Hope they keep the Titanic Plum Porter

Alex from Finland on here loves that. It's our regular pub and drink when he comes over here.

^ peak town, in my opinion,  late 80s :D

There was one with a washing machine, the roscoe or roscoe head? there were 2 right?
It would take weeks to go through all the boozers in town back then

I brought a few mates over from here (Netherlands) for Sound City one year and brought them in here for a Plum Porter. Got them to read the Trip Advisor reviews just as Dave came over for a friendly chat with us.

Some pubs change their names several times down the years, and I don't know what it was called in the 1980s, but it certainly started life in Victorian/Edwardian times as The Grapes. and was probably that until recent times.

And oh yes..... The lesser spotted Dave in his natural environment!  :wave

I've been told it was The Grapes in the 90s. And that there was a mad barman prior to Dave, who might have been called Kevin and been the son of the landlord. (I might be misremembering that though).

What I do know is that the Titanic Plum Porter was excellent.

I wish Dave well, kept great beer in a very characterful pub.

Happy to report, the quality of the ale hasn’t dipped. There was a very tasty Northern Monk on cask last night, as well as the usual Titanics and a couple of others. The NM was really lovely.

Great photo, and my source is very reliable on where she was getting slaughtered in Liverpool in the 90s.
And in Dave's defence when she first came back up her about 6 years ago she was watching the footie on her own drinking pints in the Dispensary, no problems at all.

And great to her the beer is still good.

The changes in those two photies that stand out immediately are.

The council parking zone sign.
The student blocks at the back.
A burgalar alarm.

Glad to hear the ales is still good . It will be . The young Landord who left before Dave and his Missus got there went straight to the Fly in the Loaf so I guess they company knows what they are doing .

When the pub was changing hands me and me mate asked him if he had any glasses he didn't want. He went upstairs then came back down with a box of continental pint glasses for us.

Him and his missus have got the Bridewell now.  They're proper sound (even if they are both blues).

He's a great fella.  I haven't lived in Liverpool for over 4 years but The Fly was my "local".  Obviously the beer was excellent but he was also a big part of why I loved going in for a pint.

I thought the Bridewell had shut down? (If that's the one between Hanover St. / Liverpool One Bus station..?)

It turned into a cocktail bar a few years ago.  That shut earlier this year and it's back to being a pub.

Went to the Dispensary after the Man City match and it was great.  Had the standard Titanic Plum Porter, which was immaculate.

They still do this in The Bridewell, especially when it's quieter. They often say to sit down and they'll find you to bring over your pints. Often ask if you want a re-fill when they're collecting glasses too.

Back on the topic of The Dispensary, I heard it is still owned by Cain's (even though they obviously don't brew any more) and Dave was the tenant. Dockleaf is also on the Cain's brewery site, so I guess there is a connection there. I was apprehensive myself when the people from Dockleaf took over The Dispensary, but they seem to have had the sense to keep what was good while making a few small improvements. You can pay on card now, but I haven't tried asking for tasters. Haha.

Service since the new people took over is shockingly slow. Two people serving on a Saturday night, at least Dave would have him plus Pauline and two others on.

Those new peeps serve me straight away. The probably don't like the look of you Jon, that and your head not reaching above the height of the bar - they probably can't see you.

Maybe try standing on a stool with a christmas-lights party hat on next time you want to be served..?
