I don't like those chip shops that give you your chips in a tray, unless you're having peas, gravy or curry with them of course. If you are just having chips or pie and chips or fish and chips etc etc then it should just be in paper, no tray.

Trays are just an excuse to get stingy with the portions

Is it true southern softies never have gravy on their chips? And this came up on a FB page I'm on.... Lad goes to chippy for standard fat Friday dinner for everyone, comes back and he hasn't got S&V on anyone's chips, in fact he just didn't forget he actually said no when the woman in the chippy asked him. The debate was whether unless told not to wouldn't you automatically say yes to S&V on people's chips? Got to be a yes for me.

Talking of pickled onions,Aldi used to do gherkins but sliced.Think they were called gherkin/dill spears and they were in a sweet vinegar.Best things I've ever had.Gherkins are boss but because these were sliced they'd absorb the juices and it was like eating a bag of juice.im slobbering now just thinking of em.They also did them in a sweet chilli vinegar which were also boss

Gravy is only worth having when it is made from roasted meat. Oxo/Bisto/Brasso all taste the same.

When I 1st met my Mrs we were down South where she's from and we wanted a chippy. After being accustomed to the great chippies we have up here I expected the same down there, especially when she said this one was the best for miles. We went in and ordered and I ordered a sausage dinner. Well what I got will live with me for the rest of my life. Chips like cardboard, watery gravy that you could barely refer to as gravy, hard peas and a couple of sausages. I was disgusted. Took one mouthful and threw the rest away. They were used to that and thought it was the best around. I almost fucked her off

For years there was a HARRY RAMSDENS at the Metrocentre / Gateshead and I was in there quite a few times.

It closed a few years ago, I dunno why because it was popular, always a lot of people in there.

The fish was tremendous (I used to eat the flesh of dead animals and fish then)

So, as a direct result of this thread I went the chippy last night on the way home to get the above.

Fucking local chippy doesn't even do gravy. Admittedly it's an Indian/chippy, but regardless, honestly, I was heartbroken. Ended up with curry sauce, which isn't a bad alternative I grant you (although it's not a patch on the Chinese chippy curry sauce you get in Liverpool), but the issue was the inability to have cheese with it. And it not being gravy, frankly.

End result was me consuming an angry chippy whilst watching us get turned over by a pretty poor Leicester outfit, minus cheese and gravy

I wouldn't get vinegar myself, but I reckon I'd automatically assume it's a yes and probably just leave it to dealers choice as to how much.

Don’t do decent Indian food either.
However I have got used to their slant on fish and chips. It’s not the same but you do get used to it. So much so that when I was back in blighty for fathers funeral the fish and chips I had were a bit of a let down. All that waiting, thinking about the taste and afterwards just felt as fat as a house. However the Indian I had, perfect 👌
