Maybe next season the anti-bedwetter brigade can shut the fuck up when people posit the theory after we drop points that City could well win a staggering number of games in a row, seeing as they've done it twice in two seasons.

Players couldn't have tried any harder, gonna be a summer of trying to fix minute issues in the make-up of the team. The room for error is so small against Guardiola's City, we'll have to be almost perfect as opposed to almost almost perfect.

Won 18 of the last 19 games and 14 straight. Fair do's to City.

97 points and only 1 defeat is still a great season.

seriously stop saying that. nothing fair at all.

As much as it pains me to say it - congratulations to City.

I said all along if we got 97 and they got 98 then fair play.

Tuesday night, for me has made this a hundred times easier to take. Weve got a European cup final to win and that would take the sting out of this hugely.

We’ve waited 29 years, what’s one more? In the meantime let’s make it 6 European Cups

Disappointed to say the least - but

Like others I am more concerned with the amount of points we get because there is little we can do about other team's tallies. Although we finished 4th 60 points is not satisfactory for this club and was, I believe, ultimately the reason it was decided Gerard had taken the club as far as he could.

I've theorised on another thread about whether having a fit Baros might have meant another 10 points. We would still have finished 4th with 70 but I think that would have been seen as a marginally more acceptable season and I think Gerard would have been given his final year.

So 70-75 points is my standard for next season. Hopefully that will achieve the following objectives anyway.

1) Stay ahead of Newcastle (and obliterate the ignominy of pacing ourselves against Charlton & Aston Villa.
2) Challenge the Mancs and possibly overtake them.
3) Move onto the shoulders of Arsenal & Chelsea ready for a challenge the season after next.

As regards the cup competitions again the round you go out in often depends on how soon you meet a team at your level. I would hope though that if we are knocked out of a competition it is not by the likes of Portsmouth (who were duly thrashed in the next round by Arsenal). (I was going to mention Bolton in that line but it has to be acknowledged that they punched above their weight in the League Cup last season. Our problem was we punched below.)

And having typed the above I am reminded of what must be our first immediate objective. We must avoid doing a Newcastle and make sure that we qualify for the Champions League proper. We will be seeded but we must hit the floor running.

I don't look at the points gap - which is largely out of our hands - but our own points total. For instance, if the question last year was to narrow the gap to Arsenal, the previous season's Champions, then we achieved that - but only because Arsenal dropped more points than we did!

59-60 points is not good enough for this club - it cost 1 manager his job and would have placed another under increasing pressure had it not been his first season in a new league spent pulling off a minor miracle in his speciality field. :wave

Our minimum target needs to be closer to 70-75 points - realistically this will not be enough to win the league but should be enough to secure at least a Champions League Place (assuming the Mancs don't finish outside the top 4 and win - it would be ironic if we were the ones to suffer from the "clarification" of the rules! ::) )

I have faith though - at the weekend I put £5 each way at 13/2 on Liverpool to win the League not counting Chelsea (in practice finish 2nd or 3rd) - I understand the odds are now 9/1 but never mind...

PS - I don't know if somebody has mentioned this already but out record last season against the clubs we have played this season (substitute Crystal Palace for Sunderland) is P6 W1 D1 L4 F4 A9 (4 points with a -5 goal difference) Edit - HH has - VERY well! - http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=81017.0

My aim remains the same as it was at the beginning of the season - minimum of 70 points, preferably over 75.

That way it takes a really good season to catch us and, while it looks like Chelsea at least will pass that I doubt another 3 teams can.

But I have every sympathy for Carra's sentiments as contained in my signature below...

We'll be back when we can show that we can stay there.

The 2001 UEFA Cup run was noticeable for the attitude of "We're Barcelona/Roma, They're Liverpool" ie we were a faded giant. We overcame this attitude to win (in fact the closest we came to coming a cropper was against the team that had no superiority complex over us!). The accompanying Domestic Cups and subsequent strong Premiership Season helped strengthen our re-found standing but the 2nd half footballing lesson we picked up from Barca the following season (close as we came to winning it in the 1st half) and premature exit from the competition to Bayer Leverkusen signalled the beginning of a slump that culminated in the UEFA Cup exit and scramble for 4th place that cost Gérard Houllier his job.

The parallels to our current position are striking - we were the underdogs in the majority of the season's CL matches last season but managed to confound the "Liverpool are past it" prophets of doom. We are having a strong league campaign (eventually) but received an arguably misleading tonking from a team with something to prove from last season.

The difference is we are doing it at a higher level - as "European Champions" not UEFA Cup Winners! We seem to be more resolute and our attitude to the tonking we did receive was that "it was a blip that we will resolve" rather than "we were finally caught out by a superior team".

The warning signs are there though - being European Champions means little to the status of Porto now! We must not be complacent and must maintain the progress we have made (especially against Benfica). We have to push on and make sure we are getting at least 75-80 points per season for the forseeable future.

We're standing at the door - we just have to make sure we're still there when it opens... :scarf

It is very impressive indeed and there's another one hidden.

Gérard Houllier ultimately lost his job because we finished 30 points behind Arsenal. Now a start was made last year and it is partially due to Arsenal's own collapse but our turnover of points against Arsenal this one single season promises to be 40!

The underlying message of this thread, though, is to ignore how far we are behind any other teams but to concentrate instead on the improvement we have made - at least 21 points, maybe 24. At the start of the season I made the same target as I make every season - we should expect at least 70 points and anything above 75 is a good season. Well, this has been a very good season! :wellin :scarf

A good point well made!

Serious hat on now, after my 2 less than serious replies above. I always judge a season by the number of points we make and by which team we go out to in the Cup Competitions (not going out being an unqualified bonus of course! ;) ).

For the League I look for a minimum of 70 points but it's not a good season unless we are getting 75-85. I think we have the team to push into the high 80's - it's out of our hands then what other teams get.

My standards are the same every season -

Minimum 70 points, preferably at least 75.
Qualification for the Knockout Stages of the CL (especially given we'll be one of the top seeds)
If we have to go out of the Knockout Competitions then it should be going down to a top side fighting and not a minnow with a whimper.

Be very careful about aiming for top 4 though, the CL Qualification changes next season with the top 3 qualifying automatically and the 4th side entering a very tricky qualifier from a top 15 country.

My target first and foremost is 75 points. Where we go from there is a bonus.

To quote Gordon Strachan, we are probably the weakest link...

More specifically this year I have been worried about the precedent set by Spurs last year - not because of Swares Soarrez Suares Luis but because having so many new players in can disrupt the unity of the team, especially with "big boots to fill". However, MattD's stirring post above puts my mind at ease - hey, let's go for 76... :champ

I just want to say how proud I am of this team! Yes, Man City may have moved the goalposts (and you will have your own theories as to how/why this is) but this team has scored more than any Liverpool in history and, to refer to one of the locked posts that I cannot quote, we have moved from the Fiesta through the Mondeo and the Mercedes - we are now a Rolls Royce!

Are you new to RAWK? ;D

We'll need to reach the same levels again next season to be in with a chance. We can do it, but the margin for error is painfully small.

What a fantastic  season, what an amazing run!
So proud of thr club, players, and supporters.
Incrediblyunlucky to not win a title, its not every day that a team only drops 3 points in their last 19 games.
On the other hand,  inspite of only dropping 3 points from their last 57, City only won by one point.

I think we'll look back at this season and see it as thr foundation for future league success, just as hopefully we'll look back at last season's Final loss as the springboard for winning it this year.

Several things could catch up with them - ageing players, FFP, or Guardiola leaving (he usually gets bored after 3 seasons or when he realises he can't do any better).

We just need to focus on our own team and keep improving - something we've done relentlessly since Klopp arrived.

We will twat them next season. They are still relying as their old as fuck players. One more season, their arses will drop off.
I don't think we'll necessarily 'twat' them, but I absolutely do think we can squeeze a few more per cent out of our performance, heck maybe even break 100 points - and I do agree that it's incredibly unlikely that all of Aguero, Silva and Kompany can replicate their performances this season, and even with City's money that's a very, very difficult trio to seamlessly replace in one summer. Will that stop City being incredibly good? No, very doubtful, but it could cost them a few per cent over the course of the season. That would be enough to swing it from them to us.

I must admit, I would also be quite happy for us to go out of both domestic cups early again. Absolutely no point in us fielding first team line-ups in those competitions unless our reserves can get us into the final.

Anyway, fuck it. It's been a magnificent chase and the only thing that really pisses me off is how costly the despicable Kompany non-red and Keita non-penalty decisions were. Hopefully VAR will help next season.

As for us, we're fucking brilliant. What a time to be a red.

11.7 mm from the title, what a season!

I feel that if we want to win it next year, we have to beat City in the direct games.

14 fucking wins in a fucking row.

They're completely irrelevant in Europe getting twatted by anyone that's not shite but in the best league in the world they just go on to win fucking 14 in a row like it's fucking nothing. So fucking illogical and completely insane.

Tells you more about the way domestic opponents viewed City versus those abroad.
Only bedwetters this season were the other teams in the league thst quit before they even played their games against City.

Fishing?

If you're serious, then if you're a Liverpool fan you don't give up! Sounds like you couldn't wait to rush in here and mock people for actually believing.
