Folks,

are there any Social Media Marketers in here? I'm particularly interested in running competitions in facebook.
I've done facebook marketing before, but not competitions. Im an SEO Specialist by trade.

So, I'm looking at running a few competitions and so would be delighted to hear from people that know a lot about them.
* Best practices
* Best apps
* Can i simple host a competition on an external site, and embed it within an iframe on the new timeline page (apps section)?
* Can facebook shares be tracked if done in the above manner?

You post a picture of your product and add all the relevant tags and URL link to the product. Sit back and watch the 'likes' come flooding in.  All good so far

Hundreds and hundreds of 'likes' but not one referral to the website from insta, not one.  These people just like fucking 'like' any picture put in front of them.  Its so deceiving trying to get a handle on how good your product is.  If they liked it wouldn't they want to go to the website and see how much it costs FFS?

I swear to god if you just posted a plain black picture it would get loads of likes.

Pay influencers instead of instagram, that works better.

Make sure the influencer is related to your product, and if the product is targeted to a specific area, then ensure their followers are from there, I know thats obvious but just making sure.

I’m selling women’s fashion to 18-30 range.

The influencers are everywhere. Usually girls who look like glamour models going under the guise of ‘blogger’

They have 30-100k followers of which 80% are blokes.

A really gorgeous influencer quoted me £100 for one post. Plus the cost of the item which I obviously have to send.

It’s a minefield.

Well targeted adwords (not broad terms) should have more return than social media marketing. That’s more for brand awareness rather than pushing people to your site, especially the likes of Instagram.

Yes, I'm beginning to realise IG is a crock of shite when it comes to driving traffic to my site

Think I will try a few adwords campaigns mate.  How did you find your adwords campaigns ( i assume you have done them)

My advertising budget really isn't massive so I'm going to have to try and come up with some well chosen niche keywords.

Been reading lots about adwords and many are warning small startups away from Adwords.  What do you guys think?

'Influencers' are the biggest bubble of the internet. I have no doubt the biggies do a good turn, but most of these 'influencers' just whack their hottest pictures on dating websites and link up. In addition, half of their 'audience' will be bots that they've paid for anyhow.

 Depending on the product, you'd probably be better paying someone to review it on Youtube.

Go back a couple of years, aye, yeah, but folks cotton on quick. You'd be better throwing it into Facebook Advertising in my opinion - at least you have a degree of control and can actually use their analytics.

Throwing a oner to someone in the hope that a few snaps will help flog your product is snake oil by drip.

I’ve always found that adwords drives more high quality traffic (and sales) for less money than any other source.

I will caveat this with the fact I’ve always made sure my adword campaigns are extremely well targeted to very specific keywords. This means that my ads get seen less per day, but my CTR was extremely high and my sales from these were also pretty high.

I messed around with some broad phrases to test them out and was really disappointed. Seen by loads, clicked by plenty (not as high CTR as specific phrases) and the sales from these were a lot lower than the specific terms.

I used Moz (can get a free trial) to figure out the best keyword phrases, and I made sure my adwords campaign was well set up in various groups, etc. so I could target these to specific landing pages optimised for that phrase.

Agree with FB advertising being something to look at too. I’d do Adwords and that over Instragram / influencer marketing anyday.

I'm going to create a few google adwords ads for individual products within my range.  This obviously allows me to narrow down to specific key words

What sort of max CPC do you guys work on? I appreciate it all depends on your advertising budget but I think I'm going to start low with a  £0.20 max CPC.  This still estimates to get me over 1K clicks.  Here's google ads guess for running an ad over 1 month for one of my products using 6 keyword phrases and Max CPC of £0.20

Experiences rather than products generate more productive outcomes rather than products. We have seen that when certain ‘influencers’ have posted experiences and events images in stores rather than any specific product or promotion.
