I totally agree DJ, for the life of me I have never understood why there is a grace period when there is a change to travel restrictions. If a decision is made to restrict travel to and from a particular nation then, as you say, giving someone 4 days to get back kind of defeats the object of imposing said restrictions.  If they have to pay £1000s to stay in hotel for quarantine beachase they chose to go to Portugal in the middle of a pandemic then so what, more fool them for going.

I am still of the opinion that we should have imposed a blanket travel ban 15 months ago, aside from essential goods and services. Yes I get it may have resulted in people being stranded  and others being separated from their loved ones but it would have prevented 10s of thousands of deaths to people in this country and if that had inconvenienced people then I'm sorry but that's just tough luck!

Had my first Friday piss-up after work yesterday for eighteen months, even though I hadn't been to work. We were all a bit concerned so we chose the Tattersall Castle, which is a boat moored up on the embankment. The time is long gone for that. It would be a token gesture with little benefit now.

The time to act was when we had the data and knew that 7% of those getting off a plane from Indian were carrying the virus. That was weeks ago. You have to be able to react to new data in this situation and react quickly. We reacted by restricting flights, but delaying those restrictions coming into force for days. That was the error.

Crap. I had no idea that it was anything like that high. No wonder the UK COVID figures are going down the toilet (they are, considering the high rates of vaccination there).

I need to get to the UK for family reasons, and the sooner the better (and before it is too late). But it is complicated - my wife and I are waiting for our second shots - we'll be done mid-July. So, I suppose we can travel (relatively) safely by the end of July. But that's only part of it of course - we can still potentially negatively affect (infect) others. We would still need to isolate for 10 days - and I suppose restrictions could be worse again by that stage because of Johnson's gross mishandling of the situation (Delta variant). Johnson's actions might be the very definition of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I read something somewhere that suggested if we are too strict or locked down for too much now we risk pushing the inevitable 3rd wave into the winter, and I’m guessing the theory may extend to if it happens in the winter it will be worse and then follow on into spring next year and require further restrictions.

However, knowing these clowns we’ll have a wave now and then another one in the winter anyway.

I mean, there has been a life threatening pandemic, which has spread extensively through EU incl the football community, which delayed a massive tournament for over a year, and then, in front of one of the first huge crowds in that year, right at the start of the tournament (and a huge event in it's own right - Denmark's first home tournament game, Finlands first European Champ game) one of the worlds best players had a sudden medical condition play out in front of the world. But more seriously, we’ll have a third wave (we’re likely already in it). So it goes back to March 2020, it becomes the best route to flatten the wave rather than postpone it. A month will give us more population immunity and help flatten it, a 3 month delay would give us even more population immunity but push the peak into a time that it would be perfect for transmission. Delaying June 21st might not actually save significantly more lives than not delaying. What it does is allow the health care system to cope with it - a prolonged (smaller) peak rather than a sharp one now or a prolonged one from end of July rather than a sharp one from September. The quotes of 6 weeks to prevent restrictions being in place until spring are from politicians like Steve Baker who still fail to understand the dynamics of this virus and whose sole intention is to open up and let rip. The rest of the article apart from his interpretation outlines quite clearly the reasoning behind it. Stop listening to Steve Baker above others, and stop reading the telegraph would be my advice.

Back to your question though, a lot of things make the comparison unequal. The UK really is on top for testing it’s population more than most other countries, and certainly way above the US. The question isn’t really how many infections we have (and comparing it to the US), but more the trend. Ours are increasing, while testing remains fairly constant. That’s the problem we have and that’s why the alarm bells are ringing. To be honest though, the UK is actually in a position to sound these alarms very early and to be brutally honest the US isn’t. Now our alarms may turn out to be false of course, but an early alarm is better than none.

The other factor, and it’s the main one is that we are dealing a variant that is 90% dominant here that is more transmissible. The US has the same variant at a proportion of 5-10% - basically us 6 weeks ago. Will the US follow us and it becomes the dominant variant? Guaranteed. Will it have the same effect on infections? That’s unknown, maybe there is something in UK social interaction or our vaccine roll out that gives it a leg up here but not there. Jury is still very much out on that - but many people think we just got it seeded here earlier due to our links with India. And therefore everywhere will follow our pattern eventually. Will it though - I’m not sure.

They have found this week that athletes who are genetically vulnerable to motor neurone disease increase their risk due to high intensity exercise, its affect Italian footballers and rugby players like Rob Burrow and Dodie Weir and we've seen heart issues before with Muamba and Foe

You get one thing very wrong here. The likes of Steve Baker don’t fail to understand, he completely understands what’s going on, it just doesn’t fit in with his hard right view of the world so he ignores it or just lies.
