I used to see him a few times a week,an old gaffer I worked for waay back lived opposite him in sandfield park-got to the stage where he'd overtake me in the Co van beeping.
Felt boss to be honest.
He had a personalised plate on his car at the time ROO 1 for obvious reasons.
Moved back to oz to care for his sister Faye.
He designed the prototype predator boots for adidas too.
Would be great to see him around the club again.

my mate lived two doors away and used to look after Craigs dogs when he went to look after his sister. Did your gaffer own a plant hire firm? Craig would always have a little kick about with us.

Yep,think it was a dark red colour if I'm right?

I think the plant hire boss was the opposite side of the cul-de-sac.

Dark red/maroon. My mate was down by Craig's. Grobbelaar came once and our bluenose mate (15 at the time) called him a clown so the dodgy one chinned him. Shit himself when the lads dad and brothers came hunting him down.

I was born in 1989, so I don't know Johnston the player too well. I have such great admiration for him as a person though.

There's some footage of him talking after England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 online. He was being interviewed on Sky News and went into the technical deficiencies of English football compared with other countries and how the FA is woefully structured from top to bottom. Johnston may as well have been talking to a wall though, the journalist clearly had no idea about football.

I also remember seeing a short piece he did during the World Cup in 2010. He was a guest on the BBC's coverage and he spoke about the Adidas ball they were using for the tournament. He had it in his hands and was giving a really interesting insight as to what was happening when players kicked it and why. Then Shearer took the ball, made a joke and threw it across the studio. It was the punditry equivalent of the point he was making about foreign players being more capable than English ones.

There's two great interviews with him as well. One was on (wait for it) Talksport with (wait for it) Andy Gray and Richard Keys. The other was on LFCTV. In both he speaks at length about his childhood, his beginnings in football, his time at Liverpool and his family life. I won't give anything away in case you don't know Johnston's story and would prefer to hear it from him instead. I'll just say that it's fascinating to hear and had me close to tears in parts.

He's sort of become a favourite of mine even though he had left the club before I was even born. One moment from the LFCTV interview stands out in my mind. I think he was asked how he would like to be remembered by supporters and then tells a story about walking to the studio that day and meeting a fan. At this point he has tears in his eyes, and he says the fan simply said something nice to him. That a small gesture could have such a profound impact says a lot about Johnston. In an era in which we all occasionally feel somewhat detached from the players, I love that it clearly meant and still means so much to him. He's a legend.

I last saw Craig Johnson in the flesh, in April 1989.   It was a couple of days after Hillsborough, and I was on the Kop, tying my scarf to one of the crash barriers.
I felt someone by the side of my, on my right and turned to see who it was, as you do.   It was Craig, just stood there looking at me, the sadness in his face.
He was there with about four or five of his relatives, who'd all just flown straight over from Australia.

No fanfare, no camera's, no publicity.   Just stood there, on the Kop, with his family, mingling with the fans. Looking as shell shocked as the rest of us.

Sad that he ended his career early, but very honourable to do so for his sister.

Post football, he's had his hand in some very lucrative business initiatives, as well.

Craig was always my favourite player when I was growing up. I'm not sure whether it was his enthusiasm or just the fact he was a bit unusual -being an aussie footballer- that marked him out for me . I've heard him a few times on the radio, talking of Lpool, his career(s) after football and its always a great listen- it really comes across what a great fella he is. I haven't listened to the Talksport clip yet but I hope it includes the tale he's told before to Hawksbee and Jacobs about being in the tunnel in Rome in 84 and the Chris Rea song 'I don't know what it is but I love it', lovely story.

Also, one of his best, most effacing, quotes regarding Lpool- how he 'was the worst player in the best team in the world'. I'll certainly be looking up his interview with Danny Kelly on 'My Sporting Life' too. Cracking show that. Danny Kelly's wasted on that station.

Top man and great story. Didn't realise he went homeless after things didn't work out with his patents and inventions with big corps like Adidas and FIFA dicking him but nice now he can share his story and legacy more. Looking forward to his future documentary.

Really enjoyed reading that.

Reminded me of something that Kenny Dalglish said about him in his autobiography in terms of him being one of the most amazing and multi talented people he'd ever met. When Kenny was the team manager, Craig installed a sophisticated satellite TV system at his house in Southport. It allowed him to watch and study live matches from almost any league game in Europe. Now considering this is probably five years before the likes of Sky Tv even existed and he didn't have a technical background, it is a remarkable achivement.

The way he gave up his career to look after his sister at the peak of his powers is awe-inspiring.

Just came to post that, not sure why but I always get a bit emotional when reading about or listening to Craig talk,he's an inspiration to any young lad who gets a knock back.

Jack Charlton really was a prick though wasn't he.

In fairness to Big Jack I think Craig admitted himself he wasn't very good. If anything the desire to prove Charlton wrong was what drove him to become the player we came to know and love. Credit to Craig himself though. He had the backbone to make it. Most don't. His decision to quit the game to look after his sister was fantastic especially when you consider how hard to worked to make it and he was only 28.
