well I'd say you need to look a bit further than the singles chart ... music today is as good as it was back then ... and just like nowadays our singles chart then was full of the most comprehensively rubbish music you're ever likely to hear ... I say that as someone who loves music from both the 80s and now ... the artists who are making the music that people will look back on are striving away on the fringes not getting a great deal of recognition .... lets not forget that Shakin' Stevens and Dollar were hugely successful back then :)

It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

Boys boys boys - Sabrina Salerno
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88_-dAP4Unk
Having mentioned this, the Setanta Football Show on Friday featured Sabrina's Boys, Boys, Boys.

[By coincidence I suppose, unless they use Party Fears Two next week.]

Sadly it was only to accompany the football highlights, but I think James Richardson had a wistful look in his eye.

If we're talking chart classics: Black - Wonderful Life, beautful, haunting song.
Still have that one in my head to this day to be honest. Associate that song with one of the best summers of my life so far, and spectacular it was. Certainly beats all the depressing bad religion/nirvana crap I tuned into a few years later.

What a great thread. Loads of great shouts already. Here are some I haven't noticed mentioned:

There's No Stopping Us - Ollie & Jerry
Don't Call Me Baby - Voice of the Beehive
King of Rock n Roll - Prefab Sprout
Handle With Care - Travelling Willburys
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
The Riddle - Nick Kershaw
End of the World - R.E.M.
Hands to Heaven - Breathe
Head Over Heels - Tears For Fears
Listen Like Thieves - INXS
Love Changes Everything - Climie Fisher
Lean on Me - Red Box
This is the One - Stone Roses

I can't usually stand pop music, but the 80's had some great pop music.

Classsic. First viewing of that on a pub video thought what a weird band and song. Then after a couple of listens you realise what a band they were. Swoon was a 5 star album.
Thanks for posting that, just had a good listen.
