, I merely extracted them from the old archive and put them on this board...

Well there you go then! I just meant 'SP's' as in 'the ones SP has posted'. Whoever wrote them down however long ago, I feel they are the original words.

"We had Heighway on the wing,

Is correct.  It's just not what gets sung at the ground, it's a shame too as the correct words are actually better.  Just one of those things, I can't see it ever getting fixed, and it's still a boss song.
Luis Garcia... tries his luck........

The only bit at a game that ges sung is this:

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched King Kenny play (and could he play)
Stevie Highway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
About the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

(repeat)

The only time the other verses get sung is before the game when it gets played over the speakers at which the whole song is played and whoever wants to sing along does

I agree with others who have said it should be 'we had highway on the wing' and not 'stevie'.

In general you're right, but all the same I'm sure I've heard at least the "outside the shankly gates..." verse on the kop, and I've heard both that and the Paisley verse in The Albert. Just never heard this "Besides the Hillsborough flame" verse, and I'm curious about the source.

We sang it in the pub at the away game at West Brom in the c/c. It very rarely gets an airing though. It is part of the 'song'- dont know who sings it but it gets played every home game before the match starts

The third verse gets sung every time I go to The Park before the game.

Every single verse got belted out by our end at Wembley, post League Cup final 2012. Not only that but it was also slowed down to a nice pace. It was an undoubted highlight of that day, for me.

The full song should be heard much more than it is, that's for sure.

You are right, it a and it was awesome. Most songs that we sing, if sang slower, would be better. I agree the song should heard more.

By far my favourite song though. The power and passion it generates after a big goal is incredible.

The biggest problem anywhere in the world is that people's perceptions of reality are filtered through the screening mesh of what they want, and do not want, to be true.

I wish we could get all the verses of this out and not just a load of people repeating the chorus over and over.

As I have said elsewhere on this forum, the problem is that to many people want to sing the song too fast, like it is a desperate race to finish.    Now I am not advocating something along the lines of "Oh when the Spurs go marching..." but if we slow it down slightly there is a better chance of getting the other verses in.   We can manage it with YNWA so other songs are manageable as well.
