Internet Dating (Careful now)
« on: January 5, 2013, 04:50:12 pm »
Well I remember a thread on here that recently shot to like 100 pages in a week and was promptly locked due to inappropriate stuff. I think I saw some fella posting pics of some women he quickly met up with etc.

Anyways, I thought maybe some of us could have a 'sensible' discussion about this and general words of wisdom and light pisstaking if this doesn't get locked by some mods today?

Please don't post any pictures of people or name names.

Anywho I'm finding it difficult on the free sites. I've had two dates so far, one was a complete mismatch and the other was really good, but she went dark after about two weeks.

This was over a year ago and I've decided to have another go and I still see the same old profiles and pictures so I guess I'm not the only one finding it hard.

Anyone done the pay sites? I'm thinking of giving eharmony or match.com a go. Since they're so expensive I thought I'd get some advice on whether they're worth it or not; I'd happily pay if I had more chance of meeting someone.

So premium dating sites - yay or nay?

I met my current GF on Match Affinity. Have been with her for 3 years so far. In fact, this is the longest relationship I ever had.

Several of my friends have met long-lasting partners online, Guardian Soulmates seems a popular one. One friend is getting married in a few months to a girl he met.
Rafa Benitez: "I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager. Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone."

It's a load of shite personally speaking.  That's probably because I had a mare on the odd occasions I used these sites.

My mate met his missus on match.com getting married to her this year too.

How long where you on those sites before you met them? Did you go through a few dates then met the right girl or was it just the first date and both got lucky ?

I've found the biggest problem is a profile. I did quite a serious but detailed/funny-ish profile and had it reviewed by some middle aged women from other forums who gave me advice until it was somewhat decent.

The main thing was getting decent pictures. I'm not a looker and every family pic I look goofy or like something out of house of the dead. So I took some photos myself and cropped them and as soon as I put them up I got 3 messages from women saying 'cute boy' 'you look like that guy from Skins (Nicholas Hoult turns out) I don't...' and some general messages.

Still, I don't feel these messages are going anywhere. Most of the girls on POF seem to be on it all day. I'm talking with about 3-4 birds that I'd go on a date with, but these free sites feel more like chat rooms than dating sites which is why I'm looking to go into the paid ones.

Perhaps paid sites attract more serious women?

Which site then?

My sister in-law had a few different fellas before she settled down with the one she's with, not sure what site.

Sorry but my personal view is you've got to be a bit sad if you can't get a bird around where you live, either that or an ugly c*by ;)

I need to give it another shot, I am horrible at creating profiles though. Maybe that's a testament to why I'm unsuccessful on there. I spend 30 minutes making it look decent enough, think I'm finished, "Now complete our 500 question survey to find that "special someone"". By the time I get to certain sections I just don't care

You want to get Mouth, then have a fit but slightly fat bird(think Adele) walk the streets at night and follow her quietly. Pretty soon you'll find a fella trying to load a couch into his van. He's having a lot of difficulty so he'll ask the bird for some help.

You've found him then.

I went to two weddings of match.com couples this year.

I also know several people that have had terrible experiences with online dating (usually with the free sites).

My best bits of advice, based on these two different situations:

-Stick to the more reputable pay sites if you can afford it

-Find out as much as you can about those you interact with/meet from sources outside of the dating website (a simple Google image search in one of the scenarios gone wrong would have revealed mug shots)

-Don't move too quickly into a serious relationship.  It may not be often the case, but there are plenty of people who use these services for cynical purposes, or use them because they have things to hide.
