If England had a better Number 7 they would of won. Gayle made some bad bad decisions at important times.

England played well though. Defence all tournament very good but tonight was the night they could of won. I thought Australia would win by 20.

Tough game in the heat and both teams really defended well.

Unless the standard of Super League improves back to the Mid 00's level we will ALWAYS be bridesmaids to the Aussies. Only once in a blue moon we would win.

We have never been able to beat them (apart from the odd game) for as long as I've watched RL. Even when we had players like Hanley, Edwards, Offiah etc.

Top effort from England and a little unlucky to lose. Just those wrong options and excitement at key moments that proved costly. Both teams gave everything and credit to Australia too.

England vs New Zealand 3 Test Autumn Series announced.

All 3 live on the BBC.

Its disappointing they are not playing a Test in London.

Yeah I'd have put the first match at Olympic Stadium to be honest. Great to see Anfield back. We got 40k for the 4 Nations final between the Aussies and Kiwis last year.

Great effort....but

Didn't make enough yards in the first half, continually making 30 or so yards compared to 50 plus and starting each set under the posts.
Non existent centre play from bateman. Bizarre selection. shenton or Percival would have been far better options
poor kicking game from Gale
Unlucky with the ankle tap
Lack of overall pace
Should have took the 2 points on offer twice in the first half
Monumental effort from Roby, Graham and Burgess
Massive improvement on recent years and could have won.

Enjoyable tournament and encouraged for the future.

There is another option. Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple.

I don't understand why they were going left so often. Bateman isn't a centre and they should been going right to get the ball in Watkins hands.

I assume Bateman played as his very good in defence even though he isn't really a centre.

England on home soil, they should get out of the group easily.

New Zealand and Australia have got a bye but Group D is tasty with Tonga and Papua New Guinea.

Breaking news - both NZ and Australia have pulled out of the tournament. Too much covid risk, too long quarantine and covid protocols, too long away from the families etc, looks like it has to be in doubt now. Both NZ and Oz had requested it be delayed until  2022, but this request was rejected.  https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league/125837881/rugby-league-world-cup-kiwis-officially-withdraw-alongside-kangaroos-citing-player-welfare-and-safety-concerns

Mind you, only recognise about 8’names in the England squad these days.

The names in the Italy squad are pretty hilarious. Are they basically Italy C?

Looking forward to see-who comes 2nd to the Aussies.

Got tickets for the Wales -Tonga game at Saints.

Agree that the England squad is decidedly average. Walmsley was a massive loss.

Australia are actually ranked 2nd in the world these days after NZ. I think they will win it but there are teams who will provide them a game. 8 of the Samoa squad played in the Australian NRL grand final last week.

Looking forward to it, while you can laugh at some of the squad make ups, by the time the serious stuff gets going you will have seen that Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, PPNG are decent teams as well as England, NZ and France (nearly all their squad played Super league this year) and that watching emerging nations like Jamaica and the Cook Islands could be fun.

There were some one sided games last time around but some absolute classic games. It will be entertaining for the neutrals, I would recommend it.

Got quite a few tickets for this - opening game at SJP, few round Wigan, Bolton. A Friday-Saturday at Leeds and Sheffield, then the final. Looking forward to it, mostly with my Huddersfield Giants-supporting mate. Hoping the trains aren't too bad so we can have a few drinks around the North.
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.

Oh, I know about the rankings, just that i expect the aussies to find a way to beat the other top sides.

The Ireland group could be very interesting and entertaining.

I see as well that Wane has reverted to type and brought in 3 Wiganers for the warm up game against Fiji.

It used to be Australia, NZ, England plus one other making up the Semis. Is the consensus that England aren’t that strong this time around and could some/all of those Pacific sides be a threat (to England, not to winning the thing)?

The NZ and Australian squads are frighteningly good when compared to all the others, including England.

The Australian backs are incredible. At fullback they are spoilt for choice, including the freak of nature who is Latrell Mitchell, James Tedesco (fullback in the Dally M team of the year 2022), and Valentine Holmes (top points-scorer 2022). So that's without Tom Trbojecvic (player of the year in 2021), Nicho Hynes (player of the year 2022), and Dylan Edwards - who's an outstanding full back and MOTM in the Grand Final (and voted 4th in the best player of the year 2022).  Any of those would walk into any Superleague side.

That's before you even mention Nathan Cleary.

Some of the Fijian players are amazing.  Kikai, Koriosau, and Sivo are the ones who jump out.

That was an incredible match, great atmosphere as well. I think they had a decision go against them that was fairly harsh as well which, if given, might have seen them in the final. I expect Samoa to be hard opposition, I'd say England may find themselves struggle against Samoa in that first game and France will be no pushover either given their experience and that theyn mostly play together as well

Just watched it back. England were 20-0 up after 72 minutes, shipped 3 tries in 5 minutes and with the last play Tonga were adjudged to have knocked on when possibly the ball was stripped out of the tackle and then they actually dotted it down.

Sorry, didn’t spot you’d posted the same link!

Amazed Paasi isn't in the Tonga squad. They must have some brilliant props because Pasi has been superb this season (and with the Tonga coach as his club coach)

The usual media disinterest is predictable.

More focus on the women's rugby union World Cup.

Look at the BBC Sport front page today. A whole section on the women's RU WC with several articles, plus 4 more general RU articles dotted about. On the same entire front page, just two RL-related articles, both positioned low down.

And that's the BBC who are showing all RLWC games live. You'd think they'd at least try to drum up interest.
