Ha.  The Libertines influential ?

Agree, it's all about who gets the most hype today, there are better bands out there, but unless you play the game, you don't get the exposure.

pisses me off the way people just dismiss him as a talentless junkie. listen to his music, not just read the headlines before you form such a strong opinion on him. then fair enough if you think hes shite.

ahh whatever, its all opinion at the end of the day init. im looking forward to the gig tomorrow anyway

Course you are Carl.  Sometimes best to keep it to yourself though.  Plenty of people interested in seeing Doherty play, plenty of people loved the Libertines as a band, they deserve to be able to discuss gigs, tickets, records on here just as fans of other bands do; ie without a stonethrowing mob of tabloid informed greenhouse dwellers descending on the thread and turning it into one big argument. The same big argument.

Truthfully the people who 'hate' him on this thread. If he was just your average lead singer, you know maybe done some drugs, partied a bit. Nothing too heavy, same as Alex Turner or whatever. What would you think of him?

I somehow doubt you'd say talentless fuck. Probably something along of the lines of 'He's ok, not great but better than a lot of the stuff out their.'

Equally though, if you came across someone like him in the street you wouldn't think too highly of him.

If he gave me a free cd and it was The Libertines - Up The Bracket album I'd think fucking hell that scruffy looking kid's band is boss. I genuinely do think I would. I don't like Pete Doherty as a person or think he's cool in anyway shape or form. I just like The Libertines music. As I've said before, that's all their is too it.

To be fair the amount of junkies on the street that have been members of headlining bands and sold millions of records is fairly slim ;)

He's not just a junkie, that's the point, he's a brilliant musician as well, it's very sad that he's a user but don't let that blur your judgement of his music.

I'd still hate him, just like I hate Alex Turner. Flash in the pan nobodies who will be forgotten by history. I don't give two sugary shits about his drug abuse. If he wants to kill himself, be my guest. The problem is he IS just your average lead singer. But people overrate him, which causes me to instinctively take up the opposite stance in an attempt to balance it out.

(As for Alex Turner being forgotten by history? Yeah there is fuck all historic about writing the fastest-selling debut album in British music history ::))

Never heard of him...so just looking at wikipedia at the moment...seeing the words "poet" and "artist" have set the alarm bells ringing...sounds like a cock...never heard of any of his bands...so off to youtube now to have a wee look....now that was just fucking horrible. I won't call him talentless as I don't know enough about him to say that. I will say that the fact that he has taken drugs is of no consequence to me at all...it's his life he can do as he pleases...but I will say that the little music I heard puts him in the radiohead, pj harvey category of music that I fucking detest.

Why do you hate him? He's hardly a nobody, made some great music on his own and with other projects. Maybe not great to be remembered in years to come, but that's no reason to hate somebody.

I broke my clavicle around the same time he released his solo record. No lie, it sounded brilliant whilst under the influence of pain killers.

It's a decent record at best now that I'm somewhat sober, but nowhere near his Libs/Babyshambles efforts, where he had some good minds like Carl Barat and Drew McConnell around him. He can be hit or miss, I suppose. But his early stuff is still one of my favorite music ever.

I can understand not liking any music he's produced or associated with, everyone has different tastes but why such a vitriolic attitude towards him?

He's hardly an angel so asking why people don't like him is just going around roundabouts. Obvious why people don't like him (absolute tosser) and obvious why people do (his music).

We all can move on.

How are the fuck do any of you know what Doherty is like? You honestly think the press' perception of him is a true and honest one?

So I guess he's still alive then!

Docherty is a very intelligent chap, but he's totally fucked up so I am genuinely surprise he is still alive.

I think it's a bit odd that he's hasn't gone to gaol for drug driving though, George michael did time for far less.

He's a junkie, he's a shite guitarist, but so was Kurt Cobain and I'd still rather listen to Doherty than him. I'd actually take Doherty over the Beatles, too.

It's a lousy life for the washed up wife, and her permanently plastered, pissed up bastard
.

Whatever, I love it.

He was accused of stealing that line if I remember correctly.

Think I may be in the minority of people who just think he is alright, nothing more nothing less.  Used to be a big fan but his recent stuff is not to my taste.  His songwriting went off the rails after he left The Libertines, one or two decent enough songs but nothing to touch the two Libertines albums.

He needs a bloody good wash though.

Ha yeah i remember seeing that (not at the time).
I thought it was pretty nasty the way the press followed him around waiting for him to fuck up. He obviously has a self destructive personality but i don't think he would have got in half as much trouble had he not been egged on in the press.
A mate of mine was on a poetry course with him and, whilst he's by no means a fan of his music, he said he was a really nice, funny bloke.

It is a shame but he's hardly the first musician to be a smackhead, he's just blatent about it.
The reason most people hate him is because the tabloid papers told them he's a smack head.

I'm not sure to be honest i think the real reason a lot of people haven't taken to him is down to the overhyped press claims of "genius", "spokesman for a generation" nonsense.

I haven't heard much of his stuff but what i have heard hasn't struck me as particularly ground breaking however neither do i have a particular hatred for the guy, his drug problems are par for the course, show me a musician and i'll show you a drug addict (in one form or another). What does him for me is that he's now been recording for the best part of 10 years, in a similar timescale The Beatles had gone from Please, Please Me through Rubber Soul/Revolver/Pepper and even their eventual breakup leaving an indelible stamp on music in the process similarly Dylan had been at the forefront of the folk/civil rights movement and released Highway 61/Blonde On Blonde and retreated back to the country to basically kick off the early seventies singer/songwriter movement again leaving an indelible stamp on music, Doherty on the other hand has released one acclaimed album with The Libertines and spent the best part of the rest of his career with a needle in his arm.

Not quiet true. Any picture of him tells you he is a smackhead. Funny thing is, it's true.
Sid vicious was a smackhead and also a bit of a murderer too. People dont seem to refer back to him as junkie c*nt at every opertunity.
I'm not his greatest fan or anything but i do like a lot of the songs he's written and have heard from various people who have met or dealt with him that he's sound.
