Henderson is only 21, hes got plenty of time to grow and get better as a player, would be different if he was 27/28 and was performing bad then I could see why people complain.
I think he should be played more in the middle, when watching him he looks like he wants to keep the ball and keep possesion simple passing, and he puts in a good shift plenty of running. He also looks like one of the fastest players in the team when he at top speed, would be good to see him bursting from midfield to help support the strikers a bit like Gerrard, but still has plenty of time to learn this.
The only bad thing I have to say about him at times is that he needs to be more rough in tackles and hassle more players on the ball, maybe the reason he isnt played in centre midfield as much.
But still a good player for the future and played well today, should also take our corners looks a decent crosser too.

i felt that he played well today, was involved in alot of our good play and came inside well, if he had Johnson at right back behind him instead of Kelly todY( Who i think was poor) then we may have profited from his good performance. Those giving him stick are full of shit. He had a good game today  and there are at least 4(carra, kelly, downing, kuyt) that were worse that him.

At his age i think hes developing well, started of struggling in a big club with expectations but seems to be taking to it well and starting to bring the game that we bought him for to the table. if he continues on the same path id expect him to be a very valuable player to us over the next 5 years.

If Henderson had more confidence in his ability he would be a cracking player.

Has everything in his locker.
Exactly. If he had the swagger and confidence Shelvey has we would be seeing a lot more from. We can see he had the ability he just needs to believe it more himself.

I feel sorry for him in a way as his game isn't built on being eye catching but generally fitting in with the team. Again today, I though he was sound but in the absence of anything resembling a standout moment, he'll unfortunately get criticsm, not helped by his transfer fee. People need to remember he's 21 and has some improving to do but the potential is there, we just need to be patient.

At 21 he is not the player who can grab the game by the scruff of the game and make an impact. Maybe he will grow into that, maybe he won't. But right now he would be an excellent part of a strong functioning midfield. But we don't have that, and he is being exposed, and isn't helping himself by trying to hide sometimes.
I have always said he is going to be a player who when he retires - probably in his late 30s having been a model professional - will get universal priase from actual footie fans and be dismissed as shit by the Sky generation. He will never be a highlights player, but he will be a player that managers, good managers, will be queueing up to sign anytime he is available.

He played much better today. It's easy to forget that he's still only 21 years old.

Granted, he's had an inconsistent season, but he's definitely shown signs that he can go on to be a quality player for us.

Thought he had a really good game today. Won the ball back in so many promising positions and was involved in nearly every positive passing move we had from what I remember. And I think he's performed to a good standard all season despite having to play for a much bigger club, out of position, with a lot of criticism coming his way. Big things to come from this lad.

He definitely needs to be a bit more assertive but I don't think he actively hides, it just seems like that sometimes because he plays the game differently to say, someone like Adam or Spearing. He'll improve upon his confidence as he gets older and I've siad before there are similarities with Lucas in that respect and in what you say about him not being a MoTD player. Patience is need from us as fans to help ensure he hopefully follows the same path as opposed being sold to Stoke for Ł4m.

I think that Henderson has the potential to be a top midfielder.   But my issue is does he actually deserve to start week in week out in the first team.  I believe at this time (all be it he had a decent game today, but lets face it he had an absolute shocker in the Cup final last week) that the answer is quite definately No.  If he didnt have to justify his price tag (not his fault) then i dont think we would see him anywhere near the first team yet.  In his defense, he is being played out of position and i dont get why we do this.  Also I really would prefer to see him play in the middle instead of Charlie Adam.

Played very well today, but people will see what they want to see and spin it how they want to spin  it.
When discussing Dirk Kuyt's work rate :

I don't think he works as hard as some people claim. No harder, for example, than Stewart Downing.

I think you're spot on with your comparision to Lucas. However, one thing I have felt all season is that he's simply playing too much leaving him open to all that criticism he's getting. I agree that he's a good prospect and I think, once he finds his confidence (much like Lucas did), he'll be a very good player. The issue I have with that, is that he's not treated like such a player. He's playing almost every week no matter how he has performed the week before. All that while players like Kuyt, Maxi or Bellamy (understandably because of his fitness) were getting splinters in their arses. Playing him for the sake of it, won't help him. And so far, he hasn't shown enough consistency to be starting every week...

I do agree that in an ideal world we'd play an alternative player as he isn't consistent at present. He does have the odd poor game like the cup final last week and it'd be great if someone more experienced could replace him. But we do need to remember his age and you could pick virtually any 21 year old in his position and they'd likely be in the same position. In fact, they could play anywhere and it'd be the same. I do think he should be protected a bit more in terms of games, if nothing else, it'd lessen some of the unfair criticism he gets.

Stoa, just seen your post and I guess this would be the response. Definitely agree about him playing a bit too much and we should leave him out of the starting eleven a bit more often.

I like him far more than any other Dalglish addition to the squad.

I think that Bellamy is obviously the best signing of the season, but in the long run, Henderson's going to be the best addition of Kenny's reign. Hopefully Coates will end up giving him a run for that title, too. I look at Hendo and I see a player that I'm sure SAF and Wenger were playing the "he's not ready so let's leave him at Sunderland for another year before we go in for him" game with. And they might have been right that he's not ready for a big club...but when he comes into his own, we're the ones who'll have him. Worst case scenario, as far as I'm concerned, he winds up somewhere on a level between Danny Murphy and Yossi Benayoun (mildly arbitrary picks, mind you). Best case scenario, we'll look back on this season as the last year of reshuffling and development before the Henderson Era™. I'll personally be happy with an "87.5% of Gerrard" final valuation. 87.4% would mean utter failure, of course.

He is a nice easy target as a new signing who has been playing regularly.

to be honest I think he has had more good games than bad so far - although maybe not many great performances but a few shocking.

I've a feeling he will follow a similar path as Lucas where he'll have a few supporters during his early seasons then eventually everyone will come to realise just now good he is.

Tidy player with a great workrate, but offers very little in the last third of the pitch.  Next season he shouldn't be playing wide right or the furthest forward of a midfield 3 - just stick him in the middle and play to his strengths.
Sit down, shock is better taken with bent knees.

I have always had doubts about Henderson and wasn't enthused when we signed him.

But in saying that, he plays just like Lucas did when he first came to us. Massively missing conviction in his passing.

Always been impressed with Henderson when he's played in the middle, don't like him out wide at all but then that isn't his position. In the middle I think he does a good job of keeping things ticking over possibly without being glamorous or doing anything particularly obvious that would make people notice.

Definitely agree that he needs to be more confident, but at 21 and having just had a move to a big club for a large fee think that he is just feeling pressure that he should in time grow out of and I think that once he does he will become a really good player. So many times you see him get into positions where you're screaming at him to just fucking shoot and then he seems to suddenly think of all of the things that could go wrong, pussy out, and turn back on himself.

Henderson seems to be a 5/10 at most things but doesn't specialize in any particular area - i.e. blistering pace, set piece taker, long range passing, physical strength etc etc.

He's still young so can improve but maybe shouldn't be playing every week.
