The Brasserie at The Mal in Prince's Dock is decent. They have a locally-sourced selection and a reasonable choice of fish etc, but we both had a steak-frites; they pride themselves on their steaks, supplied by Donald Russell from Aberdeenshire. The frites were hand-cut and we had a simple green salad on the side, but I always think you can tell a lot about a restaurant when you ask them to do something basic and unfussy. I can't recall the wine we drank (something Spanish and red, but the exact bottle escapes me). Service was excellent; friendly and efficient, but unobtrusive. They could tell it was a special occasion so they left us pretty much alone until we wanted them.
All in all, recommended: naturally, any restaurant at which the Sommelier compliments me on the beauty of my companion, is going to get a good review (even if that amounted to stating the bleedin' obvious...) and while it was starting to fill up when we left with a lot of (very) overdressed women (wannabe WAG types) out for a big night, it's also the kind of venue you can have a relaxed, intimate meal with good food and wine. Total bill was around £60-70 I'd guess? Very reasonable.
