Elland Road for me. I went in the 02/03 season,
Elland Road in the 1970's wasn't much fun but the single scariest experience I had was at Old Trafford for the derby in 1974 when they were down if we beat them. It was bad enough throughout the game but Denis Law scored for us late in the game and all hell broke loose. The police advised us to get out sharpish otherwise they couldn't guarantee our safety. They got us onto the platform at the station by the ground and held off the baying horde of United fans till the train had got away. I really thought we were going to be killed that day and I haven't been back to see City play there since.

Scariest, hariest game ive ever been to was the Quarter final against Spurs at White Hart Lane, 1980...absolute fuckin nightmare running the gauntlet of The Seven Sisters road post-match.....Spurs were the only cockney team left in the cup so every fuckin loon in London turned up to give the Scousers a little bit o' knuckle - lads getting launched through shop windows ...police motorcycle's and riders getting volleyed and careering into our escort -scattering lads into the fuckin air......bonehead British Movement apes with machetes tucked in their Donkey Jackets....bottles and bricks raining down on you from the multi-storeys that lined the road....got back to Euston and it was like Rourke's fuckin Drift...dont think anyone escaped unscathed

You know you'd do it all again.

That was another "Warriors" day out in London. This is going to sound wrong but I loved going the match then it was much more fun than it is now.

That day reminded me of the night we played Arsenal in the first leg of the League Cup semi at Anfield and there was lad's from most London clubs at the game. The left hand side of the Rd End where we stood was full of cockneys and we got battered and Blackbeard was taunting us saying"where's the famous barmy army now"? I hated that twat. ;D

There were running battles from Anfield to the city centre for hours after that match. Was a good night.

Had to change at the Embankment then Mile End and then you're at Upton Park and you have that walk to the ground. It got progressively harder with each change and by the time you got to Upton Park tube station it really was survival you were fighting for.

Had a similar experience when playing WHU in the cup, adrenaline pumping like a steam train. Safety in numbers but still that feeling of what if.

Worst one for me was Swansea as we made the mistake of being in a group of 4 and turned down the wrong street into a mob of 20+ folk that wanted to say hello.

Went with my dad to watch Hereford play Cardiff at Ninian Park back in the old forth division, think I was 10 or 11. That's was interesting, had never been in a bus being pelted with stones and bricks before.

Having been to many aways in Europe and at home throughout the bad old days, worst by a long distance was Athens 2007.

Totally agree, the behaviour of our fans was disgusting that evening, especially after how good Istanbul was 2 years earlier. Juve away was pretty scary as well, even away from the ground in the afternoon the atmosphere was pretty scary. When we be beat Inter in the San Siro I thought thered be trouble but to be fair, their fans were pretty good

As for stadium I wasn't intimidated by many except the ground of Trabzonspor, those guys are some fanatic thugs, threw coins and bottles to our side (Fenerbahce) all day long in 1998 and took us several hours to leave the stadium. Not to mention they broke the bus glasses by throwing rocks on our way to the airport.

But out of stadium, football related,a Beşiktaş fan has tried to stab me after the match that ended 1-1.Turns out he was following me after leaving the stadium and asked questions (pretending to be fenerbahce fan),then I noticed he was covering Beşiktaş scarf with his coat so I was ready for his move,he made the move,I got his wrist and pushed him to the ground and kicked a few times, ran away and grabbed a cab.

Roma vs Lazio Derby, the match was suspended at half time. My throat and eyes were killing me from the CS gas spray, and from the smoke fumes of a car that was set on fire just outside the stadium. Was on vacation and me and the girls wanted to experience a Derby in Italy.

I think we would have got hurt if we wasn't female, but we were bang in the center of a riot. It is humorous now looking back at it, but not at the time.

Back in the early 90s Old Trafford was a bit of a nightmare getting in and out. I wasn't coming from the train station or on a coach but instead getting the bus from Oldham. Scary times. Maine Road was the only time I ever got a personal death threat when I was acting a bit dickish near the segregation fence, I was genuinely scared to leave the ground.

The worst though has to be Eland Road. When I couldn't afford to go and watch Liverpool (Thatcher's Britain and all that) I would go and watch Latics with my mates. Fighting all the way through the game, running battles outside the ground and the psychotic local cops wading in at any given opportunity. Actually got chased down the M62 by a van full of nutters, only lost them when we came off somewhere near Toddmorden and dived through two sets of red lights.

Stoke. Though to be fair that had nothing to do with the ground, and everything to do with being chased by 30 fellas through stoke city centre.

I remember one year a lad told me had to give up his trainees to save getting twatted in a pub on Green St,give the lad his due he still went the game in his socks and robbed a pair of shoes on the way back.

We stood out because we got washed and wore nice clothes not workies djs and boots. ;D

Whu's crew was tight and organised and if you went you' were taking your life in your own hands, more so than any other ground I went to.

That song Everton sing, 14 to West Ham is based in fact,BR cancelled the special because no one wanted to go there, and there wasn't that many on the Bright And Early either and London was the best graft,we made shitloads of money every time we went there.

I remember some kids 14/15 going there for their first away game and be so scared they went down the players tunnel to get away and still got attacked. ;D

That said some of the shit we pulled at Liverpool is the reason fans from clubs who are my age hated coming. The first time I saw a Stanley was with us in Europe and then around the city,it was a just matter of time before they got used as weapons instead of shoplifting tools.

Yes the special got cancelled for West Ham away, Everton got battered down there just before we played them. The 1978 semi final against Arsenal was a mad night with Arsenal getting legged all over before and after the match.

WHU was a fun day out - or night.. in the ground you'd just feel it was gonna kick off then see the surge down the chicken run towards us.
I went when we got knocked out of the league cup - just done my knee in so I got a ticket in with home fans in the seats... only to watch us get twatted - fucking ince.  as the nice lads around me in the seats regressed to their usual bone headed Neanderthal ways with each goal I got moodier - and quieter - I think the not celebrating any goals may have given me away - so one of the dickheads gets right in my face shouting at me about "whats it take to make you happy then" I stood up and with what seemed like an eloquent use of very rough language (to me) shouted something about cunting fucking west ham bastards conceding another 3 goals... then realised  that I was vastly outnumber by some older vets(of fights by the look on their chubby scarred faces) who wouldn't think twice about using my head to jump on. So I decided to leg it. Leg is a good word - as I only had one functioning and after a bit of limping and hopping looked around and realized that they'd decided to stay and watch the game.. I got a few kicks on the way out but I'd seen far far worse there.. lucky to get out there.

someone mentioned Chelsea in 86 - their fans in the away end was why it was easy to get in the shed end!!! docile c*nts.

Did a Wimbledon game once and they loaded us all on the tube for an express back into central London - good move as Chelsea were at home too. as we approached fulham broadway the train slowed so everyone could give it loads to the Chelsea fans on the platform - who were giving it back and kick the doors etc. then the fucking driver stopped the train and opened the doors and the fists and boots flew.. doors quickly shut again and off we went .... when we got to the end every one got off except for this poor fucking Chelsea fan who was curled up in the corner waiting for his life to end - he must have been dragged onto the tube at fulham..

Upton Park is an odd place. Everyone who lives or works around the ground has a brown face, everyone inside the ground has a white face. I don't find it scary though.

Selhurst Park is horrid.

Stamford Bridge and Upton Park used to be intimidating in the 70s. You could just feel the home fans building up behind you as you stood waiting for the match to start.

The single scariest one for me was leaving Wembley after beating Spurs in the League Cup Final. They were lobbing bottles down from a car park and people kept running in the wrong direction as you made your way back to Wembley Park.

I never even risked Elland Road. I remember the programme notes for our game at Man City in 1980. City were playing Leeds the next week and were giving safety instructions, finishing by saying they couldn’t guarantee your safety if you didn’t follow them.

You could say that about every london ground these days.

In around 82 we played chelsea in the cup and lost 2-0 i think, was drinking in a pub on the kings road with my chelsea supporting cousins from london, next thing i know some guy playing pool walked up to us and said you three look like you've got a bit of gaelic in you, he had clocked we were irish, (our parents were from kerry) next thing i know the pool cue was being used against my head and about 3 of his mates waded in, we escaped through that door and never looked back. You could see why those grounds were all white back then with NF maniacs like that patrolling the terraces. To be attacked because your irish is unheard of these days but thsoe were the days of the IRA and all that.

Napoli, Millwalls Den, Bristol City when the game didnt start cos of floodlight failure, Old Trafford always dodgy going in and out, Roma ...Someone mentioned Norwich... We played them 3 times away in one season in the early 90's... All 3 occasions there was hassle.

EDIT... Stick Upton Park on the list... Walking past the market near the tube station after the game isnt a place to be.

Scariest: Upton Park in the late 80's. Never seen so many frothing meatheads in one place. Even the coppers looked like they wanted to get out of there.

Best: Notts County. Nice atmosphere and the Pukka Pies can't be bettered.

Nicest touch: Selhurst Park in the 90's. The loos were placed in such a way that you could carry on watching the game whilst stood at the urinal.

Elland Road in the Shankly days.

Picking me way back to station, no colours, no scarf etc. got stoned by Leeds fans, got out of that then immediately afterwards stoned by Liverpool fans.

I was in line for the unluckiest man award. If I was an entomologist and I bought a praying mantis, I swear it would have turned out to be an atheist .

By the way stoned hasn't got anything to do with taking drugs. It was like a scene out of the bible, or a Monty Python sketch.

Other than that the Boys Pen at the Spion Kop. Got robbed of everything the first time I was there.

I got leathered by some c*nts on the way back to the station when at filbert street. Berger scored a few, on his debut. Circa 1996. Also remember that day a sex shop getting raided by reds. Some interesting weapons that day. Lol.

Pretty sure I went to the same game (Peter Rhodes Brown and Mickey Droy scoring against us?), I was about 11 and we were in the seats. Also, pretty sure there was plenty of terracing 'floor' being thrown back and forth, amongst both sets of fans, going on for ages it was!

My age precludes me from having seen the worst football has to offer in terms of violence and hooliganism, so it's rare that I felt threatened at a football match.

Two games spring to mind - Went to see Liverpool play Leeds at Elland road about ten years ago (think we won 1-0?) and some of the behaviour of the Leeds fans outside the ground and in the town intimidated me, bearing in mind I was 9 at the time.

Went to see Stoke play at the Britannia against Cardiff around 00/01 or so when they were both in Division 2/League One, or the old third division. Was a Sunday game if I recall correctly, and we were seated in the Boothen end right next to the away fans, who were ripping up seats and chucking debris over at us. It didn't help that the Stoke fans then decided to respond in kind, and that the police had riled up the Cardiff support with a late escort from the station and then hording them all through one part of the ground. Then outside, there was a lot of fighting going on and the like.

I wouldn't say these were scary grounds, and the pale in comparison to some of the stories in this thread, but they remain the only times I've feared for my safety at a football match, although that possibly has as much to do with my young age during these encounters.

Ninian Park. Not because the Cardiff fans are horrendous or anything, but because the place could have fallen down while we were in there every time a goal was scored.
