Interesting, I agree with the general message. Not sure about Steve Waugh as coach and the whole 'back where we belong' tone is typical of Jones, but he is right to question why we have these cricketing minds all twiddling thumbs and talking shit rather than being involved in the game.

Devvoed! :( Fucking 2nd place!
But well in Nick! :wellin

Thanks Jon. It seems that I managed to pip you at the post! Really chuffed to be honest, it made the series even more fun (if that could be possible when thrashing the Aussies) .

Well done to England on a really professional job from all areas. A special well done to Cookie, I have liked him from his first test when he was dragged from the 'A' tour, flew god knows how long on a flight and sent out to  bat straight away. He scored a 100. I new he was class then and he has proved he is class this tour. Well done again, Cookie.

Thanks to everyone on here as well, it's been the best thread on RAWK for a while and has helped me forget how things aren't working quite so well at our beloved club. Light is at the end of that tunnel, I hope.

Finally, a couple of songs to sum up the Ashes series :-

'He bowls to the left, he bowls to the right, Mitchell Johnson, his bowling is shite!'

Punter's gone....
No direction
He's got no idea

That could have been written after the even by a Barmy Army member as a pisstake! Remarkably consistent in being wrong:

Jimmy scarred by his previous tour
5 of the 6 batsmen scarred – well they all filled their boots to a degree, especially those who suffered most last time
A lot of mentions of Mitchell Johnson being good
Mockery of England’s planning and meticulousness as if it was a bad thing
No depth? Ask Tremlett and Bresnan about that!
Belittling Pakistan who if I’m not mistaken skittled the Aussies for 80 odd in the same summer
Calling us chokers – well Perth aside we held our never well and even the way we bounced back from that on day one at Melbourne was impressive (although glad we didn’t bat first!)

All in all, very entertaining!

They really don’t like KP much do they?! I read Aggers (I think) say that for all his peculiarities and arrogance he is a good team player, trains hard and doesn’t rock the boat (unless made captain?!). They definitely seemed like a great bunch of lads with a really good spirit.

What did he say?

Athers asked Strauss how long he was planning on sticking around for and if he'd make another Ashes tour. Strauss quipped that he may be on the other side of the mic which Athers responded by saying that they need their jobs. Swann then bounced in an said something along the lines of, 'Nasser is surely for the chop soon no?' :D He then gave a cheeky glance to the camera.

I'm looking for a vid, but unsuccessful so far.

MBEs for all!

If they can retain the ashes in the aussie's backyard, this could go down as an England team of legend.

Too bad that won't happen.

Well done England.  Thoroughly well deserved.

I thought this series would be tough and actually believed that England would retain the Ashes but only through a draw.  My theory was that neither side appeared like they could take 20 wickets often enough to force a victory.  I was half right.

England's bowling seriously surprised me.  I fully expected Swann to be a nightmare to deal with but he never really had to perform as the job was mostly over by the time it came to him.  Anderson was one I never saw coming.  I always had him down as a swing friendly bowler who could not adapt to different conditions - previous history probably backed that up.  It was interesting to see Yorky's post where he mentioned that they tried to change Anderson's action and now that he has returned to his old style he can swing it all day long - although we rarely lasted long enough to test this theory. Perhaps my memory of him was when they were tinkering with his action.

There isn't a part of the game where were England didn't outplay us.  This was almost as comprehensive as the 5-0 a few years ago, even if the scoreline doesn't match up.

Strangely enough, I am more optimistic about Australia's fortunes now than I was say 12 months ago.  Back then, it was clear the selectors were sticking to their conservative selection strategy to win the next match and the next series.  They weren't ballsy enough to make selections for tours 12 months away and beyond.  Now that the smoke and mirrors have been removed for all to see, we can rebuild properly.  No-one is saying the next Bradman or McGrath is around the corner (and as soon as someone utters those words they should be shot as it is the surest way to kill a career) but Shield cricket is still strong, despite what Chappell says to keep himself in the limelight.  The difference now is that promising players will be selected, instead of old timers protected because they are the incumbent.  We may not be dominant like we were, but we will be up there in the discussion at least.

But enough of that for now and congratulations again.

At least I can now watch Liverpool self destruct without having to stay up all night.

watching the highlights again now, you can hear the barmy armys trumpeter playing the last post as Tremlett is running up to bowl Beer and end the series.

i miss richie too. a bit random but does anyone remember an amazing call from him in 2003? martin bicknell was bowling to a young saffer, think it was either rudolph or dipenaar...anyway he bowled a few outswingers in a row and richie called that he might be setting him up for the inswinger. the very next ball, sure enough he did just that and either bowled him or had him lbw shouldering arms. brilliant!

I have stayed up every night to watch this. I mean this genuinely. There's not been one night of the Ashes where I went to sleep before 3AM. This affected my school work, my sleeping pattern etc. Actually there was one night where I slipped off guard and fell asleep at 10... Basically FML.

This is crap. Next sport worth getting interested in is the Masters in April.
How I've enjoyed the Ashes series, really helped a bloody miserable December fly past..  and this thread is the only bit of RAWK I bother with. Football can go dump on itself as far as I'm concerned.

And thanks to all the excellent, witty, knowledgeable and sporting contributors, Aussies and English (or daft Welsh/Irish) alike.

Now I'm off to boring bloody bed. >:(
