It deep keep the domestic league strong but robbed players of playing at top clubs earlier on.

Most of the socialist countries were doing it. But to be honest, the players were well paid, they got apartments or houses, and well paid jobs if they didn't go abroad at the later stages of their career. Many of the top players became coaches, club officials or even successful businessmen, because of the status they enjoyed in the society ...

Say what you will about these communist and socialist regimes in Eastern Europe (and they truly were oppressive and for the most part horrible to live in) but they really did care about sport. The whole sound body sound mind thing.

Look at how sport and in particular football as a whole has decayed there in the times since. Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania were all fantastic in their day but generally nowhere to be seen since those days. They've been reduced to good players here and there and qualifying for the odd tournament but it's really gone downhill.

Vladimir Jugović was one of my favourite 90's player (second only to Martins). Really underappreciated nowadays, but an exceptional passer and all-around footballer.

Yugoslavia was always different in that regard [sport aside] compared to other countries with same regimes [although it had fault of their own] but the vast majority of people lived a prosperous life in one way or another in Yugoslavia. [at least in my experience]

I have to show my birth nation some love with Dzeko's inclusion. he really is an underrated footballer, and he's done a great job in his latter years.

They might have gone downhill a bit on football, but they are still great at other sports, especially basketball. The NBA MVP most probably will be a Serb.

Yeah, you're right. Yugoslavians could travel abroad and life was certainly a lot better there than it was in other places. It was seen as something to aspire to.

No Oblak or Handanovic?

Forgot about Slovenia  ;D.

Was trying to find an alternative to Subasic in goal but he was probably a better choice than Begovic forgot that Slovenia had two of the best goalies in the world.

I think even now clubs in former Yugoslavia are pumping out world class players.

I don't want to derail this thread with comments unrelated to football, as we all know how quickly that can go downhill when talking about Yugoslavia, but it really was a fascinating country. Not perfect, of course, but there's plenty that modern-day, supposedly "free" capitalist democracies could learn from it.

I seem to remember my earliest memory of a big European game was early 70s against Red Star?  My dad had told me how crazy their fans were and how we'd meet a very hostile atmosphere at their ground.

TV wasn't in HD then and it could well have been in black and white too but all I can remember was the noise and the smoke.  You couldn't hear the commentary and it might have been around that time someone coined the phrase "if you're wondering which team Liverpool are, they're the ones with the ball".

It was probably the first time I'd been allowed to stay up and watch a game too.

Always have good memories of Yugoslavian and other Eastern Bloc teams round that time.

After playing Red Star, the coaching staff had a complete rethink of how to play in Europe.  LFC did a video about the matches against Red Star a few years ago as they are considered philosophically/tactically to be among the most influential in the club's history.

I remember people saying Shanks had to learn how to play to win in Europe as opposed to in England, maybe it was after this game but not sure.

I would say playing Red Star and Ajax in that early 70's period changed our "philosophy" to how we go about doing things in Europe.
