The media loves to go along with the popular option. I don't think that's really something that's up for debate. There's crap pundits in every field, whether it be current affairs, sport, art etc., who seem to just promote the popular option time after time. Damage limitation if you will.

The main reason, IMO, you so many pundits seemingly "favouring" Manchester United is simply because their continued success is a liklier option than anything else at this moment in time. The ridiculous lengths they go to are often for the purpose of retaining that all-important "controversy factor".

Then of course there are some journalists and pudits who stick out from the mass. They don't use the same tired old cliches, reheated for the thousandth time, often just talk a bit of sense, and appear a person who might just be stating their honest opinion without attempting to stir the shit in order to fund paper sales.

But is it just me being paranoid, or are there a lot less decent, straight-talking pundits in the sport of football than there are in other sports (rugby, for example, has many good media contributors)? The amount of hacks around just seems unbelievable. You often have to wade through a mountain of monotonous shit just to find one gem.

Like I said, do I have a point here or my bias toward Liverpool clouding my vision? For example in rugby, the team I support is not really a major for, and thus is not written about much. So much of the articles I read, I'm fairly neutral on.

Thoughts?

No one has replied to this yet, so I will.

I don't claim to be any sort of expert on football but I'm 30 now and I've been a fan all my life, so I like to think I know a bit about the game on a deeper level than simply regurgitating whatever the current Sky Sports line is; I can, for example, understand the Level 3 thread. :) Because of that, it's easy to spot when a pundit is speaking sense (it does happen sometimes) or spouting utter shite (happens more frequently).

With other sports, I would happily concede that I don't know as much about them as I (think I) do about football, so it's correspondingly harder for me to identify when (for example) a given rugby or American Football pundit is talking nonsense, although I can happily say that Brian Moore is the most biased co-commentator I have ever heard and Mark May is a clueless idiot.

Far too bad ones to mention but I will throw in one who is always balanced, articulate and just basically honest and respectful - Graham Taylor.

Five Live has the best commentators by a mile. Waddle speaks a lot of sense on there aswell, although he's spoilt his reputation somewhat by becoming a commentator on Setanta.

I'm not from England so I don't really hear the opinions of these so called 'experts' but took an interest in reading this forum and found the name Garth Crooks to be quite funny. I don't really know what it is but it sounds like a typical 'baddie' character in some kids film.

When you say "kids film", I assume you mean a cinemascopic moving pictures production, based on a idiosynchratic notion of an innoccent age gone by, of an idealistic world, designed purely for the entertainment of perhaps those, who, by reason of being born somewhat later than the rest of us, may be, by some way, in at least a chronological sense younger than us, by that I mean you and I, and when you say "baddie" do you, in fact, infer the character who, although highly prominent in this production, may not, at all times, have the best intentions towards the main protagonist, vis a vis, the "hero" of the piece? But to return to your point, I think 4-4-2 Gary

I refuse to vote because Onion Bags Smyth isn't an option. Neither, as someone stated, is 'Release the Kraken'. As the folks in Amerikerr can always be counted on to fuck shit up to immense levels, you could spend one CL tie listening to this lot and find yourself offering to lick rusty razors blades just to have Keyes and Andy Gray back. I promise you.

It wouldn't be that annoying if the thread title did not specifically state ON EARTH, not just in the UK. Heck ON EARTH should at least include those muppets on RTE, Dunph the Dunce for starters.

Voted for Alan Brazil as well, only cos I didn;t see Garth on the list  :butt.  Brazil is useless, inarticulate, unfunny, doesn't keep upto date on current footballing issues, xenophobic and alcoholic!!

Garth tries too hard to sound different and intelligent but ends up excrutiatingly unbearable.

Presenters shouldn't have an opinion and commentator 'analysts' and pundits should have at least three years managerial experience imo. No offence Mr. Hansen.

Spot-on.

When Gray trots out his shite, Keys should challenge him but he doesn't.

And Alan Green doesn't let the expert get a word in edgeways, dominating the proceedings.

Didn't see Charlie Nicholas on the list, he's a c*nt. But could find 3 bigger c*nts.

I dont know what their names are but there are 2 in particular. One who always commentates on the spanish games on sky and one on ITV in Champions League Matches.

They both go incredibly OTT on their comments about how great a pass, goal, run or the player himself is. Awful!

The ITV fella is Clive Tyldsley

If the mancs are playing then its 90 minutes of verbal wankery.

But if you really want to a good laugh, listen to him commentate when England are playing. The 4 nil win over croatia was cringeworthy, England can decimate the best teams in the world when they feel like it, well acording to Clive anyway ::)

Don't know how many are aware of him, but Patrick Kinghorn. What a mega, mega c*nt that guy is. Us fans in Asia have to put up with his bile every week.

That guy hasn't a clue about football, and purely HATES Rafa. Just saying that it would typical of Benitez to win against Madrid and United, but not win anything this season, that Liverpool deserved so much better, that Rafa wanted a big, fat contract, and called Rafa's call for a 'long term project' as bullshit, as Rafa clearly wanted just the money, and how Rafa was bloating about beating a pub team in Real Madrid.

God, if there's one person I'd like to kick the hell out of, it would be him. I want to hang him from the fan, slap his twattish face, and then just let him go circles in his retarted world. Then just kill him.

Voted for Martin Tyler and his monkey because of their love of Man Utd and belief that football began in 1992. Also voted for Craig Burley because 1. I can't stand commentators who constantly root for the underdog and 2. I hate the phrase 'Get in amongst them'.

Surprised at the omission of Ruud Gullit from this list. Would have voted for him purely because he starts every sentence with 'In my time at Barcelona...'

Tyldsley used to make no bones about being about being a MUFC fan when he had his column in The Telegraph.  Knowing that, I must say I think he gives Liverpool a fair crack of the whip when he commentates on us, sometimes referring back to his Radio City days.

His problem is that he's ITV's main commentator and has to plug every scrap of ITV sports output as though it were the World Cup Final.  Every five minutes he has to trail something else that is "unmissable" - e.g. highlights of Bury v Leyton Orient on Sunday morning, or an obscure boxing match.  He'd be better on the BBC, where at least the remorseless plugging is done between programmes, rather than by the presenters themselves.

Le Tissier, Sherwood and Redknapp for me.

Le Tissier due to his smug horrible prick attitude and his stupid fat bastard laugh.

Sherwood for his absolutely pathetic approach to anything Liverpool/Rafa.

Redknapp for being Sky's bitch.

I like Merson myself.

Sherwood has to be the worst. Not only does he know nothing but he comes across incredibly smug and arrogant.
So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Martin Tyler's Monkey sometimes speaks sense, but the problem he has is he's never prepared to see two sides of an arguement:

Quote
Liverpool's old theory about if you are in the team and you've got the shirt and you play well you will be in the team next week doesn't work under Benítez. Most people who win 4-0 against Real Madrid would just go in the dressing room, sit their players down and say 'you know what, lads? That was fantastic. You lot are playing on Saturday.'

I guess that's not Rafa Benítez's style so therefore we will wait and see what he comes up with on Saturday. Fernando Torres is getting treatment on his ankle but it would be daft if Rafa tried to wrap him up. For me, it would be an indication that he has given up on the league if Torres doesn't play

Its far too easy to say that. You can't just say 'same again lads' and expect the same level of performance. Other factors come into play, like who we're facing, their strengths and weaknesses, what players we have fully fit and available, the tiredness after Tuesday etc. And Torres may not be fully fit, but I expect Gray to slag Rafa off if he doesn't start tomorrow.

Also the same thing with regards to zonal marking. It's always the system's fault. If a team goes man to man, it's the individual's fault

I can safely say Ruud Gullit has never started a sentence in that way in his life.
I can safely say he has. I also don't like how he takes to criticising managers like Rafa for example when he's failed at managing wherever he's gone.

He never played for Barcelona.

Carlton Palmer, flap eared fool who can't say anything beyond "play your best team" and "doesn't understand the premier league" and "4-4-2".

With an attempted Jamican accent at that.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Too many to list. So i'll just name the ones i don't mind listening to. Dalglish, Giles and errrrrrr.........em...........thats about it.

What really really gets my tits though are the co-commentators, they never shut the fuck up and are simply an unnecessary distraction, forcing their shite opinions dow the viewers throats, when that's not their job. Whereas at least retards like Collymore and tha, their paid for their opinions, no matter how irrelevant they are, they're doing their jobs.

What really pissed me off over the Real Madrid win, was right across the board, it was "why cant they do that every week", turning a fantastic victory into another stick to beat Rafa with. And no one seemed to argue the piss, that we struggle most when teams park the bus, and Madrid didn't or couldn't do that.
