Loan Watch 2017-18
« on: August 16, 2017, 05:08:32 pm »
Currently Loaned Out:

Pedro Chirivella - Willem II - Eredivisie
Connor Randall - Hearts - SPL
Taiwo Awoniyi - Royal Excel Mouscron - Belgian A
Shamal George - Carlisle - League 2 **back at club
Sheyi Ojo - Fulham - Championship
Brooks Lennon - Real Salt Lake - MLS **loan made permanent
Divock Origi - Wolfsburg - Bundesliga
Allan - Apollon Limassol - Cyprus 1. Divsion + Europa League
Ryan Kent - Freiburg - Bundesliga **back at club
Jordan Williams - Rochdale - League One **back at club
Naby Keita - RBL - Bundesliga

January Loans:

Corey Whelan - Yeovil - League 2
Matthew Virtue - Notts County - League 2
Ryan Kent - Bristol City - Championship
Marko Grujic - Cardiff - Championship
Daniel Sturridge - West Brom - Premier League
Harry Wilson - Hull - Championship
Ovie Ejaria - Sunderland - Championship
Jon Flanagan - Bolton - Championship
Markovic - Anderlecht - Pro League
Anderson Arroyo - Real Mallorca - Spanish Division 2

Early Reports:

Chirivella - Played 90 minutes as Willem II opened their season with a 2-1 home defeat to Excelsior. Worth noting that he spent the second half of last season on loan in the same league and started 17 games, scoring 2 goals. One of his partners in midfield will also be Englishman Dan Crowley, on loan from Arsenal.

Randall - A bit of a hectic start to the season for Hearts as they've sacked their manager already. It has been said that Randall would be playing in midfield for them during this loan, but maybe any new manager would have a different idea. He was an unused sub in the penalty defeat to Dunfermline in the Scottish League Cup (the result that lead to them sacking Ian Cathro), he began the 4-1 defeat to Celtic on the bench but came on for his debut in the 62nd minute, and started in central midfield as they beat Kilmarnock 1-0 in the second week of the season. He also hit the news this week for refusing to speak to any journalists from The Sun in the post match press conference!

George - Unfortunately, he'll be playing in goal rather than upfront for Carlisle! He has been on the bench for the opening 2 league games for them so far, behind fellow loanee keeper Jack Bonham (from Brentford).

Awoniyi - Scored a nice header on his debut this week for Royal Excel Mouscron, and played 90 minutes (subbed off in injury time) as they beat Lokeren 2-0 away from home. You feel this is a big season for him as he's a bit of a forgotten man here, this being his third season long loan in 3 seasons on our books. Hopefully scoring on his debut will kick him on and allow him to have a good season, he's 20 years old now so fingers crossed he'll fit the net with a bit more frequency than he did during his past 2 loans.

Ojo - The loan was only finalised today, after he had to decide between a variety of Championship clubs (Boro and Villa being 2 of them, as well as some links to Newcastle earlier in the window). Fulham themselves have opened the season with 3 draws, although all 3 have been against fellow promotion contenders. No doubt they'd have liked a win on the board by now, but they'll be happy to have 3 of their contenders out of the way and still be unbeaten. Ojo will be competing with Aluko, Kebano, and Piazon (currently injured) for a starting spot.

Lennon - This loan stretches back into last season because of the dates of the MLS season and will expire at the end of December, I believe. So far he has made 11 starts and 6 sub appearances for them, netting once and getting a further assist. He played every game for the USA U20's in the U20 World Cup this summer and got 2 goals and 3 assists as the USA made it to the quarter finals.

Talking Points:

- Which of the current loanees are you most excited about and who do you expect to make the biggest impact at their club this season?
- How will CR57's move into midfield for Hearts effect his chances of making an impact when he returns here next season?
- Will Shamal George ever get to play upfront again?
- Which other youngsters could potentially benefit from a loan move this summer?

Ojo - Was an unused sub for Fulham at the weekend when they lost at home to 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, he did however get his first game for them tonight starting in the league cup against Bristol Rovers, in another 1-0 defeat. Fulham have now scored just 3 goals in their opening 6 games of the season.
Chirivella - Played another 90 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Utrecht.
Randall - Continued in midfield and played 63 minutes as Hearts got a goalless draw away at Rangers.
Awoniyi - Another 90 minutes under his belt as his side beat Gent 3-2, also picked up an assist. Leaving him with 1 goal and 1 assist after 2 games.
George - Unused sub again.
Lennon - Managed to get another 90 minutes in a 3-1 loss.

Still waiting on a loan move for Allan, who can't play for the club because of his work permit issues.

Might try and get down to some Fulham games. Tickets are always easy to come by.

Looking at their forum, he got pretty low match ratings.

Origi now on loan at Wolfsburg for the season - Recall option included.
Allan has gone to Apollon Limassol so will get Europa League football (same group as Everton).

Perhaps this is a thread to also follow Keita? I know it's not a loan but he's a player at another club that people will want to follow.

Just looked into the teams the guys from yesterday signed for to see who they'd be competing with for playtime.

Allan - Apollon finished third in their league last season, they've started this season by knocking Aberdeen and Midtjylland out of the Europa League and qualifying for the group stages (where they'll play Everton, Lyon, and Atalanta). They've rotated with a 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 in all their Europa games so far, with Kyriakou (22 year old Cyprus international), Sachetti (31 year old Argentinian), and Alef (a fellow Brazilian, 22 on loan from Braga) rotating between the deepest midfield positions.

Origi - Wolfsburg were terrible last season and finished 16th, only remaining in the Bundesliga by winning the relegation play off. They played a 4-2-3-1 at home to Dortmund in the first game (3-0 loss) and a 5-4-1 away against Frankfurt (1-0 win). 32 year old Mario Gomez started up top in both of those games and played the full 90 minutes. Their other strikers are fellow Belgian Landry Dimata (19, new signing for Ł10m from Oostende), and Victor Osimhen (18 year old Nigerian).

Kent - Freiburg finished 7th last season and made it into the Europa Qualifying rounds but were eliminated in the third round by Domzale. They've played a 5-4-1 in both of their opening games. They've got quite a few wide players in their squad. Nierderlechner (26, German) started both games on the RW, Terrazzino (German, new Ł2m signing from Hoffenheim) started one game on the LW, and Haberer started a game on the LW (23 year old German). They also had Florian Kath (22, German) & Omar Bulut (23, Turkish), coming off the bench. They also have Kapustka in on loan from Leicester.

Perhaps this is a thread to also follow Keita? I know it's not a loan but he's a player at another club that people will want to follow.

Yeah it should be pretty fun keeping an eye on the Bundesliga this season with 3 of our players now over there.

That looks like a great loan for Allan if he can get playing time. Fulfils his European competition requirement for the work permit, in a team with a smattering of South Americans, and a coach able to successfully navigate tricky EL qualification. He may also rotate between the 6 and 8 positions which could be good for his development.

Not sure about Origi's. Would have thought he would be more in demand, but at the same time I'd say Wolfsburg underperformed last season. However, if morale is low, our Divock is not the type to really get stuck in and rally the troops. Time will tell...

Also, missed one from the earlier list.

Jordan Williams - Rochdale - Joined them until January. He's out of contract here at the end of the season so you feel this is a big loan for him. They've started the season poorly with just 2 points from 4 games after finishing 9th last season, so hopefully he gets the chance to make an impact early on. Interest fact, Rochdale already have another Jordan Williams playing for them.

He's been making a big impact in training, like, literally, manging to injure one of his team-mates! But the coaches have been impressed with him. Hopefully his time at Wolfsburg will be positive, there are no excues for them to have as bad a season again, they where horrific. But this is a team who's had regular apperances in Europe over the past decade, and who have spent a fair bit on their squad over the years. Here's to them having a better season!

Divock Origi - Wolfsburg changed formation to accomodate both him and Gomez, he started and played the full 90 minutes as they drawed 1-1 with Hannover. Also worth noting that Gomez went off injured in this game, so if they revert to their usual system with just 1 up top then it looks like Origi will continue to start for now.
Sheyi Ojo - Has an ankle injury so missed today's game and also expected to miss the midweek game. Fulham managed to end Cardiff's 100% record without him in a 1-1 draw.
Connor Randall - Another 90 mins for Randall today but in a slightly more familiar position of RWB as Hearts drew 0-0 with Aberdeen.
Shamal George - Unused sub again as Carlisle lost 3-0.
Allan - Unused sub as Apollon drew 1-1 away at Olympiakos (not the Greek side)
Ryan Kent - Didn't make the match day squad as Freiburg earned a great 0-0 draw with Dortmund despite going down to 10 men early on.
Jordan Williams - Played the full 90 in a 3-0 loss to Blackburn.

Awoniyi and Chirivella are currently playing for their teams.

Wolfsburg lost to Stuttgart 1-0 yesterday and Origi had a poor game with just 1 shot in 90 minutes.

Kent has been subbed on at HT for Freiberg and they had conceded 3 goals by then. 45 minutes of him to watch.

Pedro Chirivella has been getting some difficult loans, both of his Dutch clubs are/were relegation candidates. Willem II is currently 2nd bottom in the league but in fairness they have played a lot of the better teams and this weekend they are playing PSV who are currently top of the league so the punishment is likely to continue. Perhaps the idea is to toughen him up while still playing in a reasonably technical league?

Sounds a mental game that - is Sessegnon still playing fullback?

Great for Ojo as well, does anyone know when his contract is up with us? He's got a real spark about him and I'd like to see him get one more chance with us but I worry that time is running out for him  :-\

Great news about Ojo, hopefully he can really kick on for the rest of the season and be an option next summer. No reason he cant be.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Very happy for Ojo to grab those goals. Hopefully keeps banging them in at Championship level this season.

That Sessegnon does look fantastic though from what I've seen of him, not a chance he ends up playing left back his whole career. He'll probably get some serious goals for a lad of his age/position when he makes the step up to the prem, probably next season. Come and do it for the reds, mate  ;D

4 goals and 2 assists in 991 league minutes so far, meaning he either scores or assists a goal every 165 minutes.

I read somewhere about Freiburg signing Rebic, which could lead to even less minutes for Kent, might be better off finding another loan...

Disappointing Kent hasn’t kicked on after his great pre-season.  Just goes to show finding the right club for these young players isn’t all that easy.
