CPS Announce Hillsborough Charging Decisions
« on: June 22, 2017, 07:53:09 pm »
Couldn't see a thread on this, felt it warranted a post on the main board where more eyes will see it. This could be another momentous day in the fight for justice. Fingers crossed that is the case.

Please heed the following:

There will be a proper editorial statement, but when charges are announced, we do not want any more that the names and the charges on RAWK. We will not do anything to prejudice a fair trial. As the highest profile Liverpool fan site, the defence teams will be reading RAWK and looking for ammunition to claim an unfair trial. We will not give it to them. We have waited over 28 years, we can wait a little longer until after they have had their day in court.

We appreciate that just about everyone behaved during the inquests and don't like closing down discussion on the most important issue for the club, but the end result justifies it.

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/cps-announce-hillsborough-charging-decisions-13223460#ICID=sharebar_facebook

The Crown Prosecution Service will announce whether any individuals or organisations face criminal charges over the Hillsborough disaster and its aftermath next week.

The decisions, set to be announced on Wednesday, come after evidence files in relation to 23 suspects were referred to the CPS back in January.

Family members of the 96 Reds fans who died in the tragedy will be told at a specially-arranged meeting in Warrington before the information is later released publicly.

Two criminal probes into the 1989 disaster were launched in 2012 and ran alongside the recent inquests - which found the 96 were unlawfully killed and that Liverpool fans were not to blame for the tragedy.

Of the investigations, Operation Resolve focused on planning and preparation ahead of the FA Cup semi-final, while the Independent Police Complaints Commission looked at allegations of a police cover up following the tragedy.

The two investigations saw staff conduct hundreds of interviews and examine hundreds of thousands of documents in a process lasting more than four years.

In January it was announced files on 23 suspects had been sent to the CPS.

Who could face criminal charges?

Fifteen related to Operation Resolve’s investigation - from which the potential offences could include gross negligence manslaughter, perverting the course of justice, misconduct in public office and offences under the Safety of Sports Ground Act 1975 and Health and Safety at Work legislation.

A further eight individuals were put forward in relation to the IPCC’s probe into both South Yorkshire Police and West Midlands Police and the alleged cover-up of the disaster.

The potential offences for consideration include perverting the course of justice, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office.

January’s announcement did not reveal the names of any individuals or organisations that were facing further scrutiny.

A spokesman confirmed Sue Hemming, CPS Head of Special Crime and Counter-Terrorism Division, would inform the families at a private meeting in Warrington on Wednesday morning.

He said: “Today (22 June), relevant parties including families and suspects have been informed that the CPS will be announcing its charging decisions in respect of those individuals and organisations referred by the IPCC and Operation Resolve on Wednesday, June 28.”

No, it shouldn't. But it also shouldn't have taken 28 years to get this far. Just a little wary. Hopefully unnecessarily.

Apologies if this is a daft question, but couldn't quite make it out in the article, but on Wednesday will it be a case of "Yes charges will be brought" or "no they won't" or will individuals (in the case of a yes) be getting arrested?

Or am I jumping the gun?

According to someone who knows about such things: They don t normally name people being charged...just age and gender and alleged offence.  Might be a bit different for this.

Thanks - was wondering if it would just be a bland statement that they are going to bring charges, but not actually charge anyone yet, and disappear for another few months. Personally I'm hoping it's dawn raids, handcuffs etc.

Just for clarification- it is CPS results for SYP only next week.
The investigation into WMP is not yet complete.

She's one of the family members and presumably has more of an inside line regarding the matter. So any charges will be for the South Yorkshire Police and the West Midlands ones will come later.

BBC version:

A decision on whether individuals and organisations will face criminal charges over the Hillsborough disaster will be announced next week.
The Crown Prosecution Service said it would reveal its decisions on 28 June.

Relatives of the 96 football fans who were fatally injured in the 1989 stadium disaster will be informed at a meeting at about 11:00 BST.
Jurors at the new inquests into the tragedy in Sheffield concluded the fans had been unlawfully killed.

In January, files of evidence relating to 23 suspects were referred to the CPS to decide whether charges should be brought.

Of these, 15 relate to the Operation Resolve investigation into the causes of the disaster at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989.

The other eight relate to an Independent Police Complaints Commission probe into the conduct of both South Yorkshire Police and West Midlands Police in the days and weeks that followed the tragedy.

Relatives of the 96 have been invited to a private meeting in Warrington, where they will be informed of the decisions by Sue Hemming, head of the special crime and counter-terrorism division at the CPS.

The thing I`m not understanding here is why only eight people being investigated for the cover up/perverting the course of justice?

It feels like from SYP to WMP to the witches government there where potentially hundreds of individuals involved in this from large roles to small roles yet why only eight?

I appreciate you will never have the evidence or the resources to provide the required evidence on all guilty parties but eight suspects seems low to me or have I got this wrong?

More than 8 people were investigated but only 8 files were sent to the CPS  by the IPCC.   David Conn did a piece quoting the head of the IPCC saying they were going after the "controlling minds" in what was a hierarchical organisation.

Fair to say this means a lot of middle ranked police  will not face prosecution.   Also fair to say a lot of people are very unhappy with this.   Given the open nature of this forum I won't say more, other than there is a feeling than many involved in the cover up will clearly remain free from prosecution.

#Hillsborough charging decisions to be announced 2moro am.  Further comment about anyone charged may prejudice trials and get you in trouble

It's going to be so tempting, on here, on Twitter, on Facebook or whatever else, to comment on the names we may or may not hear tomorrow (though apparently there will be names). But let's just bite our tongues. Let's not give them the literal get-out-of-jail card they'll be looking for.
“Above all, I would like to be remembered as a man who was selfless, who strove and worried so that others could share the glory, and who built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say 'We're Liverpool'.” - Bill Shankly

I think that point RHI made about Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. is a VERY important point.  Our Mods here can track comments on RAWK, but anyone reading this blog should also keep vigilant to NOT post anything on other social media lest the same prejudice get spotted.  Also, if anything is noticed on other social media, we can "encourage" that those postings be brought down.
